2007-10-17 22:32 Day 8/10 of Adult Physical Dysfunction Level I Occupational Therapy Fieldwork!
Day 8/10 of Adult Physical Dysfunction Level I Occupational Therapy Fieldwork! I've been hearing some hilarious stuff lately! I had one patient (CVA) tell me she was brought to the hospital just because she was extremely constipated! I had another one tell me that me and my OT supervisor were "twins". I've also been hearing stuff broadcast over the nurse station speaker from the call button - things like "I need to go Number Two Extremely Urgently!" - or "I need help! I need EVERYTHING!" - okay …

Interactive artist Marcus Graf created this dramatic video display window which keeps a watchful eye on passersby. The piece, entitled I, ball used a webcam along with special processing software to detect people as they pass the display window. A series of digitized eyeball movements then follow the those who approach the window. The installation was on display at the recent Exposed @ VillaNuts show in Den Haag, Netherlands. click to view this video clip I think I'm gonna have some weird dreams …

For your reading (and continuing) pleasure. Please do continuations in a separate post -- there can be multiple continuations, each with its own thread. What's in the potion What's Michael Corner up to Where the hell is Harry Part One by shaggirl Summer holiday has always been about nursing wounds for Draco; about recovering his pride and convincing himself that this year will be better. That Potter will notice him. In that respect, this summer isn t so very different. Draco, it s time for your …

2007-10-12 19:58 Apparently my face
makes for a good roadblock. Or at least that's what my pliers thought this morning when they jammed into my eye socket bone, just 1" below my eyeball. Like freaking OW. I look like I have a miniature snake bite... two little holes in my skin. Lovely. Now I'm just waiting for the black eye. I punched myself pretty hard! Who needs enemies when I have myself I just hope I didn't crack a tooth. Possibly too high to crack a tooth, but its all really sore and achy now, so who knows. I'm the poster gir …

R elative difficulty: Medium-Challenging THEME: "Falling Stars" (61A: Wishful things ... or a literal description of 16-, 17-, 32-, 44- and 60-Across) - theme answers are the names of movie stars, the ends of whose names "fall" 90 degrees to the "south" (thus merging with Down answers) This is a very inventive theme, though the assortment of "stars" is pretty rag-tag. REX HARRISON, for instance, stands out like a sore thumb for being the only "star" who is no longer one. But his name is REX, so …

2007-10-11 11:00 How To Become A Better Writer
This article is part of Courtney Tuttle's Group Writing Project. Thanks, Court, for organizing this project! You can have the best ideas in the world, but if your writing quality is poor, no one will recognize the greatness of your ideas. I'm not a born writer. I was a math major in college, so I didn't have to write that many papers. Most of what I know about writing, I learned at my jobs in Information Services. If you couldn't get your ideas across there, you were in trouble. I learned the ha …

2007-10-07 18:20 Are Facebook apps a Long Tail market
Tim O'Reilly has posted a very interesting analysis on the "Long Tail of Facebook applications" (chart from the report shown). He notes that it's very top-heavy, with the top 84 apps of the 5,000 analyzed having 87% of the traffic. People have rightly pointed out that this is just the opposite of Long Tail theory, which would argue for a "fat tail", with the top 100 having, say, only a bit more than half the market. (As an aside, these market share calculations depend entirely on what you call " …

2007-10-06 14:36 How To Change The Color Of Your Car If You Can't Afford It!
So how do you change the color of your car if you cant afford to get it painted If you had asked Bastid & Aaron, they would have given you the proper solution: use 3M Safe Release Tape as it removes cleanly without adhesive transfer, though it's a solution for a short time. And this is what they did when they flew to Albany, NY to drive a car home for a friend of theirs. Click on the images to enlarge. This is the car which they were supposed to drive & bring back home for their friend. And this …

2007-10-05 07:11 In-House Notes
So it looks like our Internet is kinda, sorta back up. Hopefully that will continue. In other news, you might notice that I've added a few tweaks to the site--making it least contemporary to, oh, say, 2001. For the geekily-inclined, I've changed the RSS feed so that it now includes full posts rather than teasers. (I was convinced to do that by this article .*) Also, for those who don't want to deal with RSS or don't know what I'm talking about, you can now get new posts emailed to you. Just pu …

2007-10-04 05:59 And then I poke a goniometer in his eyeball...
I can't sleep. Today was the first day of my increased dose of Wellbutrin, and a side effect is insomnia. I'm now at the normal dose. I went up from my half-dose because I was starting to worry obsessively again! Here is a typical thought pattern while trying to fall asleep: Ok. What if I am on fieldwork next year and I am measuring a patient's neck flexion with my goniometer and someone comes in and startles the patient and I am startled too and I poke the goniometer in his/her eye and the pers …

2007-09-29 18:43 Quick review of the situation
My period has gone away like a good little period, and I am feeling rather more sanguine (sanguine! See what I did there Oh, I just about kill myself) about the state of my innards. Now that I am no longer feeling all subjective and muttering 'hhhhrrrrggggh' to myself at irregular intervals, I have decided to sit down and review this last period as compared to pre-surgery periods (or marathon idiocies, as I think it's only fair to call them). I thought this would be a useful thing to do, as in t …

It s over. Done. Chapter ended, book closed; we re moving on. Tonight, with Niksdad literally helping me to hit the SEND button on the email, we withdrew Nik from school and not for the medical reasons we thought we were going to use. I was on my way to school with Nik this morning after his feeding therapy at Easter Seals; I happened to run into our advocate who was on her way in for a meeting of a special council for children with disabilities. She asked me to join the meeting and I said I cou …

(Cross-posting to PTMYB and to Flickr, because I m a cow that way.) If you watch cartoons the way Lloyd and I watch cartoons, you have probably seen all of the old Tex Avery Droopy cartoons about 5,000 times. Thus you would be familiar with the theme of Droopy attempting to fight a bull/slay a dragon/win a competition to win the heart of a princess/starlet/some other beautiful girl, only to fail, repeatedly. In every cartoon, Droopy sits down, pulls a photograph of his lady love out of his coa …

2007-09-17 01:40 Sandra's Jambalaya
This was a quick meal that I came up while trying to use leftover chicken and smoked sausage. I threw a couple of seasonings together and some rice and VOILA, it came out really good. SANDRA'S MOCK JAMBALAYA 1 lb chicken tenders, cut into bite size chunks (or if you have leftover roast chicken you can use that) 1 lb smoked sausage, sliced 1 small onion, diced 1 1/2 cups of prepared rice (I usually cook mine separately and then add it to the pan). Old bay seasoning to taste salt and pepper to tas …

2007-09-05 19:56 The new Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG Estate
September 5, 2007 If you wish to see the rare sight of a Mercedes executive fighting for control, just refer to the brand's Estate versions as "station wagons" and watch those pupils dilate and the veins pop out on the forehead. Station wagons derived their name from the forerunners to the modern taxi that plied their trade outside rail stations a century ago and are perceived as somewhat down-at-heel terminology for such fine machinery and quite right too. Mercedes much prefers the term "Estate …

2007-09-05 05:43 In-game ads go the teevee model route
If you stop to think about what sort of impact videogames will have on folks once they're stuffed full of advertising, your brain might leak some fluid a bit. Think about it: a giant industry, huge. Pretty much no ads. Games teach, games make you think, games are "addictive" because they can be so fun to play, games have hours and hours of eyeball time smeared all over them. Game players spend comparative or more time playing games than they do watching TV, which currently commands the highest a …

I have been trying to ignore the news cycle - and blogging for that matter - over this long holiday weekend, but something about this whole Larry Craig l'affaire de restroom bugs me. First, let me make it clear that I have little doubt that the man is a pervert who was looking to engage in public sex in an airport restroom. The description of his actions by the arresting officer makes it pretty clear that Craig was up to something. With that said, the description of Craig's actions by the arrest …

In the "Why didn't we think of that" department, one of the coolest new toys this yearis the EyeClops Bionic Eye . It's kind of like a high-tech, interactiveversion of the old-fashioned microscope. You plug the EyeClops into your TV (no software required), point thelighted "eyeball" at any object (like bugs or hair or your sister) and it lets you see the object, magnified up to 200 times. To get a better idea of how it works, watch thevideo here. -- E. Christian Moore
