Katie Melua *"I Do Believe In Love"* "They say we never landed on the moon There's no wind there, they assume I guess conspiracies are nothing new, But I'm sure I've been there with you. 2007-10-23 18:23  America's war without end
By Simon Tisdall (THE GUARDIAN, 23/10/07): Planned US spending on the "global war on terror" is set to rise sharply in the coming year, despite claims from the president, George Bush, that al-Qaida is on the run in Iraq. A funding request sent to Congress this week seeks $196.4bn (£96bn) for counter-terrorism in 2007-8, $25bn up on this year. The Pentagon's separate budget request amounts to an additional $481.4bn. Justifying these whopping increases, Mr Bush repeats a favourite mantra, that "Am …

Oh, there's always someone out there who wants to suck the fun out of life, isn't there Usually it's your local politician who would like to tell you how to live, or some know-it-all news reporter who would like to tell you what they think you should know, or your mom who wants to keep you alive. Anyway. LifeHacker blows some common Trick-or-Treat myths out of the water. Go read it and relax already. Let your munchkin enjoy herself this year and you, too. 2007-10-21 08:52  Fun With Tisza
Tisza Major-Posner  drove up to Los Gatos from Claremont last Sunday and we had a chance to show her around our fair town  on Monday. Thought the Active Rain and Project Blogger community would enjoy seeing a few photos of our fun in Silicon Valley and Santa Cruz.... Enjoy! Our home sits at the very base of some foothills (which enjoy a view) and to begin our introductory tour of Los Gatos, I drove Tisza (and my daughter) to the top. Normally you can see not only downtown San Jose, but all the w …

2007-10-19 14:19  Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon, First Impressions
The new Ubuntu was released yesterday. I didn't have time to upgrade or play with it since I was working. I figured that I shouldn't feel stressed while upgrading. So I waited until today for the upgrade. My system originated as a Edgy Eft (6.10) system, then got upgraded to Feisty Fawn (7.04) in April, and now it got upgraded once again. I was a little nervous about upgrading an already upgraded system, but decided that I'd try that route and if it went fubar I would just do a clean install ins …

It's another Friday, the start of the weekend. Here's my feast to end the week, at least on a good note. Appetizer If you were a dog, what breed would you be, and why I'll be a shitzu. It's the cutest dog I've ever seen. Besides, it's cuddly, just like me! :p Soup What does the color purple make you think of Here in the Philippines, the color purple is associated with death, mainly because of the trimmings in flowers given to the dead during the wake. That's the reason why I'm not so fond of it. …

2007-10-19 12:13  FRIDAY, Oct. 19, 2007 - Frederick J. Healy
Relative difficulty: Medium THEME: none Blogger is being SUPER slow this morning - I type a sentence and the letters take forever to appear on the screen - so I'm going to wrap this up quickly to keep from punching my computer. Liked the puzzle, though thought it was really inconsistent, difficulty-wise, from one quadrant to the next. My time was avg-to-slow (just over 10), primarily because I lost a ton of time during a free fall in the NE. If I had to rate the puzzle's difficulty by quadrants …

2007-10-18 05:50  Stick a hose in my ear and I'll do your drapes
Science tells us that 99% of all matter is empty space. While this fact may boggle and bewilder some folk, I find it quite easy to grasp this concept, for nowhere is this vacuum more evident than within my own brain. I've been having a lot of "empty brain" moments lately, mostly when I try to write. It's kind of a literary version of the "then a miracle occurs" cartoon: I am at a starting point, usually a blank screen, and while I know what I want to say, the procedure of how I intend to say it …

Since Christmas is around the corner, I tried answering some of the Christmas quizzes and surveys available online. I had fun answering a couple and it helps kill time too when you're bored. Erect Sawaru is a doujin veteran of many years, and one whose work I've not always been fond of - his books tended in the past to be incredibly messy, to the point that it was nearly impossible to tell what was going on. This first collected volume of his serialized works carries over many of the traits of his doujin, but contains enough stuff from his more recent period to make it worth a second look. Note: this is a hardcore [ERO] book. If you're under 18 or not interested in hardcore content …

Yes, the Foo Fighters.  A band I felt the most affection for in late fall/early winter 2003.  Listening to One By One brings back memories of feeling abandoned by Bianca*, of feeling unfairly marginalized as part of the Ac Chal Team, and of being obsessed with Melvin*. This was the album I listened to on the way to Bianca's* house on December 8th, 2005, in order to at least TRY to regain those feelings I had for Melvin* back then as they slowly slipped away and I fell for Zach*.  I felt as thoug …

The pipe of Stalin V. Deni, 1930 Ideas are far more powerful than guns. We don't allow our enemies to have guns, why should we allow them to have ideas Joseph Stalin Stalin was an avid smoker. But unlike Winston Churchill who was a cigar man, Stalin liked pipes. They say he was not fond of the special pipe tobacco, but was filling his pipe with contents of œGertsegovina Flor cigarettes. Apparently these cigarettes were very different from those available for general public, so the overall qual …

As the inveterate librarian optimist, I think that expanding OA presents some great opportunities for librarians, but there are plenty of potential hazards along the way. It's been a disappointment that there's been so little substantive discussion (at …

'Good morning, good morning,' I said. 'I want a book.' Of course, I ought to have known that it's silly to try and buy a book when you go to a book shop. It merely startles and bewilders the inmates. The motheaten old bird who had stepped forward to attend to me ran to form. 'A book, sir' he said, with ill-concealed astonishment. 'Spinoza,' I replied, specifying. This had him rocking back on his heels. 'Did you say Spinoza, sir' 'Spinoza was what I said.' He seemed to be feeling that if we talke …

I have no story to tell. If I did have one, what difference would it make in the world, anyway The way I see it, the world is the sum of its infinite parts - every single bit of matter, molecule, atom, reason, emotion, consciousness - all of them are as much part of the world as any group or combination formed from them. Individuals are, after all, at their most basic level, a collection of sub-microscopic inaminate objects(or perhaps they do move, maybe even of their own volition - science mere …

As my Number One Son is fond of reminding me, people can be really stupid. I found this little quiz, "An artist or a hack" quite annoying. The other are from one commercial writer, who achived [sic] popularity among uneducated people, but failed to make a contribution to Literature. Can you tell the difference between their prose Since the bias of the individual who wrote the quiz was patently obvio …

2007-10-15 05:51  Tomahawk and Tru-Catch
Tomahawk and Tru -Catch Originally uploaded by dawnkua. I managed to speak with a caregiver who had used the Tomahawk and Tru -Catch traps. She mentioned that she preferred the Tru -Catch (which is similar to the ones we have) because she said they are larger and hence are a bit more spacious for the cats. She mentioned she'd not too fond of the spring on the back door of the Tomahawk either and preferred just typing the one on the Tru -Catch down.
