2007-11-05 21:07 The Iraq war has become a disaster that we have chosen to forget
By Madeleine Bunting (THE GUARDIAN, 05/11/07): "You think you are innocent, but you're not," said the British Muslim suicide bomber in the Channel 4 television drama Britz last week. As the compelling actor Manjinder Virk recited her suicide statement to camera, she went on: thousands of women and children are dying every day in Iraq and Afghanistan, and yet the governments responsible have been returned to power. Her assertion sticks in the mind because it goes straight to the heart of how we ch …

2007-11-04 16:39 This Is Going to Hurt
By Mark Essig, the business editor for The Asheville (N.C.) Citizen-Times and the author of Edison and the Electric Chair (THE NEW YORK TIMES, 04/11/07): When the Supreme Court last week granted a stay of execution for a murderer in Mississippi, it imposed a de facto moratorium on capital punishment in the United States. With prosecutors in Texas and other states now saying they will stop seeking execution dates, that moratorium is likely to last at least until the court issues a ruling on an …

2007-10-21 18:42 Feminism and Islam in Iran
Note: this article appeared in Gendering the Middle East, Deniz Kandiyoti (Editor), Pbulisher: I.B. Tauris, 1996 Feminism(s)1 in the Middle East and their articulations with Islam have attracted substantial interest in recent years. This chapter will focus on the interaction between feminism and Islam in Iran. It will trace, in general terms, the development of feminism in that country and the ways in which it has interacted with Islam at various historical moments since the turn of the century …

2007-10-21 06:39 Tales from Cuddleplush, Part 6: The End
My webstore never did recover from its search engine massacre of 2001. By then, I had run out of startup money and bought a house, so I didn't have any more funds to subsidize it. The business had to live or die based on its sales alone, and the sales simply weren't there. Finally, after a truly dismal Christmas 2003, I had to accept the fact that this was never going to provide a real living for me. This realization broke my heart, but I had no choice. I had to close the store. So I spent prett …

2007-10-16 18:03 Dealing with a hard decision
We spent the night Sunday night at the Emergency Vets with our 8 year old male poodle pup. $200 and many hours later, it was determined that he has a kidney stone. He stayed overnight and we picked him up early Monday morning and took him to our regular vet. Several X-rays, hours later, and $100 more, he still has a kidney stone that has not budged. The vet wanted to wait it out and hope he could pass it. He said surgery was the last option because the dog already had congestive heart failure an …

2007-10-15 16:20 Lyndon Lamborn--In His Own Words
In following up on the story about the excommunication of Mesa, Arizona church member Lyndon Lamborn, I emailed Lyndon asking for more details about the circumstances surrounding his excommunication. He kindly responded and, with his permission, I post his response here. The words are entirely his (with a few minor editorial revisions to clean up typos or protect the identity of those whose permission for revealing their identity I did not obtain). Some of his words are stronger than what I woul …

2007-10-15 12:57 Go Pack
I was on call this past weekend, and had the occasion to visit a nice elderly lady who was in the hospital suffering from, amongst other things, dementia, heart failure, urosepsis and generalized weakness. While she had just the day before complained about all of these maladies, on Sunday I walked in to her room, and when I asked her how she was doing, she barked: "GO PACK!" For a brief moment I thought this meant that she was feeling so much better that she was ready to be discharged. That was …

2007-10-15 10:23 The de-moralisation of health care
Daily Mail, 15 October 2007 How in God's name have we come to this In three hospitals in Kent, at least 90 patients have died from a superbug infection caused by filthy conditions with unwashed bedpans, staff 'too busy' to clean their hands and - most appalling of all - nurses telling patients with diarrhoea to 'go in their beds'. This unspeakable situation reveals not just callousness towards suffering and indifference to human dignity but a breakdown of some of our most basic civilised values. …

2007-10-14 12:47 What's Going On
OK. It's time to talk of many things: Of shoes and ships and sealing wax and cabbages and kings and why Diana is in such a distracted state and whether pigs have wings.... It's been a hell of a less-than-two-months, my dearest darlings. Some of you know some of this. Some of you know most of this but not all of it, as the last bit we just found out, so there's something for everyone. I needed time to see how things would sort out and get my head around all the life changing ramifications of What …

2007-10-12 12:21 Lady Jaye Breyer P-Orridge of Psychic TV, RIP
Lady Jaye Breyer P-Orridge, wife of industrial music pioneer Genesis P-Orridge and member of Psychic TV, died of heart failure on Tuesday. Lady Jaye and Genesis were in the midst of an ongoing life-art project to make them look more alike through matching breast implants, haircuts, and other body modifications. The aim was to merge their identities into a single "pandrogynous" being, named Breyer P-Orridge. We send our condolences to Gen and the extended Psychic TV family. Link

That alignment of individuals is the blue and white collar workers on the one hand, and affluent professionals and their spouses on the other. The former make up the seats that provides the Coal …

2007-10-11 17:15 Put Your Heart At Ease With The Third Wave
You see, articles such as the one in the Wall Street Journal reviewing the heart unhealthy aspects of job strain makes me wonder about those people who believe that work/life blending or balancing is not so terribly important. A study by Canadian researchers suggests workplace stress may be as hazardous to your heart health as smoking, high cholesterol and other conventional risk factors for cardiovascular disease. A majority of those who suffer heart attacks during their working years return to …

Today....I'm Thankful for this Story, and I pray it blesses your heart....as it did mine. Thanks to a special friend for sharing this with me. It truly made my day. A Chinese woman had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole, which she carried across her neck. One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water, at the end of the long walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full. For two years this we …

2007-10-10 21:15 The Death of Socialized Medicine
Peter W. Huber has written an insightful and compelling explanation of how science is killing socialized medicine, no matter what our politicians may be saying now. But we re now past the days when infectious diseases were the dominant killers, and heart attacks and lung cancer seemed to strike as randomly as germs. And insurance looks altogether different when your neighbor s problem is a persistent failure to take care of himself. Many people willing to share the burden of bad luck eventually …

In a follow-up to my previous discussion ( part I, part II, part III ), regarding the August 6th court decision which said that terminally ill patients do NOT have the right to access experimental treatments, I was able to attend a policy seminar at the Cato Institute in which panelists Michael Cannon (of Cato), Scott Ballenger (lawyer for the Abigail Alliance who argued the case for the terminally ill), and Ezekiel Emmanuel (bioethicist at NIH who agreed with the court decision) battled it out …

2007-10-10 08:29 China Air Safety: Damn Good
Excellent article in the Wall Street Journal on a topic near and dear to my heart: air safety. The article is entitled " How China Turned Around A Dismal Air-Safety Record Foreign Help Combined With Willful Regulator " and it discusses how China's air safety (which I knew to be good) has risen to the level of great. Interestingly, the article also talks about how China's action on air safety might be applied similarly to the product safety. For much of the 1990s, Chinese air safety was "arguably …

2007-10-09 18:40 The Belgian Conundrum
Ages ago - light years in blog terms in fact - Megan noticed The Economist pointing out that the euro has lessened the pressure that Belgian politicians might otherwise face to settle their differences and observes :Now that the European Union has taken over the currency, as well as many of the trade and customs functions of traditional federal governments, Belgium as a state suddenly looks a lot less necessary. One wonders if the current era of economic integration (assuming it continues) might …

2007-10-08 20:41 Incompetence on Stilts
Robert has finally d ecided to reply .Gene you present some real lack of awareness concerning libertarian conceptions of free will in your post. You said: Really, so God can do evil. God having "libertarian" freedom does not mean He can do good and evil. Libertarian freedom in humans, by definition, requires they can do both good and evil. God can do whatever He wants to do. He does not do evil however, He may have various choices available to Himself, all of which are good choices, He then c …
