2007-08-12 20:41 Tim O Reilly on Web 2 0
It's a bit of a long read, but there are some very interesting perceptions in there - especially the notion on Page 3 that it's not content production that will lead Web 2.0 as much as content aggregation via software applications: http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/orei...is-web-20.html Quote: The recent introduction of Google Maps provides a living laboratory for the competition between application vendors and their data suppliers. Google's lightweight programming model has led to the creation of …

This one is inspired by my mom, who has decided that I need to buy a house. I think it's so they can move in with me during the summer now that they've sold their "summer home" and don't want to live in Florida full time. Ah, the life of the retired! So, I checked out both Zillow and HousingMaps. I found HousingMaps to be nice and simplistic, as it is just based on Google Maps. Unfortunately, the focus is on houses around the DC area, as that is the nearest Craigslist site. Though, I did happen …

2007-07-25 12:05 Craigslist Google Maps Rental Market Mashup
CraigStats is a new Google Maps rental market mashup for the city of San Francisco. It combines rental listings from Craigslist, Google Maps and FortiusOne's GeoIQ for heatmapping (see image to the right), along with several options to analyze the entire rental market or by micro-area of San Francisco. To learn more about Ethan Garner's inspiration to create CraigStats, take a look at "Overall Stats/Notes" -> "Why / Who did this" It's an interesting story! Other Craigslist Google Maps Mashups: H …

2007-07-12 21:11 Google kills its Maps Developer Community
First MyMaps and now Mapplets. With these two, summarized in this blog post, I think Google has essentially killed its Maps Developer Community. They want to do it all by themselves. Do they really believe that they can think of all the housingmaps-like ideas We have a number of projects – internal and externals – with respect to maps and I think they are just not worth it if Google is going this route. Anyone wanting to innovate on the Google Maps API any longer Anyone

2007-07-11 12:58 Google Maps Mashups 2.0
Posted by Thai Tran, Product Manager When we were building the original Google Maps site, we envisioned that it would eventually become a platform for navigating all kinds of location-based information, such as home listings and travel information. Within weeks of the launch of Google Maps, we were pleasantly surprised that an independent developer named Paul Rademacher released HousingMaps.com, a site that displayed housing listings from Craigslist on top of our interactive maps -- what is now …

2007-06-08 17:50 Craigslist cuts off Listpic, cites bandwidth issues, TOS violations
Listpic, the visual searching and browsing tool for Craigslist has been blocked from the service as of yesterday. Craigslist creator Craig Newmark posted on the Craigslist user forums to alert the community to the shutdown last night, citing bandwidth drains and Listpic's attempts to "monetize" Craigslist by piggybacking off their services and using their own advertising. Newmark claimed that so much bandwidth was being used by the third party service that it was "making it harder for the vast b …

2007-06-06 05:01 Why is Web 2.0 so hard to define
Marc Andreessen has posted a provocative blog about Web 2.0 - with a headline of " Why there's no such thing as Web 2.0 ". It is true that the classical definition of Web 2.0 is long and complex. It doesn't trip off the tongue! Marc Andreessen points to Tim O'Reilly's compact definition :"Web 2.0 is the network as platform, spanning all connected devices; Web 2.0 applications are those that make the most of the intrinsic advantages of that platform: delivering software as a continually-updated s …

2007-05-30 23:15 Mashups made easy
Posted by Paul McDonald, Product Manager Ever since the debut of HousingMaps.com, we've been fascinated by what the developer community has been able to do with our technology. Mashups enable us to visualize data in different ways, combine applications and data together in one interface, and harness the power of data feeds. You've done an amazing job creating some powerful and influential applications using our APIs and developer tools, but we know we can always make the development process easi …

2007-05-30 01:03 Google Maps at the Google Developer Day
Posted by Dion Almaer, Google Developer Programs You may have noticed that we had some great announcements at Where 2.0 today. The major news was: Street View : Now when you see a special blue street, you will be able to click on it to put a virtual representation of yourself on the map. Then you can look around and see what you would see if you were there. This is not only incredibly cool, but it is practical. Now, when I have to visit a new building, I can take a look at it, and even see if th …

2007-05-29 17:00 Mashup of Mashups
Posted by Thai Tran, Product Manager In the two years since we originally released the Google Maps API, we have been continually impressed by all the innovative and interesting new applications that developers have built on top of our maps. One day we were looking at two of the original Google Maps mashups, HousingMaps.com and ChicagoCrime.org, and we realized it would be even more useful if they could be combined because most people wouldn't want to live near high crime areas. We also noticed t …

2006-07-18 17:54 œWhat If Acquisitions - Future of Auto Buying/Selling
I think many of us dream about getting a new car; we listen to the radio and will pay attention to the deals and see both the national and regional advertisements. The problem with this is that I believe most people do not buy a car on impulse. It s great knowing that such and such dealer is having a 48-hour sale, but that will only lure the person in the buying moment. It won t lure the rest of the people who might even be within 60 days of buying. This approach is more like bobbing for apples; …

2006-05-01 18:31 Yi-Tan Ep83 - Describing Web 3.0
Will we look back on Web 2.0 the way we look back on WAP Probably not, because the benefits of 2.0 architectures have already affected the software and services market, as they have blurred the line between application developers and users. HousingMaps.com is a few hundred lines of code. What if you took it further What might be next
