2007-11-06 12:50  Blue Plate Special
It was another one of those Uni Watch red-alert moments last night, as about a dozen readers e-mailed me all at once and another half-dozen or so posted all at once in the comments section. The cause Jason Strudwick of the Rangers got in a fight and his nameplate came loose during the fisticuffs, revealing some nasty-looking adhesive residue on the underside. All of which is very entertaining. But here's my question: Since when have the Rangers been using nameplates I always thought they used di …

2007-09-02 14:42  Artist Willard Wigan - Dreams DO Come True
Back in April this year, it was suggested that artist Willard Wigan may retire when we first brought his story to you. However, the case for this mind-blowing, little-known micro sculptor is the furthest thing from that today. Willard Wigan s success has become larger-than-life. Merely 6 weeks ago, Willard received his MBE for services to art at Buckingham Palace, where the Prince of Wales told Willard that his work was 'phenomenal' - "same day as Rod Stewart was there." he says proudly. "Meetin …

2007-08-13 15:37  Allan Guthrie on Noir
When TBP played in Scotland a couple of weeks ago, I got to sit down with Allan Guthrie and talk books.  He also gave me a copy of his first novel, Two-Way Split, which was the only one I hadn't read.  I rectified this oversight on the plane ride home, and it proved to be just as good as the rest of his output.  (It has also just won a major prize .)  For those who want to be up on their 21-century noir, reading Guthrie is essential.  My review of his latest, Hard Man, is here. --- AG:   1929 wa …

I thought I'd share this poster of African leaders circa 1999 which has been lying around my study for just such an occasion actually, I was cleaning things and stumbled upon it... I've been mulling a piece on Africa in 1989 to give some depth to my ongoing series and trying without success to find the equivalent poster from that year - the high mark of rogues in Africa, hence I'll start with a request: does anyone have any similar photos from 1989 Photos of any OAU meeting would work for my pur …

2007-08-03 23:44  Slowly derailing high speed rail
By Steven T. Jones Our political leaders in Sacramento apparently still can't muster the courage to create a high-speed rail system for California, which is perhaps the single most important public works project for addressing climate change and the hopelessly congested freeways and airports we'll otherwise see in coming decades. After a tentative agreement two months ago to give the California High-Speed Rail Authority less than half of the $103 million it needs to move the project forward (whi …

The sunset on Thursday night was stunning. It went on for about an hour. I'm glad I was in the area with my camera. On Friday I was out at the Bold Street Project's Flickr group meetup. It was a great night out, chatting and touring some of the spots in Liverpool. Its the first time I'd seen the exhibition at FACT by Michelle Wren and it was fantastic. Very impressive. We moved on to the Open Eye gallery for the medical photos exhibition, which I've seen before and still creeps me out. Afterward …

More history followed with guided tours of the E. Chambre Hardman house and photographic studio on Rodney Street. On a very rainy day we were pleased with the turnout - I think around 15 of us did the …

2007-06-29 21:51  Shapes I like to use
Carol of A Stitch in Time asked this question today. "Do you have a symbol or design that crops up regularly in your work" It made me think about the shapes that crop up fairly regularly in my work and I went to have a look in some of my old sketchbooks. I do like curvy shapes and like to draw an amoeba like shape which is quick and easy. A flower shape which is also quick and easy and the wavy shapes which I have loved since City and Guilds days. (Those of a gentle or squeamish disposition are warned that what follows is not a pretty story nor sight) I now have a mark on the top of my head similar to the one Harry Potter has on his forehead. But I ignored the sensation and soon the endorphins were kicking in as I did battle with the Parisian traffic and I forgot …
