2007-11-01 11:43 And Look, There's a Young Marge Schott in the Front Row
A couple of Sunday nights ago at about 10 p.m., someone posted a comment that read, "Women's Nazi Hockey Team." It linked to the photo shown at right (here's a larger view ). Since Sunday night is a low-traffic period for the site, nobody responded and the whole thing passed unnoticed. Coupla things here: First of all, this is not a Nazi team. In fact, this is an Edmonton team called the Swastikas, which played in 1916 - four years before the National Socialist German Workers Party (i.e., the Na …

2007-10-31 12:25 What, No Fenway Franks
Editor's Note: Reader Mario Fontana recently alerted me to a unique project he's involved in. When I invited him to tell me more, he whipped up a full-fledged blog post, complete with photo links. I'm happy to present it here as a guest-written entry on the site. - PL By Mario Fontana In August I played in the sixth annual Travis Roy Foundation Wiffle Ball Tournament in Essex, Vermont. The tournament was created to help benefit the foundation which helps support victims of spinal cord injuries. …

2007-10-30 12:04 Uni Watch Book Club: The Football Book
New ESPN column today - here's the link. Meanwhile: For months now people have been telling me to pick up a copy of The Football Book, part of a series of coffee table books produced by Sports Illustrated. Last week I finally got around to getting a copy, and sure enough, it's loaded with great uni-related photos. The only problem is that the book is too big to fit in my scanner, so I had to take photos of the pages. Here's a sampling: As you'd expect, there are lots of great helmet photos. Amon …

2007-10-29 12:23 Monday Morning Uni Watch
It's good to see that all the finest aspects of pro football were on display yesterday in London, where the Giants and Dolphins sloshed around in the mud for three hours before adjourning for fish and chips. But Mark Roberts (or, as the wire service captions identified him, "serial streaker Mark Roberts") gave us plenty of Uni Watch fodder, even with his abbreviated attire. Consider: NFL officials wear socks with two white stripes, but college and high school zebras wear socks with Northwestern …

2007-10-19 19:07 Rancho Santa Margarita - Central Park
Rancho Santa Margarita's Central Park is a perfect place to unwind at the end of the day. The park is situated next to City Hall onLa Miranda, near El Paseo. Wide-open grassy areas are ideal for tossing around a football or brushing up on frisbee skills. The popular tot-lot is a favorite with parents and kids alike. While the wee ones are burning off a seemingly endless supply of energy, work-weary parents can grab a seat on one of the many conveniently located benches, and strike up a conv …

2007-10-19 13:06 Shake down the thunder from the sky: Trojan terror over South Bend!
The entire USC football team had a near-death experience on their chartered plane in the skies over South Bend last night: USC players, coaches and supporters aboard the team's charter flight from Los Angeles endured a harrowing arrival in South Bend, Ind., on Thursday night. Several players, administrative staff and coaches' spouses said passengers were hurled out of their seats and hit their heads on the ceiling when the plane dropped while making an approach through a lightning storm. The pil …

2007-10-19 11:20 PES 2008 Hits North American Xbox Live
Well this is going to confuse more than a few Americans who don't quite get the whole football VS football thing. The PES (Pro Evolution Soccer) 2008 demo is up now on the North American branch of Xbox Live Marketplace, and it is listed as "A stunningly real, breathtakingly beautiful football game!" Even with the tiny pack shot proclaiming it as soccer for the football impaired, I'm sure more than a few casual Xbox Live users will download this demo only to be confused by the fact that the team …

2007-10-19 08:22 Thoughts on USF-Rutgers
Sunday Morning Quarterback -- who is rapidly becoming my favorite college-football blogger -- offers an articulate and accurate perspective, IMHO, on South Florida's loss to Rutgers last night: It doesn't diminish the chances of the BCS being seized by chaos, but the season does get that much less interesting for Cinderella sympathists and well-wishers (and satirists, if they recognize setbacks), whose last feel-good hopes rest solely with Kansas. ... In the bigger picture, it's just another rem …

2007-10-19 01:26 Putin Ramps up Cold War II with Nuclear Threat to the U.S.
Yup, I've said it before, and I'll say it again, "Putin is evil." No doubt about it... Putin goes live on TV phone-in to escalate nuclear war of words Luke Harding in Moscow Friday October 19, 2007 The Guardian President Vladimir Putin said yesterday that Russia was developing a new generation of nuclear weapons as part of a "big, grandiose" plan to boost the country's defences against the US. Speaking during his annual live question-and-answer session, Mr Putin said Russia was upgrading its nuc …

2007-10-18 19:35 Fragments of Small Town Friday Night
Small town Friday night, football game. Goofy older guy dancing a crazy pantomime to show us where to park. Patience with the parent volunteer who has trouble with Two adults and three children please. Really, what s the rush honey, take your time. I ordered hot chocolate the entire concession stand cheered, it was the first one this year. NOW it s football season! Felt like the millionth customer the way they celebrated. Ritter Park, Huntington, WV Click to View Show My family and I spent a recent Saturday morning in Ritter Park. The main point of our visit was to see the pink bridge. I have friends who are battling cancer, and I loved the quiet reminder of a pink bridge. I imagine people driving over it on their way here and there, maybe remembering people they love. I love that it provides an awareness in an unusual, public way. We also had a great time exploring Ritter Park. I hadn't been there since I was a …

2007-10-18 16:00 You Gotta Love High School Sports Pranks!
Pranks are fun, aren't they People from one rival high school coming up with a master plan to have some fun at the other school's expense, and vice versa. Well, it's all fun and games until someone slaughters a deer. According to Austin, Texas news outlet KVUE, a high school prank got some people a little miffed: "When fans of Blanco High School in the Hill Country held signs reading "Slaughter the Deer," they apparently weren't just flush with team spirit. The Comfort High School Deers volleyba …

2007-10-18 08:28 More Irish-Trojan humor
From comments yesterday (modified slightly for family-friendliness): Did you hear the one about the guy who has this dog, and he says, "My dog Max is the biggest USC Trojan football fan of any damn dog in the country. Every year when USC plays Notre Dame, he gets so excited! Every time 'SC scores a touchdown, he jumps up and down and barks, and when USC wins the game, he does back-flips and cartwheels." So the guy's buddy says, "Well, what's he do when Notre Dame beats USC" The guy says, "I don' …

So, school continues to suck really a lot. I'm seriously morose by the time I get home in the afternoon. ._. Today everybody was supposed to wear black, which was spread around yesterday by text message, and since unlike the rest of my generation my phone is not attached to me 24/7, I didn't know this. Yeah, because text messaging is the ONLY POSSIBLE WAY to communicate nowadays. But I did happen to wear navy blue so that was better than nothing, I guess. Tomorrow everybody's wearing tye-dye so …

2007-10-17 18:00 Milestone Brew: A Golden (Era) Lager
Let's go get some brew. This football season has stirred up many debates, as all of the preseason top 10 teams have lost at least one game. Ohio State has done what they were supposed to do against inferior opponents, win all of their games and dominate while doing so. Now they sit atop all the rankings and have 5 games left against 5-2 teams. While it is easy for non-fans to bash Buckeye Nation, due to the BCS debacle and current Big Ten reputation, I thought I would take a few minutes to make …

2007-10-17 16:07 Doctors Earning Their Keep In St. Louis
Not long ago, I wrote an article wondering whether the Cardinals were hit with more injuries than any other team in the Major Leagues. It was debatable, but if they weren't hit with the most injuries, they were up there. After the baseball season ended, most Rams fans were pretty excited about the team. Nobody was predicting Super Bowl success, but 9 wins seemed like a very realistic goal, given the plethora of offensive talent and some improvements made on the defensive side of the ball. Six ga …
