2007-11-06 12:50 Blue Plate Special
It was another one of those Uni Watch red-alert moments last night, as about a dozen readers e-mailed me all at once and another half-dozen or so posted all at once in the comments section. The cause Jason Strudwick of the Rangers got in a fight and his nameplate came loose during the fisticuffs, revealing some nasty-looking adhesive residue on the underside. All of which is very entertaining. But here's my question: Since when have the Rangers been using nameplates I always thought they used di …

Se llama : OpenSocial API blog y su primer post comienza tal que así: " The web is better when it's social" Friday, November 2, 2007 at 1:15 AM Posted by Amar Gandhi and Peter Chane, Group Product Managers There's no denying that the web enables communication. The killer apps of the web -- email, instant messaging, blogging -- have enabled us to communicate with our friends, family, and the rest of the world on a large scale. But there is a newer …

2007-10-26 19:21 Facebook is not social media
I have recently been reading, slowly and with considerable effort, Hannah Arendt's The Human Condition. What I have read seems to suggest a surprising conclusion: Facebook.com, and many other comparable forms of what is commonly called "social media" or "social computing", is not fundamentally "social". I try to explain the line of this thought, with help from Arendt's book. A fundamental concept for her is vita activa, consisting of three fundamental human activities labor, work, and action. Th …

Wall Street Journal : Microsoft Corp. agreed to invest $240 million for a 1.6% stake in Facebook Inc. that values the social-networking site at $15 billion, beating Google Inc. in a closely watched contest. As part of the deal, the two companies expanded their existing advertising agreement. Microsoft, which previously handled Facebook's U.S. ad sales, will now also sell the site's international advertising. "We are pleased to take our Microsoft partnership to the next level," said Owen Van Natt …

2007-10-20 03:21 Elitists, citizens, young folks, journalism
Andrew Keen (author of Cult of the Amateur ) makes a good talk show guest, and a good panelist too. He's patient. Smart. Calm. Doesn't shout. Doesn't get angry. Makes some rather weird facial expressions sometimes, but on the whole, he's very civil. Keen has adopted a position that social networking is basically bad for society. He's concerned that all this user-generated content, blogs, etc., are going to "ruin media." Keen was one of three panelists in a discussion hosted by CBC News (you can …

2007-10-18 19:15 MySpace Platform Coming Soon
It looks like they were both right: TechCrunch was right in saying that MySpace was planning a platform to rival Facebook's ; Valleywag was right in saying it won't premier this week. MySpace CEO Chris DeWolfe (speaking alongside Rupert Murdoch) announced yesterday that they "are opening our platform in the next couple of months," according to Reuters. The article has a few details about the pending platform (all emphasis added): DeWolfe said he was seeking to create a far more lucrative environ …

2007-10-15 01:30 Start the Presses - 10e20 Media Roundup
I have been meaning to post these 3 great articles in which we were featured last week but just got the time now. A few weeks ago I was at a conference and had the pleasure of quickly meeting and then listening to Barry Diller speak. One of the topics he spoke about was his search engine Ask.com's ad deal with Google and whether or not they were going to renew it. I spoke to a reporter about this a few weeks ago and said that I thought Google would wind up getting the business in the long run bu …

Are you famous yet Have you pledged your support to Britney Spears like YouTube celebrity, Chris Crocker, who was recently on Jimmy Kimmel Live Are you taking pictures for Nissan, like Flickr's Rebekka Guöleifsdóttir Or is your band the hottest thing on MySpace since Arctic Monkeys The prospect of instant fame is Web 2.0's strongest selling point. User generated content--created by everyday people--is driving the Web, and experts say that by 2010, 70 percent of onlline content will be generated …

2007-10-12 18:17 DREADLETTERS: More Ways To Be A Catholic Christian (After Charles Taylor) - DREADNOUGHTERS Reply
[ UPDATE ] Vatican suspends Monsignor Tommaso Stenico, of the Congregation for the Clergy, after he is filmed admitting to 'gay' sex. Mons. Stenico said he 'didn't feel like' he was sinning. To be clear, Stenico's emotions are mostly irrelevant. An affective marker is not necessary to a determination of the wrongfulness or otherwise of any particular act (otherwise we'd have to say that only remorseful killers are murderers, etc). Catholics are not slaves to the ' dictatorship of relativism '. : …

The more I find new blogs, the less I find time read them. Simple mathematics. I recently came across a nice little web toy called Netvibes, which allows me, amongst other things, to collect the blogs I read more or less regularly in rather appealing fashion, and under a variety of user defined tabs. Until now, I used Bloglines, but never liked the interface much, so Netvibes has proved a much more friendly and usable tool. It also allows me to collect bookmarks, notes, Facebook, Twitter, Last.f …

2007-10-03 06:59 Adding Grease to hRelease
I'm now behind in my schedule for making more progress on hRelease. We have the hRelease Working Group Discussion Site setup (there's still room for tech-minded folk - email me!!) and I had done some work on the wiki toward a practical demo. The wiki just wasn't working for me. The formatting was causing me trouble and I was fighting with it. Today, I gave up on the wiki and got through most of what I wanted to do in good ole MS Word. I'll post my work back to the wiki soon, but at least I …

2007-10-02 14:13 Demographics of my friends and "friends"
I have a Facebook page. I feel I'm too old for non-anonymous MySpace page so I went with the more "classy" Facebook. My friend list is rather small but growing ever so slowly. Currently it is 4 at four - Canada Guy #1, his wife, Shan and Earl (who was once a blogger back when he was single and angst-ridden). Recently, I updated my education section to include the high school and the year of graduation. Today, I found a message from a guy that I was kinda sorta friends with back in the day. I tal …

2007-09-27 15:30 Global Social Networking Machinations: Facebook Takes UK, Friendster on the Move in Asia
It turns out that the hype about Facebook this year ain't just hype. In the UK, Facebook has surpassed reigning global social networking champ MySpace for the first time, with a whopping 541% increase in audience since December 2006 (MySpace rose a relatively sedate 20% during the same period). Meanwhile, Bebo, a company you don't hear about a lot in the US, moved to take a strong third in Britain. And over on the other side of the planet, Friendster a site often thought of as an also ran in web …
