2007-10-12 09:02 Excerpt: Julius Evola - Fascism Against Christianity
Today we must absolutely put a stop to Christianity. Everything in it is incompatible with and contradictory to the ideals, the morals, the vision of the world and of man that would enable a race to bring about the resurrection of the empire. Our sleep has lasted long enough. All the possible compromises and variations have been exhausted. It is time to say "Enough!" No more of Christianity embraced as a whole, in the totality of all its forms! The Latin race in particular must bitterly disavow …

2007-10-08 18:14 Blogging the Lectionary (10/14/07)
The Gospel reading for Sunday, October 14th is the same as what is assigned to Thanksgiving Day, all three years of the Lectionary, Luke 17:11-19 11 On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him. Keeping their distance, 13 they called out, saying, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!" 14 When he saw them, he said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they went, they were made clean. 15 …

2007-10-02 06:23 Review: "Jovani" Restaurant, Tiberias, Israel
Delicious ravioli at "Jovani" TIberias, Israel We're on our way from Jerusalem up to Vered Hagalil. No GPS, but this looks easy on the map. We just need to pass through Tiberias, stay on the same road headed north around the Sea of Galilee (Kinerret), and we should be there in half an hour. Pretty much follow the coast. Hmm, the road is turning inland. We must have missed the turn. Let's try again. Hmm, no obvious main road headed up the coast. All these side streets dead end. Maybe the turn was …

Breakfast at Yotvata Kosher (Dairy) Restaurant in Tel Aviv Breakfast in Israel is kind of an amazing thing, and a vegetarian's paradise. Our first venue was the Dan Panorama Hotel in Jerusalem where we were treated to an unbelievable buffet that is included in the room price. Five enormous tables had perhaps fifty or more choices including cheeses, yogurts, and labnehs, breads of all sorts, sweet and savory pastries such as borekas, half a dozen fresh salads that changed daily, an omelette and p …

2007-09-10 07:51 There Is No End To This Song
F ellow church members often feel inspired to edge away from me as I start (rather softly) singing alternative words to hymns. I can't help it! Some songs just beg for a little change. Sure we can sing about pioneers pushing their carts, but it really sounds like "And we hear the desert singing, Carrion! Carrion! Carrion!" And "Whose on the Lord side Whoooooo" really fits well to the child's game, "What does the wolf say Woooooooo!" Of all the songs in the hymnal the most tedious of hymns is, "I …

2007-09-03 15:55 Perfidy
Via The Jewish Press Blog : On December 8, 1983, a child named Dani Katz walked to the street outside his parent's home in the Dania neighborhood of Haifa. He was 14. His parents were Holocaust survivors. Outside the home, he was kidnapped by a group of Arabs from the Israeli Galilee town of Sakhnin who held jobs in the Dania neighborhood. They took him to a cave near Sakhnin. There they tortured him in the most brutal and horrific way imaginable. They eventually murdered him. After murdering hi …

2007-09-01 12:44 Ghost Walker on the Water
I see a strong parallel between Peter's experience walking on the water in the storm with Jesus and the larger story of Peter's life overall. I believe that Jesus gave this experience to Peter to prepare him for the intense pressures he would experience during the final days of Jesus' life. But while Peter failed to apply the lesson he could have learned from getting soaked in the sea, Jesus never gave up rescuing Peter and finally Peter learned to really œwalk on the water for the rest of his …

2007-08-30 12:34 Jesus Was Not A Liberal
Casting Out The Money Changers by Carl Heinrich Bloch (May 23, 1834 February 22, 1890) I have noticed that, from time to time, liberals attempt to claim that Jesus was a liberal. I think the claim stems from the notion that Jesus was "anti-establishment" (which isn't entirely true), that Jesus preached about forgiveness and encouraged leniency (primarily because of the severity of the punishments meted out during His public ministry, not because He didn't believe in punishment; he mentioned the …

2007-08-29 07:04 The Sandal & the Fall of Rome
Archaeologists have discovered a footprint made by the sandal -a hobnailed sandal called caliga- of a Roman soldier in a wall surrounding the Hellenistic-Roman city of Hippos, east of the Sea of Galilee. The ancient city of Hippos (Sussita), at 350 meters above sea level, overlooks the Sea of Galilee. The city was established during the period of Seleucid rule. It flourished during the Roman and Byzantine periods until it was destroyed by an earthquake in the year 749. Hippos, together with Beit …

CATALYST NATION by Rabbi Baruch Binyamin Hakohen Melman It is often said that we are a "chosen nation," based on the term in this week's parsha, that we are an "am segula." And sometimes "am segula" is translated not as "chosen," but as "treasured." But it also has a deeper meaning, a meaning which speaks very deeply to our special destiny vis a vis our special relationship with humanity and the nations of the world. Ignorance of the true meaning of the term has resulted in tragedy in both direc …

2007-08-28 17:14 The Kibbutz Sheds Socialism and Gains Popularity
August 27, 2007 Kibbutz Yasur Journal The Kibbutz Sheds Socialism and Gains Popularity By ISABEL KERSHNER KIBBUTZ YASUR, Israel -- For much of Israel's existence, the kibbutz embodied its highest ideals: collective labor, love of the land and a no-frills egalitarianism. But starting in the 1980s, when socialism was on a global downward spiral and the country was mired in hyperinflation, Israel's 250 or so kibbutzim seemed doomed. Their debt mounted and their group dining halls grew empty as the …

2007-08-28 10:20 Summer Heat Wave (1980)
Cartoonists have this problem. Sometimes when you write about a heat wave you're really talking about things like threats of war, international pressure, and folks in Sderot being under fire. Other times a heat wave is just a heat wave. Today's Golden Oldie is from back in the summer of 1980. The heat wave was just a heat wave. No metaphors intended. Yesterday a friend called on his mobile to tell me that he and his girlfriend were driving to the Galilee for a few days in nature. An hour later m …

2007-08-27 20:03 Living together
A somewhat serendipitous and slightly random collection of links today, but over the last few days I've run across a remarkable number of readings on the topic of communal living. At Click Opera, Momus has a nice little post on Lohmühle which is...rather hard to describe, really. They describe themselves as a ' Gesamtkunstwerk ', as Momus points out, 'a synthesis of the arts, Eden, playground, field of experimentation, lifelong residence, inspiration, childhood dream, magnet, community, paradise …

2007-08-27 14:48 The new Face of the Kibbutz
The Kibbutz has for a long time, even before the inception of the State, been the foremost symbol of Israel. It was the ultimate symbol of socialism that actually worked without a dictatorial hierarchy and then it lost popularity as more western immigrants arrived and new jobs were created and the debt accumulated by this collective farms became staggering. The days of the kibbutz pioneer running around in a kova tembel (a very distinctive looking hat, to protect from the sun) and sun colored sh …

2007-08-27 14:12 The Eclectic Heathen Returns to Church For a Visit
Yesterday, I ventured out into the post-surgery world and went to church. Yes! Imagine, the earth did not cease to rotate. The sky did not fall. In fact, nothing horrible happened to the church because I walked through the doors. But I did receive a warm welcome and, while worship was as bland as ever, I left off critique and criticism for that hour and just sat and absorbed. I even went to Sunday school, which is where church mostly happens anyway. Did I say before that our church is 95% female …

2007-08-27 14:04 How Many Denominations are Too Many for James White
I am rushing to get packed - my wife and I leave Wednesday for Israel and Egypt with a group fo 55 excited pilgrims. You will be able to join us by video for a Virtual Pilgrimage right here on this blog. Each night, Lord willing, I will upload video clips from the day. In the meantime, this morning I post here my response to the discussion on the number of denominations in the world today and how sola Scriptura has been a huge factor in causing, or at least, facilitating this scandalous situatio …
