2007-11-05 21:26 Who really killed de Menezes
By David Aaronovitch (THE TIMES, 05/11/07): A couple of years ago I did my second stint of jury service at a Central London court. We ended up hearing a case in which a middle-class couple were terrorised one evening by a man who had decided, wrongly, that they were connected with an earlier argument he d lost with someone else entirely. There was a lot of punching, threatening and door-smashing involved, and the woman was still so scared that she testified from behind a screen so that the accus …

2007-08-31 21:57 Exile at all costs for many young Eritreans
A new AFP feature ( thanks to Sudan Tribune )... Sitting side-saddle on the back of a moto-taxi whizzing through the Ugandan capital, Zelalem breathes in lungfulls of freedom after parting with most of his savings and risking his life to sneak out of his native Eritrea. "I want to be able to make plans and choose my own life," says the 27-year-old. His perilous flight from Eritrea started with a 2,000-dollar (1,500-euro) fee. It was paid to a smuggler who spirited him through the border with Sud …

One of Mark Bent's solar flashlights stuck in a wall to illuminate a classroom in Africa. Source of the photo: http://bogolight.com/images/success6.jpg What Africa most needs, to grow and prosper, is to eject kleptocratic war-lord governments, and to embrace property rights and the free market. But in the meantime, maybe handing out some solar powered flashlights can make some modest improvements in how some people live. The story excerpted below is an example of private, entrepreneur …

2007-08-26 12:12 Ethiopian grooves
We've spent the past four weeks travelling around the UK and Greece visiting family. Most of the travelling has been done on the UK's motorway network - normally a fairly tedious, traffic-clogged experience. But this time it wasn't so bad. Why Because we had this to distract us - Ethiopiques - the Very Best of Ethiopiques: Hypnotic Grooves from the Legendary Series. It is the best bits of the much-admired but daunting 21-CD Ethiopiques series, which, according to Wikipedia, features: Ethiopian a …

2007-08-23 19:07 A Pastor Disappears & Ten Protestants Arrested
This is a news brief from our friends at Compass Direct News. To read the full story click here. But first a reminder. Remember last week VOM got blasted by a misinformed journalist who claimed that Eritrea isn't persecuting Christians. Well, if Eritrea is a free, peace-loving, religiously-neutral place, why are they taking away the Catholic Church's minstry outreaches like schools, orphanages, etc The Catholic church is one of the four officially-approved faiths. And why are Pastors disappearin …

2007-08-22 16:33 France Proposes EU - UN operation in Chad and CAR
The new French Ambassador to the UN has circulated a draft Security Council "statement" affirming the council's readiness to approve an EU-led mission to protect refugee camps in Chad and the Central African Republic. (A "statement" is a non-binding expression of Security Council unity on a particular topic. It is typically of symbolic value, but in this case it will pave the way for a Security Council resolution sanctioning an international military operation in Chad and CAR.) The French draft …

2007-08-21 15:30 Peace in Darfur: Next Steps after Arusha
By Alex de Waal Between August 4 and August 6, 2007, the African Union (AU) and United Nations Special Envoys for the peace process in Darfur, Salim Ahmed Salim and Jan Eliasson, convened a meeting in Arusha, Tanzania, with the aim of corralling Darfur s armed movements into adopting a single negotiating platform. This represented the second stage of their three-stage plan for achieving peace in Darfur, subsequent to the failure of the May 2006 Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA) to obtain an inclusive …

2007-08-19 20:58 Our new enemy: Eritrea
The newspapers here in Africa are covering a dispute between Eritrea and the United States. We are accusing Eritrea of sponsoring Islamic terrorism in Somalia and other nearby countries. Those of us who have lived in Cambridge for a long time will recall Eritrean independence as a cause celebre from the early 1990s. Now they are independent and we apparently hate them. What's the punchline The total GDP of Eritrea is $1.2 billion (source: CIA Factbook ). Our new enemy has an entire economy …

31. 'I didn't do it for you' by Michaela Wrong Another Africa book (and I've got three still to go!) This time detailing Eritrea's betrayal and struggle to keep its own land in the face of Western indifference and Ethiopian opportunism. A very sad story, and although one senses Wrong isn't exactly an impartial observer, she puts a good case for the validity of Eritrean independance and right to self govern. A tribute, if anything, to the persistance of the human spirit. 32. 'The Purple Hibiscus' …

2007-08-14 14:32 US-Eritrean Relations Sour
Here's a piece from the BBC web site. Quote: US moves to shut Eritrean mission The United States has ordered the closure of Eritrea's consulate in California, in a sign of worsening diplomatic relations. US embassy officials in the Eritrean capital, Asmara, say the decision is due to a string of restrictions imposed on its embassy. One would think a super power would be above such petty squabbling.

With headlines such as "Current Crop of Runners Not Up to Task" and "Change Tact[ics] Or Sink", recent articles published by Kenyan journalists have been harshly critical of Kenyan distance running. Among other concerns are that Ethiopian and Eritrean athletes are closing the gap. But are these reports accurate Not according to statistical evidence, which shows that Kenyan running is as dominant as ever if not more so. 2007-08-08 20:09 Ogaden's downward spiral
By Simon Tisdall (THE GUARDIAN, 08/08/07): Rising tensions in the Ogaden region of eastern Ethiopia, combined with chronic instability in neighbouring Somalia, Eritrean enmity, and human rights concerns, are testing US support for the Addis Ababa government led by Clinton-era good governance pin-up Meles Zenawi. The Bush administration welcomed the recent release of 38 opposition politicians detained after violent protests over the conduct of elections in 2005. But it has kept quiet over Ethiopi …

2007-08-05 11:34 A Diocletian Persecution in Devon
In January 2007 I posted a brief comment on the UCCF supported Christian Union in Exeter seeking a Judicial Review over the alleged breach of their human rights when the Student's Union changed sought to change the name of the group from the "Christian Union" to the "Evangelical Christian Union". Earlier today this old post received a comment criticising my complaint. Since the response is likely to be long I thought I'd move this to a main post. I will respond point by point. However, one cavea …

By Reuters' Opheera McDoom ( also here )...
