2007-10-09 08:19 Mobile Phones in Africa
Occasionally in my posts I have mentioned the fact that the African continent has embraced mobile phone technology at an amazing rate. A recent BusinessWeek Special Report discusses how mobile phones are "sparking economic hope and growth" in both emerging and non-emerging nations [" Upwardly Mobile in Africa ," by Jack Ewing, 24 September 2007 print edition]. The report begins in Kenya. "Precious little would seem to connect the Kenyan village of Muruguru to the 21st century. The red dirt roads …

2007-10-09 03:30 so-did-i The Story Behind
It was a dark lonely night. Though it was not raining, the sky was overcast and there was a sinister darkness all around. To add to the gloomy mood was the heavy wind, raising the dust, waiting to make me a part of it. For some lost moments in my history, I did not know what happened. When the senses came back with the urgency of a kolkata tram, I uttered " so-did-i " survive that Hold on! that is not the story behind this blog and me. Why this interest to tell about the story behind this blog I …

2007-10-08 01:03 US Congress Knows the Parallels Between 1929 and 2007
I cannot recollect to have seen this congressional testimony by Robert Kuttner (pdf) from October 2 being reported in the MSM. It again confirms my view that shorting the financial sector and the Federal Reserve (not US!) Dollar as well as all US federal debt and using the profits to buy more precious metals is probably the most prudent investment strategy these days. I am most grateful for your other suggestions in comments. Read Kuttner's testimony in full (all emphasis mine): Testimony of Rob …

2007-09-02 07:49 Grameenphone ladies: victims of their own success
Unplanned Obsolescence From Fast Company magazine http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/118/unplanned-obsolescence.html Grameen's famous Village Phone Program lifted thousands out of poverty-- and helped Muhammad Yunus win the Nobel Peace Prize. The problem: It's not working anymore. From: Issue 118 | September 2007 | Page 107 | By: Richard Shaffer A t first, they all came. Not the beggars, of course, but villagers of every other sort, including many of the poorest. Most came in rickshaws, but som …

2007-08-29 03:17 Making Money in SL (ABC News and more)
ABC News covered the SL Entrepreneurship panel I moderated at the SLCC (see VWNews' notes ) in an article titled " Want to Make Money in Second Life It's Harder Than You Think ". Yes, it is hard - it is entrepreneurship. And yes, I do believe that entrepreneurs do not have as much to fear from big business as some think. 1. Risk Averse First, the obvious: large corporations tend to be more risk averse and require more levels of approvals than a small business so, by-and-large, they just will not …

from Rolling Stone How Bush Allowed an Army of For-Profit Contractors to Invade the U.S. Treasury --From Issue 1034 Posted Aug 23, 2007 8:51 AM H ow is it done How do you screw the taxpayer for millions, get away with it and then ride off into the sunset with one middle finger extended, the other wrapped around a chilled martini Ask Earnest O. Robbins -- he knows all about being a successful contractor in Iraq. You start off as a well-connected bureaucrat: in this case, as an Air Force civil eng …

2007-08-24 07:24 Outpatient clinic of innovation
An interesting idea from Ulleval University Hospital in Oslo. (There are some similar concepts that I know of from the US, like MIT´s Center for Biomedical Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center, but this one has its own unique features.) Here´s a summary from Andreas Moan, Director of Research and Education: The Clinic of Innovation is run like any traditional out-patient clinic with one major difference: The purpose of this Clinic is to facilitate the conversion of ideas from research and medi …

2007-08-23 15:31 Advanced Time Management Top 10 Ways to Put More Time into Your Life!
Time management in the corporate environment is frequently touted as the way to control time and put more of it into our lives. Classical time management doesn't work, however, simply because it supports trying to do more and more in a limited amount of time. Instead of managing time, you must transcend it. Part of the total time management experience is being able to do your own thing at your own speed. You must take control of your physical and psychic space instead of allowing the distraction …

2007-08-20 19:11 What to do in college to prepare for entrepreneurship
One of the most popular goals among young people is to have their own company. This doesn't mean people want to necessarily build the next Google or Facebook. For many students this means smaller companies where you can have fun with friends while you think of cool ideas and then enjoy the steep learning curve of implementing those ideas. The most important aspects of a job for young people are flexibility and personal growth. And no job gets you that as effectively as starting your own company. …

The summit, held in Reno, was intended to highlight the Silver State as an ideal location to generate renewable energy for …
