2007-11-05 06:51 Fidel Castro teste Call of Duty 4
1. Be honest were you getting sick of being asked whether you thought the WW2 FPS was running out of steam Truthfully, of course I was, but I get tiresome to hear gamers say anything is running out of steam because in game develop …

Se ha estrenado el blog de OpenSocial de Google. Se llama : OpenSocial API blog y su primer post comienza tal que así: " The web is better when it's social" Friday, November 2, 2007 at 1:15 AM Posted by Amar Gandhi and Peter Chane, Group Product Managers There's no denying that the web enables communication. The killer apps of the web -- email, instant messaging, blogging -- have enabled us to communicate with our friends, family, and the rest of the world on a large scale. But there is a newer …

2007-10-28 15:58 Intervju med "unstoppable Fred Singer"
Fred Singer är en av de mer kända skeptikerna till FN:s klimatpanel (IPCC). Han har varit Professor of Environmental Sciences, University of Virginia.

2007-10-26 12:48 Pearl exhibition at the Natural History Museum in Paris
We were invited to the Grande Galerie de l'Evolution, part of the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, for the launch of a new champagne (of all things) and made the most of it by taking some photos and going to see the new exhibition about pearls... The Museum's origins date back as far as 1635, but its current - magnificent - incarnation was created in 1994 when the entire building was renovated and all the exhibits reorganised. The main structure is by Eiffel, and the whole thing is extremel …

2007-10-24 13:37 Why Space-Based Solar Power is Not So Good
The Pentagon issued a report indicating that space-based solar power "has the potential to help the United States stave off climate change and avoid future conflicts over oil by harnessing the Sun's power to provide an essentially inexhaustible supply of clean energy." The report, from the Pentagon's National Security Space Office, calls for funding the [...]

2007-10-23 18:11 Mommy Bloggers on Dumbledore
A few of my fellow Chicago Moms Bloggers were quoted in a story on Dumbledore's outing. We'll discuss the ethics of outing later. *wink* Robin Moyher, who writes for the Chicago Mom's Blog, said that her son was not at all upset about the wizard's sexuality. "So what It's a fact of life," Moyher's 9-year-old son said upon hearing the news. Love it! "I think my kids would find it more captivating to discuss a character's magical power than a character being gay," said Devra Renner, author of "Mom …

2007-10-23 17:00 œIts interesting how Verizon s mistakes always seem to work in its favor
We spend a lot of time ripping on Verizon around these parts. And why not They're trying to stack the chips on their side, and we're flailing aimlessly just to get one or two of them back for the consumer. No, they're not Big Brother or anything radical like that. They're just exploiting regulations created before the widespread use of cell phones. We're just trying to keep the stories balanced. And so, courtesy of Ed Foster's Gripe Line, we bring you some Verizon billing issues. Be wary of thes …

2007-10-23 15:32 I m Going To Watch œThe Golden Compass When It s Released
There's a movie coming out in December called " The Golden Compass " starring among others Nicole Kidman. It's apparently based on the first book in a trilogy by a british writer named Philip Pullman. So far I haven't paid much attention to it, other than dismissing it as a Narnia-ripoff by some movie-studio, cynically designed to separate viewers from their money. This was until about ten minutes ago, when I learned that Philip Pullman is a convinced atheist, and that the trilogy of books (call …

2007-10-23 03:09 New Thing #211: Happy Fun Ball
Today's New Thing came from one of my favorite suggesters: My mom. In what I consider an ode to her particular brand of joy and nostalgia, I played jacks. It was hard to find a set that actually had plan, old-timey metal jacks instead of neon or light-up or noise-making, but I finally found an authentic, antique-looking set at a place called Penny Whistle Toys on the Upper West Side (I cold-called and essentially told them that they carry regular, old-fashioned jacks. With a name like that, how …

2007-10-23 02:26 Why an unregulated interchange model is crucial to fostering competition between payment schemes
Statements from regulators indicate that their focus is less on abolishing interchange than on exploring ways to deal with the variations in levels of fees in different markets and for different card products. EU competition commissioner Neelie Kroes recently said that while the commission would not abolish interchange it would continue to assess the legality of current fee levels. The solution usually evoked consists of some form of levelling of fees across the EU, through regulation which woul …

2007-10-22 02:56 The hunt is on
When I was a kid, my elementary school held an annual Kindergarten Round-Up. It was essentially the school's way of hunting out kids who were old enough for kindergarten and get their parents to register them. Now I'm an adult, a parent, and I'm the one trying to round-up schools for my daughter to attend. For those not in Chicago or with school-aged kids in Chicago, let me tell you what the deal is. We have this thing called "school choice" and here are the choices: A) Send child to neighborhoo …

Note: this article appeared in Gendering the Middle East, Deniz Kandiyoti (Editor), Pbulisher: I.B. Tauris, 1996 Feminism(s)1 in the Middle East and their articulations with Islam have attracted substantial interest in recent years. This chapter will focus on the interaction between feminism and Islam in Iran. It will trace, in general terms, the development of feminism in that country and the ways in which it has interacted with Islam at various historical moments since the turn of the century …

2007-10-21 18:20 The Year Of The Failed Threes
2007 was the year of the triples. Three major franchises were squirting out their third installments; Pirates of the Caribbean, Shrek and Spider-man was scheduled for the third time around the flagpole. I've seen all three now, and boy... what a waste of time and money. Of the three, the Shrek-one was the least crappy even though it failed to be as funny and fresh as the previous two. At least it was funny and exciting part-ways through. But the others didn't have that benefit. I was very doubtf …

2007-10-20 23:13 The Iraqi Tar Baby
In retrospect, George Herbert Walker Bush seems like a genius for not deposing Saddam Hussein and occupying Iraq. A review of John Agresto's Mugged By Reality: The Liberation of Iraq and the Failure of Good Intentions. As one of those who thought the invasion of Iraq was a good thing to do for both humanitarian and strategic reasons, the flow of books by those who went there after the invasion or by Iraqis who did their best to put it on the path to democracy all tell essentially the same story …

2007-10-20 17:12 How Will a Supreme Court Decision Affect Housing Prices
A recent Supreme Court decision may have a huge impact on Public School Districts across the country! 2007-10-20 12:49 Tourism & Web 2.0: Improve your Web 1.0 first
Never have I enjoyed a job as much as teaching "Web publishing" at the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences. The more I teach how to write for the (tourism) Web, the more I realize that most tourism websites are really bad. Yes, I confess, this has been more of a surprise that I had expected. I have seen: awful writing, broken links, poor readability, bad navigation and most often no content scope nor real object. I cannot believe the poor status of writing for the web. Good online copy is im …

2007-10-19 20:46 Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon, Second Impressions
* I'm still not blown away by Tracker. No matter how much I wait my searches return nothing, even for files/names I know for a fact exists. The daemon is running and using a lot of CPU, no errors or anything - just bupkus when I do searches. * I enabled the desktop-effects and immediately felt torn about them. The performance is very impressive. I tried Compiz Fusion from third-party repos back in Feisty-days, but I got tired of the horrible performance. Everything went sluggish after a few hour …

Parades, parties, green beer, corned beef & cabbage, leprechauns and ALL THINGS GREEN are essentials for a true Saint Patrick's Day celebration. Everybody loves a good party and Irish-Americans are no exception. 34.7 million strong in number, the US Irish make up 12% of the entire U.S. population. We have nine times as many Irish as the total population of Ireland. Is that crazy With that kind of presence there's no wonder that there's so much hype about St. Patty's Day . Here's a litt …

2007-10-19 19:07 Localism Better than News
I am, I confess, a news junkie. It drives my family nuts. If not for the advent of DVR my kids would probably be parading around the house with picket signs reading "Give us back our mother!" or "NO news is GOOD news!" It's not so much that I love the content of network news - more that I want to know how the media is reporting the issues and how the public appears to be receiving that news. In fact, more often than not, I get a wee bit riled. I find that many networks capitalize on their v …

2007-10-19 17:41 Comcast blocking some Internet traffic
MSNBC is reporting that Comcast blocks some Internet traffic. The article speaks for itself, but essentially reports that Comcast has taken steps to block some peer-to-peer uploads/downloads ... by inserting into the "communication" between the two machines: But with "peer-to-peer" technology, users exchange files with each other, and one person's upload is another's download. That means [...]

While some people do decide to "vanish" for whatever reason, in reading the report and watching the video on Fox Toledo by Shaun Hegarty on the Disappearance of Karen Coldwell, it's easy to see why family members and the authorities were concerned. Karen's family is concerned because of what's left behind at their house. Her daughters found their mother's car, cell phone, medication, even her glasses. The glasses are the most disturbing part because the daughters tell FOX Toledo News that withou …
