2007-08-25 13:53 Assessing Credibility
When working through employee conduct issues, do you frequently find that you have all the information you need, a solid evidence file, and maybe even a flat out "Law and Order" confession More realistically, how many times do you end up with a "he said, she said" type of a situation How many times do you get questionable information, are unable to get any further clarification and find yourself stuck between words on a paper and an employee's verbal explanation As life would have it, all of the …

2007-08-21 00:00 Harry Potter and the Funnybook Frontier
Ain't nothing like trying to jump on the bandwagon after the train's left the station. Or something. I was talking yesterday with Joe Gulick (the A-J's assistant editor and a big comics fan) about the Harry Potter novels and movies. I'm not a big fan of them -- I've read the first couple of books and saw the first movie, and they just didn't light my fire. But Joe wondered why the Harry Potter books have never been adapted for comics. Good question. Comics adapting movies are a time-honored trad …

2007-08-20 18:54 I seen a horse fly! I seen a house fly!
Had a conversation with gehayi today and I asked her: "If Voldemort can fly and Snape can fly, why on earth can't Dumbledore Or the Order And she said that it was because they weren't evil. This led to silliness. When I see a good wizard fly (sung by Lucius) to the tune of "When I see an elephant fly" from Dumbo Lucius: I ve seen a Quidditch Stand Helped a Master Plan Saw a tee-shirt that dyed its tie But I think I will have seen everything, When I see a good wizard fly. 2007-08-17 05:16 The Deathly Hallows and the Harry Potter Series
Below is an entry on DH I posted to my journal before the entry I posted here to whileaway dealing with race, gender and sexuality in the whole series, and ide_cyan suggested I post it here now. This is going to be a post about the things I really loved about the final book and the series, with some critique as well. What I loved the most about the final book was what we learned about Dumbledore and the depth of his story, and how that is more the finale than Harry offing Voldemort. We're presen …

2007-08-10 23:51 get away from my godson
I'm wearing sweatpants and thick socks and I'm still kind of cold. It's August, and I don't have the AC on, it's just chilly out. What the hell, weather god, what the hell Saw movie!OotP in IMAX again with my dad. It was so much better than the first time cause we got seats in the topmost row and I didn't spend the entire movie craning my neck to and fro. I love that movie so much. I couldn't help smiling when they flew over London because the IMAX screen is so orgasmically huge. I was smiling r …

Scalzi writes: Whatever : All that said, if you are a fan of Neil Gaiman's and you want to see him continue to work in Hollywood and whatnot, then you really ought not be complacent, and you really ought to see Stardust on opening weekend, and preferably on Friday. The mechanics of the movie business are structured these days so that those opening numbers matter a great deal. The movie business is not like it was 20 years ago, when Princess Bride opened up in just 600 theaters; it's not even lik …

2007-08-07 15:03 What to do with your friends on Friday. Also Chocolate Eggs.
Neil, Hi, I'm really looking forward to seeing Stardust. However, I'm considering bringing my six year old daughter but I'm not sure if she's old enough. Would you advise against this Being a young girl, she loves all things fairy, and I think she'd like it. At least the parts where there aren't flying pirates, I think. She's seen the Princess Bride, and I know you've made that comparison before. I know the movie's rated PG-13, but so was the Simpsons movie and she didn't seem to be emotionally …

2007-08-07 04:08 Stardust [2007]
Weeks and weeks into this Summer of Disappointing Movies, we have finally unearthed a decent gem of a film. This is the one you take a date to; especially if your significant other wears an ankh or has a Death (the D.C. comic character) tattoo somewhere or owns all the Sandman graphic novels. Paramount Pictures has graciously brought the fairy tale back to the screen, with a quality not seen since The Princess Bride . Forget Narnia, Terabithia, and Hogwart's - it's all about Stormhold and the …

2007-08-05 05:53 36 scans from Entertainment Weekly Collector's Edition (some spoilers!)
We now have all 36 scans from Entertainment Weekly's Collector's Edition! It features cute little articles, like their very own Hogwart's Yearbook. It has pictures of some of the characters along with little blurbs that mention what they'll most likely be when they grow up and what their interests are now. Also, there's a book-by-book summary, including one on Deathly Hallows, so if you haven't finished it, beware of spoilers! However, all articles that contain them are labled "spoilers" very cl …

2007-08-02 05:13 Dumbledore Deconstructed in Deathly Hallows
Ok, so this is a major post, or rather a post on a MAJOR question - the "deconstruction" of Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I am writing this partly in response to Andrzej's question on the matter in relation to the Christian meaning of the works, and partly because, especially with the major Dumbledore backstory given in DH, it is probably the single biggest and hottest discussion topic concerning DH and has to be addressed. I have put this one off to the end (I will l …

Florence looked on with interest. This was the boy who d jinxed those two arrogant rich kids, the soon-to-be Gryffindors who d elbowed her off one of the boats to make way for a red-haired girl (also a Gryffindor, it transpired). 2007-08-01 21:19 Great Books for Girls and Boys
What a wonderful day. I'm just about half way into my vacation week. Nothing like reading some Harry Potter by the ocean. Oh my goodness. I am so glad I waited until all the books were published before starting this series. Otherwise, my teeth would be worn down from the agony of waiting for each and every book to be published. It's that good. You'd think I'd plan better for this, but I didn't. I only brought the first three books-- The Sorcerer's Stone, The Chamber of Secrets, The Prisoner of A …

2007-08-01 15:05 My DH post
Most people have said a lot of what I wanted to say. Families In general, I loved the strength of the mothers in this. Narcissa, Molly, dead Lily, even Petunia, Tonks and Andromeda. Families in this were interesting. Dudley, whom I think of as as abused by the smothering and limitng love of his parents as Harry was by their neglect, may turn out all right as an adult. He isn't a good person, but I had feared he was completely incapable of independent thought, and he's proved different. Yay Dudle …

2007-07-28 17:09 post- HP7, a plot bunny
This is from a comment I made on my previous post, my initial reaction to HP. I am gradually becoming more and more interested in the untold story of Hogwart's students while the Trio is off adventuring in book 7. And I just had this AWESOME thought about pairings... I prefer Harry/Luna, but I've got nothing really against Luna/Neville. I didn't care for it before because it felt like a pairing that was purely convenience for a fan trying to pair people off, both of them being socially awkward c …

I finished reading the book about a week ago, but haven't gotten around to putting my thoughts about it down in an entry. Overall, I really liked the book. Both what in specific I liked, and my complaints about it, are behind the cut. My biggest complaint about the book was that I thought she used polyjuice potion as a plot device waaay too many times. This was compounded by the fact that they didn't really have to work to get it at all. They were essentially handed a vat of it at the beginning …

2007-07-28 06:01 On Sacrifice, Repentance, and King's Cross Station
Warning, Disclaimer, etc... I waited a week. Exactly a week. If for some strange reason you have not yet finished Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows stop reading now. This post contains my thoughts on the themes present in the final book and therefore contains spoilers. Consider yourself warned. As we finally hold in our hands the complete saga of Harry Potter what we find is not just an entertaining story of young witches and wizards coming of age in a parallel world to ours, but a beautiful …

One of my Hogwart Prefects, Clidonia Acromantula, recently told me about three Harry Potter socks featured on the Socktopia site. These three patterns, Nagini, Bellatrix and Fawkes made my personal top list for creativity! And, the whole Socktopia concept made me long to join this group of clever knitters. Socktopia is a year long theme based sock KAL. The goal is to have 12 finished socks by the end of the year. Instead of everyone knitting the same pattern, you knit a theme. Each month five …
