2007-11-05 21:07 The Iraq war has become a disaster that we have chosen to forget
By Madeleine Bunting (THE GUARDIAN, 05/11/07): "You think you are innocent, but you're not," said the British Muslim suicide bomber in the Channel 4 television drama Britz last week. As the compelling actor Manjinder Virk recited her suicide statement to camera, she went on: thousands of women and children are dying every day in Iraq and Afghanistan, and yet the governments responsible have been returned to power. Her assertion sticks in the mind because it goes straight to the heart of how we ch …

2007-11-03 11:41 Winter Is Here
The seasons pass without us being able to affect them at all. Spring is a very brief affair up in the northerner parts of Sweden, it's usually taken care of in about a month or so - from start to finish. The first tinglings usually show up here in Umeå around the end of April, and by the end of May it's full summer. I personally don't like the first part, the slush and mush that covers everything as the snow melts more quickly than it can be dissipated. But I do love the other half of it, the dr …

2007-10-25 20:18 ˜Taleban with nukes No, but time is running out
By Bronwen Maddox (THE TIMES, 25/10/07): This has been a shatteringly bleak week for Pakistan, but not one that condemns it to being a failed state. The return of Benazir Bhutto, overshadowed by the bomb that killed 140, is a step forward. But although she has been championed in Europe and the US, she is a long way from being the solution to her country s savage problems. Pakistan dominates Britain s foreign worries, officials say, and they are right. It is not just that terrorism is on the incr …

2007-10-20 17:12 What is Storm Surge and How Will It Affect My Home in Florida
Another article in the œFloods and Flood Insurance Series Storm surge is a threat to any coastal areas, which are often less than 10 feet above sea level. The œsurge is water that is pushed ashore by the force of a storm. The combination of a tropical storm or a hurricane, along with high tides, can bring a wall of water up to 20 feet high. In Tampa, the South Tampa peninsula, surrounded by Hillsborough Bay and Tampa Bay, has flooded in low-lying areas during recent Flooded_homesTropical Sto …

2007-10-19 17:57 Abdullah as Engine of Saudi Reform
I'm now in Jeddah, eager to attend the groundbreaking for the King Abdullah University of Science & Technology, to be held Sunday. The university is noted in the following piece which I somehow missed in the on-line-only content of the Summer issue of 'Foreign Policy' magazine. The writers are both experts on the Gulf. What they found during their most recent trip challenges the stereotypes most Americans have of the Kingdom. Reform is both happening in the country and may not be able to be sust …

2007-10-17 20:26 Hahahahaha
The world is most certainly small, but there are limits to how the past can come up sometimes. I am sitting in my PJs and my jaw has just dropped. Ah good deportation days in the bleak winter of 1999. There were three of us in a loft in Soho in NY. Matt was a drug addict who insisted that he suffered from Gulf War Syndrome even though he had never BEEN to the gulf. Then there was Catherine impossibly young but oh so self assured. She was rarely around, but she had the cutest lap dog that I often …

2007-10-17 12:40 Saudi Debate on 'Chaotic Guidance'
Last week, I noted that the Saudi ulema had launched a website intended to put legitimate fatawas in one place that would also provide a portal for Muslims to request rulings on issues of individual concern. This article from Saudi Debate points to the weaknesses that make such a website desirable. Worth reading. Saudi ˜suicide youths suffer from the œchaos of official interpretations Abdulaziz Al-Khedr Some weeks ago the Saudi Jihadis in the Palestinian Nahr al-Bared refugee camp in northern …

2007-10-17 11:36 Earthquake and tsunami off Sumatra
There's been another big earthquake off the coast of Sumatra (Indonesia) of somewhere in the 7.9 to 8.2 range. The latest advisory has a warning for a wave to hit Phukket at 13.08 GMT (just after 10pm Thai time and another couple of hours away as I write this). We've made sure that everybody we know who might be in the area is aware of it. Given the location of the quake it seems unlikely that the waves hitting Thailand (if any) will be as bad as from the last one, but I don't suppose anybody re …

2007-10-16 21:59 Patriot Missiles So Bored They're Firing Themselves
The utter lack of action has left the multi-million dollar defense missiles so bored, they are launching themselves at nothing. Al-Jazeera reported that a U.S. base in Qatar "accidentally" fired a Patriot missile at a farm in the Gulf Arab state. The U.S. military is investigating the missile launch, though they are claiming it was an "accident." This is just a cover-up. Patriot Missiles, which were ineffective in the last Gulf War, were just dying to redeem themselves with this new war. What th …

2007-10-16 15:00 What s so funny about peace, love and responsibility
American efforts to bridge the gaps between Israel and the Palestinians to culminate in a summit at the end of November are being met by skepticism in the Arab and Muslim worlds according to Jeffrey Fleishman of the LA Times. Posturing and recrimination often characterize such negotiations, but Arab nations, including Washington's closest allies, are criticizing the November conference as a miscalculated photo op by a Bush administration desperate to repair its image in the Middle East. "This is …

2007-10-16 07:59 Petrol stations ban credit cards is surcharging the only viable solution
According to this article by the Gulf News in Dubai, fees for accepting credit card payments œincreased about a year ago for petrol stations from 1.35 per cent to 1.4 per cent for each transaction and petrol stations were fine with it for a year. It was recently increased again by 0.2 per cent to 1.65 per cent. And that s the proverbial straw that broke the camel s back. Petrol stations across the Emirates suddenly decided to no longer accept credit cards. Terminals will soon be removed while …

Interesting piece in Financial Times on how the film 'The Kingdom' is being received by audiences in the United Arab Emirates. 2007-10-15 14:35 Palestine, apartheid and colonialism.
Jimmy Carter says so. Desmond Tutu says so. Nelson Mandela says so. Israel is imposing apartheid on the Palestinian people. Such a claim brings the usual rushed denunciations from people who know perfectly well the strengths of the comparison. All comparisons contain limits: for example, it is reasonably well known by now that the Palestinians do not fulfil the same function in relation to the Israeli economy as black South Africans fulfilled in relation to the Afrikaaner economy. Tony Cliff dre …

I met my new best friend today. I can't tell you his name, for security reasons, but we'll call him Aaron. I forgot what it's like to be brand new in this theater. His group arrived this morning and we stopped by to visit this afternoon. I spent about an hour with them answering some basic questions - basic to us, we've been here for ten months - quite important to them. I'd really rather think about a Rockies, Sox World Series blastfest, but instead we have this kind of stuff. Other nations must hold us in the most abject derisive contempt imaginable. The Turks, a democracy refuse us in the national assemble elected by the people, and a NATO ally the ability to ship our own men across their territory in the military effort against Iraq. The 4th Division never makes it as a result, and no military move from the north occurs. We go, 'well you're a representative …
