Wall Street Journal : Microsoft Corp. agreed to invest $240 million for a 1.6% stake in Facebook Inc. that values the social-networking site at $15 billion, beating Google Inc. in a closely watched contest. As part of the deal, the two companies expanded their existing advertising agreement. Microsoft, which previously handled Facebook's U.S. ad sales, will now also sell the site's international advertising. "We are pleased to take our Microsoft partnership to the next level," said Owen Van Natt …

2007-08-30 08:20  How to Use Social Networks to Find Gigs
By Mathias Meyer I can see through you. You read the headline and think œ MySpace . Far from it. It s true that social networks are all the rage these days. Every day a number of new communities pop up on the scene. Some are for fun, but some can be quite useful, especially for the job-seeking freelancer. MySpace for some is only a place to hang out, chat, be friends with hundreds of bands, or just have cool-looking personal pages. For others MySpace is a place to get new gigs. I know many peop …

2007-08-21 12:59  Social Media and Recruitment: what is fair game in the war for talent
http://www.ahselection.com/blog Ten years ago, advertising for talent was a relatively straightforward affair. By placing an advert in a national newspaper or specialist title, you could be pretty confident of receiving a good response. Those days are, of course, long gone. As well as print, there a now a huge proliferation of online job boards to choose from, and we've seen the widespread adoption of 'marketing-led' approaches to recruitment, from outdoor to pay per click. On top of all this, s …

2007-08-20 12:44  UK Recruiting, Social Networking and Communication
A couple of weeks ago I started recruiting in the London/The UK (in addition to the US).  The differences are quite subtle when it comes to finding someone there vs. here.  To begin with, the people seem to be a whole lot nicer when a recruiter calls or emails them.  Apparently there are not a handful of major job boards that everyone swears by.  Posting to job boards there does not elicit the same sort of response as it does here either.  I have had far fewer responses than I would get in the U …

2007-08-16 20:05  We Need Structured Portable Social Networks (SPSN)
Scrolling through my "trash" e-mail address to report spam, I spotted (quite by chance, I have to say) a nice e-mail from Barney, who works at Lijit. Barney asked me if I had any feedback, which I'll give in my next post, because I need to digress a bit here. Lijit is a really fun and smart search tool which allows to search through a person's complete online presence, a remedy, in a way, to the increasing fragmentation of online identity that's bothering me so much these days. Actually, it was …

2007-08-15 12:15  For Your Own Security
We strongly recommend that you not pass along your XING login data to any other application on other social networks. At present, XING has not yet granted authorization for any application programmed by a third party to request your login data. For your own security, we blocked a XING-sync application which appeared on facebook last night. If you happened to try out the application (i.e., if you typed in your login data), we recommend you change your password immediately. We do our best to ensur …

2007-08-14 02:43  Attention Corporates
After the many discussions this week around Facebook and with many external media references to my recent post on Corporates Blocking Facebook, it's become quite clear that the major banks and other corporates in South Africa that are blocking Facebook because they think that it will stem the tide of social networking that is occurring over the web. Right - people are now going to stop sharing, chatting, communicating, etc - because Facebook is blocked... Wrong! They will just move elsewhere - b …

Facebook is fun. Period. That is the main difference to all the other social networks. Xing or LinkedIn let you collect your contacts in an address book on steroids. But you don't get much fun interaction. Facebook is different. I visit it once a day to get an update ...

2007-08-03 03:52  I feel scattered
For many years, my only deliberate web outlet was here (or the predecessor site, which I migrated here as best as I could when it came time to leave EditThisPage). But now I'm using Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Xing, and Flickr, and I feel rather scattered - if I've updated my status on Twitter or Facebook, I feel less of a need to write a blog posting here; similarly, if I post a photo on Flickr, why repeat the effort here (Ignore the fact that I post to Flickr directly from my iPhone, and so t …

2007-07-23 09:03  Giving FaceBook a GO (for now)
After MUCH peer pressure in the Valley (yes, that means Silicon Valley -- the land where I currently play), I finally surrendered and joined FaceBook. Frankly, I still don't get it. That said, I felt the pressure following far too many trusted sources egging me on at every industry event. They were either shocked I was NOT on this ever-growing and wildly popular social network OR bugged me more than once to accept them as friends. When they ask me 'why' I haven't gone to the light side, I can't …

2007-07-21 17:23  Subway Stations of the Internet
By Brady Forrest This is the top left corner of Web Trend Map 2007 Version 2. It's based on the Japanese subway system. The creators are Information Architects, a Japan-based design agency. They took the top 200 tech (definitely tech) sites and placed them along subway lines. The lines are used to group together similar services. For example along the blue Community line there's Facebook, Xing (think European Linkedin), Vox and LinkedIn. Each one also has a weather forecast and an incremental we …

2007-07-15 02:26  What and how to measure Social Networking websites
By social networking websites, I am talking about the likes of Facebook, Myspace, Linkedin, Xing and StudiVZ (and of course any other web property who are engaged in Social Media activities like any decent blog you know). Social Networking is the prime headline for Web 2.0 and highly successful so far. This fact only leading towards an even greater responsibility in trying to measure ROI on ones social networking activities, especially as it is somehow agreed upon that only a limited number of p …

2007-07-09 12:25  Unified Social Networks: A Case For Federation
The consumer market has long been active in the area of social networking sites. Facebook is currently on a very strong media coverage power-curve at the moment. Xing is receiving a lot of media coverage as well (primarily in Europe). And now there appears to be some activity within Yahoo and Google (see article below). Enterprise software vendors are also focusing on the market opportunity represented by social networking. IBM Lotus Connections is perhaps the most anticipated offering by a trad …
