2007-10-12 10:37  Z stands for Me!
ok, i was trying to avoid the most obvious z word in my book, which is my middle name, zoe, the name i've been called since i was an infant. but really, what other z word could be more significant to me my grandfather insisted on calling me zoe from the start, rather then lara, my first name, and his was the word that stuck. zoe was my grandmother's name, and she died while i was in utero. so zoe it is, and zoe it always shall be. zoe and michael, my maternal grandparents i certainly don't mind. …

2007-10-11 10:38  French pot-luck!!!
This past weekend I went to my first pot-luck picnic since I've been living in France!!! (It was held by a club that my kids are in.) In the spirit of true cultural exchange I probably should have brought green jello with grated carrots ( Nomoxian's favorite! ) or tried my hand at fMh Lisa's funeral potatoes. But the problem is that (being an apostate and everything) I don't like funeral potatoes and green jello. So I decided to prepare the one recipe I know and love: Stuffed grape leaves!!! I g …

2007-10-11 09:54  A Martyr in Gaza: Rami Khader Ayyad
Randall Buth in a post at ETC notes the wanton killing of Rami Khader Ayyad, the director of the bookstore of the Palestine Bible Society in Gaza. Bibbiablog has far more information on the killing, from an article in Corriere della Sera, the Italian equivalent of the New York Times. Below the fold I provide details in English translation. ETC s labels for the post, let it be said, are spot on: Bible Society, Christian, Islam, martyr, Middle East. The Bible Society s Gaza bookstore was set on …

L ast Friday morning the traditional neoclassical building, today the Cultural Center of the University of Indianapolis - an architectonic jewel in the traditional old town of Athens at the foot of the Acropolis mountain - was the scenic theatre of the presentation of a book with the skin crawling title "The Coming Balkan Caliphate", written by the American author Christopher Deliso. Deliso is director of Balkanalysis.com, a leading independent online news and analysis group. The site utilizes a …

Robert has finally d ecided to reply .Gene you present some real lack of awareness concerning libertarian conceptions of free will in your post. You said: Really, so God can do evil. God having "libertarian" freedom does not mean He can do good and evil. Libertarian freedom in humans, by definition, requires they can do both good and evil. God can do whatever He wants to do. He does not do evil however, He may have various choices available to Himself, all of which are good choices, He then c …

The festival runs 11 a.m. until Midnight on Thursday and Friday, Noon until Midnight on Sunday, and 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday. Food and dessert are key parts of any Greek Festival. 2007-09-02 01:54  Deaconesslessness
Last week, I received some wondering emails when a couple of gentle commenters discussed the office of "deaconess" in the early Church. As far as I know, the magisterium has not made any definitive statement about the possibility of ordaining women to the diaconate. In fact, the 1976 CDF document deliberately passed over the issue, saying "it is a question which must be taken up fully by direct study of the texts, without preconceived ideas." Since then, the Vatican commissioned a group of theol …

The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (a Washington, D.C. based orga …

An article in the Times Online reports that a group of deputies to the Church of England's General Synod and one of her bishops has written in public support of the episcopal ordinations of American clergy taking place this week in Kenya and this weekend in Uganda: "The Bishop of Rochester, Dr Michael Nazir-Ali, headed a list of more than 30 members of the Church of England's General Synod who sent a message to the two new bishops backing their episcopal ministry, even though acknowledging it is …

2007-08-31 13:30  Labor Day Weekend Festivals
Fiesta Hermosa This weekend Hermosa Beach will once again host it's 3-day arts festival formerly known as Fiesta del Artes. It's going to be a hot one, so the cool breezes will make this festival the place to be. The arts and crafts on sale are irresistable, so bring money. The food vendors are not that impressive; I prefer the local restaurants, and the beer garden really gets out of control. That can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending. Sat, Sun Mon, Sept 1-3, 2007, 10 am - 6 pm Hermosa …

2007-08-30 18:31  Nice trip report, featuring Ligurians, pyramid hunts and an impromptu shul crawl
In case anyone was wondering if I've dropped off LJ, I'm now back, from having gone to Nice for a cousin's wedding, then after just long enough a gap I couldn't roll them into one big holiday Amsterdam for ploni_bat_ploni 's wedding. Neither my cousin nor his bride lived in Nice; they just wanted to get married there. The term, I am told, for this kind of thing is "stag-flation". (Do I need to explain the joke in that) Here's a piccy of me at the wedding. As flying is the worst thing most wester …

2007-08-29 20:16  What Does It Mean to Have Communion with God
I am sure that the title of this post seems obvious and as though I had pulled a question out of a catechism. And yet, my experience tells me that things that seem as though they ought to be obvious often are not, particularly the more basic and fundamental they are in our life as Orthodox believers. In an earlier post I noted that the world fellowship is often found in English Bibles as a mistranslation of the Greek word koinonia, the result being that frequently when Scripture is giving us inf …

2007-08-28 20:12  Greek Fires - Update
I heard good news this afternoon about my family in Greece. The village where my grandfather was born and where I still have second cousins living, Vounargo (Βούναργο), is not burned. The area all around it appears to be destroyed and the fires are still burning, but for now it's OK. My family from my grandmother's side in Zacharo (Ζαχάρω)and Kalidona (Kαλίδονα)is all OK and have now made it out to Athens. Their houses are destroyed and had no where else to go sinceit …

2007-08-28 19:00  The Most Forgotten Command by Pastors Today:...preach the Word!
The single greatest message I have ever heard or read on 2 Tim. 4:1-5 is by John MacArthur. This is what sets John apart from the rest of the pack in evangelicalism today who are mostly consumed by the expedient syncretistic moorings of their own imaginings; baptized in the postmodern ecumencial egalitarianism of pragmatism that is more concerned about being "liked" rather than being concerned for the truth. John's undying dedication and preaching of God's Word for close to four decades now is a …

2007-08-28 13:42  Augustine of Hippo
Bishop and Theologian Aurelius Augustinus, Augustine of Hippo, or Saint Augustine (November 13, 354 August 28, 430) was one of the most important figures in the development of Western Christianity, there considered to be one of the church fathers. He framed the concepts of original sin and just war. In Roman Catholicism and the Anglican Communion, he is a saint and pre-eminent Doctor of the Church, and the patron of the Augustinian religious order. Many Protestants, especially Calvinists, consid …

28 August AD 430 Saint Augustine was one of the greatest of the Latin church fathers and was among the most significant influences in the formation of Western Christianity, including Lutheranism. He was born to Monica and Patricius, a Christian mother and a pagan father, in AD 354 in Tagaste, Numidia (now Souk Ahras in Algeria). Augustine's early life was distinguished by exceptional advancement as a teacher of rhetoric. He described his life before his conversion to Christianity in his book Con …

What was very interesting to me, not one Roman Catholic at Jimmy Akin's blog could, would, or did give one Scriptural reference to either support her words or deny them (examples below). N …

Thanks to Heather's Poor Excuse for bringing our attention to this wonderful article by a Christian Orthodox priest. The hubby and I were members of a Greek Orthodox Church when we lived in Colorado and I've never since felt as close to God as I did then. The Orthodox worship that we participated in weekly and sometimes twice weekly is how I envision worship in Heaven, if you were to take it literally. There was such a sense of humility and awe in the liturgy, coming face to face with the Holy t …
