2007-11-05 21:26 Who really killed de Menezes
By David Aaronovitch (THE TIMES, 05/11/07): A couple of years ago I did my second stint of jury service at a Central London court. We ended up hearing a case in which a middle-class couple were terrorised one evening by a man who had decided, wrongly, that they were connected with an earlier argument he d lost with someone else entirely. There was a lot of punching, threatening and door-smashing involved, and the woman was still so scared that she testified from behind a screen so that the accus …

2007-09-30 18:53 Happy World Vegetarian Month!
I think this is the first time I've blogged about breakfast! I usually eat homemade granola or Grape Nuts cereal with fresh or dried fruit, and during the winter I love oatmeal, but this summer I couldn't get enough muesli! The infatuation started at my sister's when we visited her in August. I ate her muesli (recipe from La Dolce Vegan! but you really don't need directions) and was hooked. Muesli is just raw oats (whole, not quick), nuts and seeds (I use hemp seeds, raw sunflower seeds, walnuts …

2007-09-20 18:37 2007: Has Anything Changed
I've refrained from discussing anything concerning the Jena 6 case primarily because I wanted to see how (or if) any mainstream media outlets would pick up on what's going on and give some accounts from the students, residents and law enforcement officials. Aside from NPR, most of the MSM outlets have been late to the game in their coverage, perhaps because of the outcry of injustice from members of the blogosphere on their preference to talking about Black celebrity goof-ups, like Michael Vick, …

2007-09-19 09:35 "Fast" Away the Old Year Passes
Furniture Allowance season is upon us once again. This year it coincides with Ramadan which is a mixed blessing. We are shopping till late at night because shops do not open until after a cannon blasts around 6:30 or so to signal Iftar, that is time to break fast and time for the faithful to let the gorging begin. The faithful actually gain a lot weight during Ramadan because they have these Thanksgiving type goat grabs every night for 28 days. True, they abstain from consuming water and food fr …

Is Angelina Jolie pregnant again In this photo taken in Venice, Italy, she shows what it seems to be a baby bump. From the look of the substantial bump under her figure-hugging dress, Angelina could well be pregnant. Jolie and Brad Pitt, 43, have already adopted three children, Cambodian Maddox, Vietnamese Pax, and Ethiopian Zahara, as well as having one biological child, Shiloh and are keen to extend the family. "Brad and I would like to have more kids" she told the Times in an interview to pro …

Ett folkmord pågår och har nu pågått i månader i Ogaden, Etiopien. Omvärlden tittar på utan några reaktioner - som alltid när det handlar om afrikansk människoliv. In an interview with BBC, Fraser conceded that the use of force in Somalia had only aggravated an already atrocious situ …

2007-09-03 15:51 The Racists Among Us
Are Israeli Jews racist The answer is that in far too many cases, yes. They are. And it doesn t seem to matter whether they are religious. Chances are they will have bias against certain ethnicities and/or the skin color. The prejudice that exists is not innocuous. It has a serious negative impact on the economic, social, and educational welfare of entire groups of people. What about prejudice against Charedim by secular Jews. Are Charedim the most despised The answer is... not really. Charedim …

2007-08-31 16:12 The Edge of Humanity
Lucy went on display today at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, and there was no way I could resist paying her a visit. I went in to the exhibit with very mixed feelings about it. A lot of people, including quite a few scientists I respect, have been extremely vocal in their opposition to the exhibit. Richard Leakey called the trip "a form of prostitution" and "a gross exploitation of the ancestors of humanity." Several museums have refused to display the fossil, and the Ethiopian community …
