2007-10-17 15:18 New cardinals
A bit of a surprise was Abp. Daniel DiNardo, 58, who for six years worked at the Vatican's Congregation for Bishops, where he worked for Cardinal Rigali. He was named archbishop last year. There are several other U.S. archdioceses that usually have cardinals leading them, including Washington and Baltimore, but the pope did not elevate their archbishops. Catholic numbers have been rising steadily especially in border states, due to the influx of legal and especially illegal aliens. (Not that Mex …

2007-10-17 05:56 RED DAWN: The List... Already One Short
To put the icing on your Announcement Morning cake, the current holder of the "most reliable Italian vaticanista " crown, Il Giornale's Andrea Tornielli, has just reported that the revelation of the foreseen class of cardinals-designate will, indeed, take place at the General Audience later today. Among other seemingly-certain names cited by Tornielli and others, you can bet that the list will include the archbishops of Barcelona, Bombay, Brasilia, Genoa and Sao Paolo, alongside a boatload of cu …

2007-10-15 00:04 Exploring the Biltmore's Phantom Past
Considering how the Black Dahlia was last seen leaving this majestic hotel just before her 1947 murder, you'd expect the Biltmore's walls to be oozing with ectoplasm. And apparently they are - just not with hers. As is often the case with upscale establishments, Millennium Biltmore management prefers not to indulge rumors of otherworldly guests. Nevertheless, an off-the-record interview I did a few years back with a highly credible source yielded several tales of mysterious phenomenon. First the …

Years after her emergence as a chronicler of the civil rights and black power movements, Nikki Giovanni still cuts an impressive figure. 2007-10-13 13:54 Butternut Squash Risotto and musings from a Book Whore
There was a 'M*A*S*H' episode in which all of the characters were asked what books they had brought with them. Amidst all of the traditional answers of 'the Bible', 'War and Peace', etc., I loved Hawkeye's answer best: "The dictionary; all the other books are in there." And so they are. Betty, of And So Forth (among other blogs) has tagged me for a reading/book meme. Hmmm, me and books! I persist, much against the advice of everyone, in hauling my books with me. They've moved from the U.S. …

2007-10-10 00:03 Google's Great Sputnik Logo Flap
Google the world s largest and most recognizable internet search engine has come under repeated fire over the past near-decade because of its stance on not celebrating Memorial Day in it's logo art; or at least, that s how the right wing conservatives of America are describing it. The internet giant have repeatedly redesigned their logo to celebrate special holidays and remembrances across the world, from Valentine s Day, St. Patrick s Day, the birthday of noted American astronomer Percival Lowe …

These "101% Handcrafted" ads for the Italian boot company Buttero are fabulous looking. The prosthetic hands - stuck on shoe-making machinery - have an industrial goth look. 2007-10-07 07:51 Questions
I just returned from the weekend doughnut run. Not quite the 26.2 I was planning to do today, but life happens. It s a murky 70 degrees at 7:50 and the mercury is only going up from here. It s a 9:15-9:20 running day, so my 4 hour mark wouldn t have materialized. I am happy for the TacMan, he finally gets to run the race he s wanted for a long time. He s healthy, he s trained and he didn t have to fret about this one at all. I hope he has a great day. TCM is one of the best races I ve ever run o …

On the one hand, these virgin colonies were construed as bastions of chastity and prayer, a precious spiritual resource which served to counterbalance the worldliness of the laity. On the other, they were perceived as places of vice and indiscipline, a spiritual liability which put the salvation of the whole republic in jeopardy. [...T] he diarist Girolamo Priuli wrote that the city's nunneries were public bordellos, and the nuns public whores. One of the many things I've learned from studying h …

2007-10-02 06:23 Review: "Jovani" Restaurant, Tiberias, Israel
Delicious ravioli at "Jovani" TIberias, Israel We're on our way from Jerusalem up to Vered Hagalil. No GPS, but this looks easy on the map. We just need to pass through Tiberias, stay on the same road headed north around the Sea of Galilee (Kinerret), and we should be there in half an hour. Pretty much follow the coast. Hmm, the road is turning inland. We must have missed the turn. Let's try again. Hmm, no obvious main road headed up the coast. All these side streets dead end. Maybe the turn was …

2007-10-02 05:17 A funny thing happened on the way to bike heaven....
We all have that little voice inside our head that interjects advice and caution in our day to day. My little voice sounds like Ethel Merman, but that s not the point. I ve grown accustom to down weighting that little voice and allowing others to push it aside. Did you know Ethel made a disco album That s one for the Shuffle. I
found myself at the local bike shop Saturday because I finally listened
to that little voice. I think I need a more sage sounding little voice
like Father Guido, because …

2007-09-25 00:50 Upcoming Kennedy Center Events
Three weekends ago, we were lucky enough to hit "Circus Underground," the annual Kennedy Center Open House Arts Festival. The entire festival is a seven hour free event that brings together all kinds of family friendly preforming arts activities. It was hot, and we had a tiny baby, so our main focus was on the National Symphony Orchestra's "Petting Zoo." This was a fun event where little kids could get their hands on real instruments and receive tips from musicians. My heart melted to see Hannah …

2007-09-18 00:15 Keen Review/Riff IV: Books Without Covers
A couple of years ago, the philosophy professor Harry Frankfurt made publishing history of a sort by allowing his 7,000-word paper œOn Bullshit which lives up pretty well to the second word in its title to be published as a book. Bind some printed pieces of paper together, preferably in hard covers, distribute them via bookstores, at a cost of around $20, and voila, you have a book. If you choose not buy that one, however, you can read the paper free online. A book is thus a cultural artifact …

2007-09-17 10:58 Eric and Autumn
Laura Vivanco Eric's at Romancing the Blog today, asking about romances set in autumn. This picture of Cymon and Iphigenia, although it looks autumnal to me because of the colour-scheme, actually proves Eric's point that "When it comes to love, [...] Spring has always gotten all the best publicity". According to Giovanni Boccacio in the Decameron ( Fifth Day, Novel 1 ), the encounter took place as follows: 'twas the month of May--a mass of greenery; and, as he traversed it, he came, as Fortune w …
