As a matter of fact, the world production of oil has now held constant for about 30 months, but the world's demand for oil has been steadily going up. Quelle: PEAK OIL -- (House of Representatives - November 01, 2007) Da kommt mit doch just dieser alte Witz über Ökonomen in den Sinn: Two economists find themselves locked in a basement. They're not sure what time it is, because it's dark and they can't read their watches. They think it's nearly dinner time, cause they're starting to feel hungry. …

2007-10-18 06:00 Adi Shamir in Amsterdam

2007-10-15 21:29 Paper or Plastic
Zen alerted me to the Blog Action Day today, and the theme for 2007 is "environment." What with Gore and IPCC winning the Nobel peace prize last week, and the people behind the recent attack to discredit Gore's film revealed (thank you, SourceWatch ), "environment" seems like an apt choice to blog about. Here's a personal observation. When I came to the US many moons ago, I somehow found my way to the Harvest Co-operative market in Cambridge, and it still ranks as one of the best finds. I found …

2007-10-12 20:34 Al Gore and the finite resource
Congratulations to Al Gore on the award of the Nobel Peace Prize. He has done so much to draw attention to global climate change. The BBC website records his comment: "I will be doing everything I can to try to understand how to best use the honour and recognition of this award as a way of speeding up the change in awareness, and the change in urgency." As I listened to the news report this evening, the story switched to those critics of Gore. They would have us believe that there is no climate …

Thanks to all of you for your insightful comments on the previous post. You have grappled gamely with the problem I raised: Did Jesus make an error when he (evidently) predicted that the eschaton would come within a generation of his ministry You offered the following solutions: The Son of Man coming in his kingdom (Mark 9:1 // Mt. 16:28 // Luke 9:27) may have referred to the transfiguration. (suggested by James) In context, Mark 13:29-30 (// Mt. 24:34 // Luke 21:32) may have referred to the des …

2007-10-05 00:05 Stephen Hawking Asks Why are We Here & Where Did We Come From
I admit it. I love Stephen Hawking. I love that computerized voice of his. I'm inspired by his story and I just can't get enough of hearing him break down the universe in a way even a simpleton like me can understand. That's why I was so pleased to discover a transcript of a lecture he gave across the Bay at UC - Berkeley offering a summary of where we are in relation to understanding the origin of the Universe. The expansion of the universe was discovered by Edwin Hubble in the 1920s and was …

2007-10-04 16:31 the seattlist, part 2
as both of my loyal readers know i recently went to a wonderful conference in seattle, at mars hill. this is the second in a series regarding ideas that found their germination or feeding during said trip. one of the many insightful things that harold best brought up during his intense and dense talks was the idea of language being sacred, in a sense. perhaps to put it better, he challenged post-modernity on the grounds of its devaluation of language. my understanding of the post-modern approach …

2007-10-03 12:07 I Can't Believe you Get Paid for this, Terrence
In one of the least surprising developments in Atlanta sports history, Terrence Moore thinks the Braves should keep Andruw Jones. Does he examine Jones's record to give us hope that his disastrous 2007 was a fluke Does he attempt to justify making a long-term commitment to a guy who doesn't pay so much attention to staying in shape Does he make the argument that Jones is worth the $15-18M per year that it will apparently take to sign him No. He's Terrence Moore and he wants a unicorn to come dow …

2007-10-02 16:39 Thinking about Lent
Those who know me well have probably figured out that I tend to be consumed by whatever it is that I am working on. I'm thankful that my family and friends bear with me in that regard, even if they do not always understand why whatever it happens to be should be so important to me. I suppose that some of those things probably shouldn't be so important to me. I'm always wrestling with the temptation to make false gods out of my own works and efforts. But I hope it is not always or entirely wrong …

2007-10-02 01:24 More Notes on Hartshorne, II
1. Aquinas, our author charges, had never had an idea of "pure actuality." ( Creative Synthesis and Philosophic Method, 70) Poor St. Thomas. He built his entire metaphysics and theology on the idea of the pure actuality of God. And, oddly enough, he did not know what he meant by it! Well, given the distinction I stress below of the 3rd-level charity and 2nd-level God, the seeming contradiction of "a being both in all respects independent, yet also cognizant, of the contingent world," is neatly s …

First, I'd like to thank everyone who commented last week. I actually feel a bit humbled by the number of people who showed up to congratulate me. No, I didn't spend the week celebrating. I have kids and they get sick, and viruses don't time their arrival for when it's convenient, unfortunately. But my husband did bring me so many flowers that it took three vases to contain them all. He's proud of me. *silly grin* A number of you are asking when my Touch books are coming out. Truth is, I don't k …

2007-09-29 00:21 Hartshorne and Becoming vs. Being
The reason why Hartshorne privileges becoming over being, as I understand it, is that he thinks that becoming involves new experiences or novelty or creative advance; it embodies change and therefore life. Being, on the contrary, is static and dead. This reminds me of Mises: The state of absolute perfection must be conceived as complete, final, and not exposed to any change. Change could only impair its perfection and transform it into a less perfect state; the mere possibility that a change can …

2007-09-19 22:53 Why the 650b wheel movement in mountain biking should be killed before it gets started
I'll say it. Do it now. Just kill it. DoA. Please. Just when the industry seems to be embracing the 29er wheel platform, in comes the next blast from the past bike trend. Enter the 650b wheel platform. When tires are added to this mostly abandoned wheel-base, we are presented with a 27 and a half inch tire, halfway between the 26er and the 29er. Look. I could care less what you ride. If you want to ride a 650b go ahead and do it. My thing is that I don't want the industry diverting it's energy t …

It hit me this past week, like a wave washing over me out of nowhere. I'm not sure why, but there it was. It's not as though I haven't felt or experienced this before. When I officiated Nick and Naomi's wedding a few years ago, and then when they moved away from South Bend to Cleveland, I certainly had a sense of separation and loss that came pretty close to that of bidding farewell to one of my own children. After all, I've known Naomi since she was twelve, and she and my DoRena have been the b …

I respect that each connection in my life will find its own right place, time, and spirit with an appreciative understanding that each connection evolves in unpredictable ways. I've been a Footnote.com subscriber for awhile now, but hadn't really spent a lot of time with it until recently. When I first started with it, it seemed to have a lot of fairly obscure documents, such as the city council minutes of South Boston, Virginia. Frankly, what brought me back to explore it again was a series of interesting posts by Miriam Midkiff at Ancestories in which the stories she told were tied to documents on Footnote.com. Now I'm quite a bit more impressed. Partnerships with th …

2007-09-12 04:30 Hope Is An Act of Will
Several long-time activists have told me recently they are overwhelmed, worried, and think that we may be losing the struggle to end the imperial wars, save our Constitution, and stop false flag terrorism. One very smart friend asked me if there is any basis for hope. But hope is an act of will, not a passive mood. Admittedly, things are easier when circumstances bring hope to us, and we can just receive the hopeful and inspiring news. But if we care about winning, we have to be able to decide t …

2007-09-10 00:43 Twenty Questions for Dr. Bear (Part the Third In Which I Say Something Nice About France)
Hey Dr. Bear, you are something of a critic of the "old school." What was wrong with the way doctors were trained in the past and why should we change things if the old ways have worked so well When I was a structural engineer, I had an old-school boss who had never quite made the philosophical jump into the computer era. Oh sure, he accepted that computers were essential to the business of engineering but he obviously longed for the Good Old Days when engineers made all their calcuations with a …

2007-09-06 05:30 Praying for the angels
I forget to pray for the angels and then the angels forget to pray for us. Leonard Cohen ("So Long, Marianne") Now would the angels really do that If biblical and other sources are correct, there is a finite, rather small number of angels. They must be very powerful to remember each one of us. And they must be in all places at all times.
