2007-10-26 20:56 Facebooks hyperambitiösa planer. Riskkapitalet förändras i Silicon Valley

2007-09-25 06:00 Microsoft Considering a Stake in Facebook and David Sze
I am sure you have read that the new price tag for Facebook may be as high as $13B. The New York Times start their story with a comment on Mark Zuckerberg: Microsoft Is Said to Consider a Stake in Facebook - New York Times SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 24 Some people laughed at Mark E. Zuckerberg when he reportedly turned down a $900 million offer last year for Facebook, the social networking Web site he founded three and a half years ago.... I personally think the real genious here is David Sze from Gre …

2007-08-27 14:12 'Founders at Work: Stories of Startups' Early Days'
Just finished reading Jessica Livingston's 'Founders at Work' over the weekend. It's a compilation of interviews with enterpreneurs -- many of them from the Boston area. So few books are published that deal with building companies here...and Jessica gets into the nitty-gritty: relationships with co-founders, negotiations with VCs, competing with bigger players. The Boston entrepreneurs interviewed in the book include: - Dan Bricklin, Software Arts (VisiCalc spreadsheet) - Mitchell Kapor, Lotus D …

2007-08-16 20:51 Online gaming boom fuels VC investment
If you think video games are just for kids, think again. Thirty-four percent of U.S. adult Internet users play online games on a weekly basis, according to Casual Gaming Market Update, a new report from market research firm Parks Associates. This number compares with 29% who watch short online videos and 19% who visit social networking sites with the same frequency. Analyst James Kuai says that casual gaming "has more mature and heterogenous revenue models," such as Web-based and in-game adverti …

2007-08-16 15:46 The Race to Become the YouTube of Online Video Games (Kongregate Vs. YoYo Games)
The culture of participation is gaining steam in the gaming arena. Kongregate, a site that lets users upload their own simple Flash video games, announced today that it raised $5 million in a venture round led by Greylock Partners. Web 2.0 angel Jeff Clavier is already an investor . These tend to be simple games, but the site seems to be gaining some traction, with 750 developers having uploaded 1391 games since the site's public launch last March. That in turn is driving some gains in traff …

Kongregate, a gaming Web site that targets young men and woos game developers with incentives, has raised over $5 million to support its growth. It lets developers compete to create games, and rewards the best of them. The San Francisco-based company launched publicly in March ( our coverage ), and has grown since then to include nearly 1,500 games from 750 independent game developers. It is nearing a million unique visitors per month, 85 percent of whom are male, and mostly in their early twent …

2007-08-16 04:01 Kongregate scores $5 million in venture capital for user-generated games
You read about these guys here on our blog first. Kongregate has raised $5 million in venture money from Greylock Partners and other financiers. Their goal is to create the "YouTube of games" with a video game web site that offers user-created games. It's not such a crazy idea. Microsoft is promoting the same concept with its XNA tools [...]

Hailed by Khosla Ventures' David Weiden as a "big, cool, exciting idea", Startforce was the most praised startup at web services CEO showcase at the AlwaysOn Stanford Summit this morning. The pre-series A company has developed a web operating system providing a web desktop service for click-and-run web applications. Vesbridge's Rod Randall described Startforce as "hugely disruptive", while VantagePoint Venture Partners' David Carlick described the product as "brilliant." Enterprise social media …

2007-07-20 10:40 Podcast About Proto.in, Which Starts Tomorrow
OK, the D-day is here. After four months of planning and organizing, the event unfolds tomorrow at IIT Madras. It's grown bigger since its first edition in Jan and organizing it hasn't been easy. I'm continued to be impressed with the amazing spirit of my team mates at The Knowledge Foundation. There are no monetary benefits (no one makes a single rupee) as its a non-profit organization. In spite of it, folks have put in their heart into this event knowing that they are making a difference to th …

2007-07-17 22:27 Music Nation digs new bands
In the traditional music biz of yesteryear, the executives responsible for A&R, or artists and repertoire, spent a lot of time trolling for new talent in clubs and bars. Today, no surprise, they're hanging out online and taking advantage of social-networking technologies such as video sharing to enlist fans to help them choose which musicians to develop. Borrowing a concept from TV's immensely popular "American Idol" and adding a hip, digital edge, Music Nation invites visitors to vote on home-s …

2007-07-12 05:24 Why Facebook's VCs will Fund Facebook App Developers
Less than 48 hours ago, I laughed-out-loud when I read that Bay Partners would be setting up a separate fund to invest in Facebook Application Developments (which incidentally spells fad, but that's really just a coincidence). Don't get me wrong, I am extremely bullish on Facebook ( Facebook 100M users, a matter of when, not if ) and if I were a part of the company I could envision a dozen ways to create an Ad Sense-esque revenue stream... but the fact remains, Facebook Apps is no brass ring fo …

2007-07-12 02:02 Facebook VC: We re Investing in Facebook Apps Too
For Facebook application developers, not all VCs are created equal...at least when it comes to the support they can lend your company if they also happen to, say, sit on the board of Facebook itself. That's the position Jim Breyer, David Sze, and Paul Madera find themselves in as they size up pitches from application developers for Accel, Greylock, and Meritech Capital, respectively. Not only do they have the inside track on spotting up and coming applications, but they also have the power to ma …

After a few months in the shadows, Bay Partners has decided to publicize its seed fund investment activities and focus its sub-$250,000 investments on companies that have developed applications for Facebook's platform. This means any startup that has integrated its own web service or a related service into the Facebook web site in order to make it available to Facebook's 27 millions users.
