2007-11-06 12:50 Blue Plate Special
It was another one of those Uni Watch red-alert moments last night, as about a dozen readers e-mailed me all at once and another half-dozen or so posted all at once in the comments section. The cause Jason Strudwick of the Rangers got in a fight and his nameplate came loose during the fisticuffs, revealing some nasty-looking adhesive residue on the underside. All of which is very entertaining. But here's my question: Since when have the Rangers been using nameplates I always thought they used di …

2007-10-09 16:34 Out of Brown Yarn
Amount woven yesterday: 5" Final length: 3 yards + 32.5" And being out of brown yarn means I am done weaving the basic yardage. I was surprised how long the brown lasted. I actually got fairly close to my original intention of 4.1 yards. Now I can move on to weaving what I am going to call the trim. My plan is to use this trim for border/edging, either at the hems of the jacket and sleeves or along the front, or maybe both. So I want something a bit different, but something that will still fit i …

2007-09-21 06:07 Kristi's Color meme
Kristi would like to have knitters answer these questions for some research she is doing. I first saw this meme on on Liz's Page, A Stitch in Time. The questions are interesting and anytime there's something to think about regarding colors it's a good thing. An escape hatch into a different world. Color is one of the best things in life, and mostly, it's free. ;-) I've copied her intro, and the meme. If you would like to do the meme, I'm sure she would love to have your input. She suggests leavi …

2007-09-18 00:35 OM Meet - Brecon Beacons
Last month I had to miss out on the opportunity to walk and wildcamp with the Outdoor Bloggers in the Brecon Beacons. The other bloggers had a great time and I was convinced that I was going to have to leave the area alone until next year. Well, thanks to the efforts of OM's Metric Kate, I got another chance to go at the weekend, and I'm happy to report that we had a great time. Old friends were reunited, new friendships were made, bizarre events ensued. Top stuff, as always! The first pair to s …

Title: "Brotherly Talk" Author: Lazra Rating: PG Warnings: can't think of any Word count: 1,470 Prompt: #7. Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, Loz/Yazoo: skinny dipping - "Come in, the water's warm." A/N: Done for KinkFest. I tried for smut, I really did, but I only managed pointless brotherly fluff. 2007-09-10 19:16 Sensible stripes cardigan
Here I am in disguise as a grown-up! This is so fresh off the needles that it still doesn't have any buttons (it might get some wooden toggles, given that the buttonholes I made might turn out not to be very big- but suggestions are very welcome!) It's a basic top down raglan, made using the trusty calculator. I knit it out of Blue Sky Alpacas delicious organic cotton, in bone and nut. The colours aren't dyed at all, the cotton just grows that way! Very pleasing (and very, very soft) I shaped th …

Lela Rose: Ready to Wear Fashion Show Spring/Summer 2008 Click here to watch the Lela Rose Spring/Summer 2008 Collection fashion show. Style.com Review: NEW YORK, September 6, 2007 "Katharine Hepburn meets Audrey Hepburn," is how Rose described her Spring look. What, exactly, does that mean A new sportiness, for starters. The show's standout piece was a bottle-green belted taffeta anorak coat-dress hardly a new concept, but one that added a peppy zip to the other, more elegant, fare. The same si …

2007-09-05 00:00 A Day by the Lake
I like this long-weekend stuff. Spend a day by a lake, watch the kids swim, eat lunch, drink beer and make socks. Put socks on. Enjoy the perky picot hems and the almost perfect short row heels (me and short row heels are an emerging relationship. I like the fit, I still don't have picking up the wraps down pat). Cavort with nature: Yarn is Vesper Sock in a colour I can't remember. I believe Watermelon Stripe, but I could be completely wrong. The yarn was from a trade with Anmyriam and it's …

2007-09-04 23:12 Fall Fashion
I figured it all out yesterday so you don't have to. Ladies, the fall trends are tweed, deep purples and other jewel tones like turquoise, Flouncy or "bubble" sleeves and hems, and stiletto heels. Oh, and empire waist or turban-cut sweaters and hippie-cut turban-esque brightly colored dresses. And really, all of the dresses are incredibly short. I guess Britney was onto something there. Unfortunately for me, other than the purple I pretty much hate all of it. Tweed is ugly and boring, and I can' …

there were a few things i was going to do this afternoon, all of which involved leaving the house. alas, my plans were foiled... ...by the fact that when i went to go out & do said things, i discovered i was locked inside my house. yes, that's right - somehow, i've locked myself in. i'm not entirely sure how this happened. the locks were fine when i went out this morning with the dog, and fine when i came back. then i locked the door behind me, did a few things in the house, and when i went to u …

2007-09-01 23:34 Saturday morning quickie
Last weekend weekend I cleaned out my fabric stash, having had a large attack of guilt over its size and my addiction to purchasing fabric. Crumpled up in the corner was this shirt I got it when I was 14, from Katie's, to wear to Tracey Davis's birthday party. Back then it was enormous on me and had shoulder pads. A few years after that I took the shoulder pads out and wore it with the sleeves rolled up over army pants and singlets. A few years ago I made a really poor attempt at making it le …

OK. In order to understand the way I did the math for the Butterfly blouse, you need to understand two things. One, I hate math. And two, when confronted with tasks I hate, I become a lazy, lazy girl. But knitting, I like. So I started the Butterfly process by knitting the first ball of yarn in its entirety. The yarn, by the way, is Wick from Knit One, Crochet Too. They do that cutesy marketing thing where they call rayon "soy," but we all know better, and so we'll just call this one a rayon/pol …

2007-08-27 16:57 microburst
Yesterday evening we had a microburst. The hard winds shook up the dogs, and shook down the garden. Fortunately I had just picked these daylily seeds else they would have been strewn in the garden. From the safety of my study window I watched the young Newport plum shake. I was afraid it would go down to the ground. I unstaked this tree a few months ago and I see it needs to be re-staked. Look how the trunk (which is about a foot in diameter now) is now tilted towards the house. I am beginning t …

Good morning, everyone! I m Hardin, and I ll be your host for this installment of Memory Monday. Cherrie had a very challenging weekend, trying to get her end of the upcoming play in shape, and we re giving her the day off. Toward the end of my high school term, I was romantically interested in several of my female classmates. Romantically, as in I wanted to have sex with them. I asked one of them to be my senior prom date. She had given me all the right signals before, leaving me notes about ho …

Like most Midwestern towns full of geriatrics, the major field of employment in Duluth is medicine. And as such, you constantly see doctors and nurses on the streets, in the stores, and everywhere else around here. The following is a list of gross things I've seen people doing in their scrubs. - Drinking and smoking in dive bars. Seriously, nothing instills confidence in the medical industry more than the sight of a plastered nurse stumbling out of the women's toilets at the Round-Up and blazing …

2007-08-24 14:11 Happy Friday
It's Friday, already Where did the week go I spent some time with my fabric for the Built by Wendy tunic yesterday - I'm officially blind. The stripe on the material is small enough that it sort of hurts your eyes when you look at it too long.... I'm hoping that the shirt has enough white to break it up so it's not a top that people have to look away from for fear of losing their sight. I should have enough time today to get this top finished, or at least everything but the hems. By the way, I s …

2007-08-23 14:28 The pretty pear in 2007
The pear shape is the most represented female body type, so it's no surprise that " The pretty pear " is still one of the most popular posts on youlookfab. Originally posted more than a year ago, however, the guidelines are due for an update. The key is still balancing the difference between the top and bottom part of your body. We can achieve this by drawing attention upward, de-emphasizing the bottom part of your body and elongating your legs. Drawing attention upwards : Wear the best possible …

2007-08-21 15:32 Alterations: the path to perfect fit
While it might seem odd to buy clothing to have altered, it s a good idea. People who have perfectly fitting clothing do not necessarily have perfect bodies. They have competent tailors. I have most of my pants altered at the waist because it s virtually impossible to get a waistband to fit when you have a slight sway back. Some alterations are absolutely worth the expense while others are not. Before you purchase a garment that doesn t fit perfectly, be sure to weigh up the cost of the alterati …

Over the weekend I spent sometime working on the new blog the Valentine Cookbook Blog and, as I was entering the recipes that have been made thousands of times by women in my family, I realized that the three primary ingredients in most of them are things I no longer eat shortening, white flour, and sugar. It s kind of amazing really. All the things I loved as a child and have made many, many times as an adult, are now no longer part of my life. Great Aunt Mary s keuchels, Gram s mincemeat tarts …

I have really good legs. I tell you this so that when I tell you I had great legs in the ˜70s you will see the continuity. During the seventies I wore the mini-skirt, I mean I really wore it short to my knickers wore it. I had to learn to do the Bunny-dip in order to pick things up from the floor short. * the Bunny-dip: a specialized move perfected by the Playboy Bunnies in the seventies to accommodate the rather low cut top when they needed to serve drinks, a move to prevent matters from fallin …
