2007-10-23 16:32 10 Cities that are Prime for Real Estate Investment
This months copy of Business 2.0 magazine features an article to help one navigate the real estate markets pending 'bounce back', identifying 10 cities primed for pumping (I'll disclose them in a minute). What the core of the article is about, is a tried and true investing practice that I've mentioned here before, yet seems to escape the minds of the statu-quo reader out there: nocopeemee If you want to make money on a commodity (like property) you must buy it lower than you sell it for, in shor …

2007-10-19 03:45 A Different Kind of Murder (but murder nonetheless)
***POST BY STEVEN LONG*** The victim stood trapped in a steel box as the assailant stood above repeatedly stabbing her in the back. He was aiming to sever the spinal cord but continued to miss. Finally, on the 13th thrust of the stiletto like knife she dropped to her knees and lay on the concrete floor, her spine destroyed, but her mind very much alive. A chain was wrapped around her numb legs and she was hoisted head down as she saw a sharp knife come toward her and felt the slice into her caro …

2007-10-19 02:52 On Paul
Houston Chronicle: Paul leads in donations from military voters, with Obama next. I'd be willing to bet (based on my experience) that about 99.9% of military members have never heard of Ron Paul. The other .1 percent are certainly a generous lot. The story actually only claims that Paul "has gotten more contributions than any other White House contender from donors identified as affiliated with the military. Not sure how that's defined. If your hairdresser's kid is on delayed entry are you "affi …

Slate skriver: Today, the limited success stories come from towns that have actually treated Wi-Fi as a public calling. St. Cloud, Fla., a town of 28,000, has an entirely fre …

Admittedly, the torrent of "surprise" expressed in practically all the rest of the media over the elevation of the American South's first prince of the church has been, well, rather confounding. Par for the (press) corps, sure, but still .... See, even on Cardinal-designate Daniel DiNardo's first morning as head of the US' sixth-largest diocese (19 months ago), it was intimated on these pages that the red hat was already believed to be on its way to Galveston-Houston (...with the hint dropped ag …

2007-10-18 12:09 Patients in US have greater access to advanced medical technology than do Canadians.
As reported in a December 2003 story by Kerri Houston for the Frontiers of Freedom Institute titled "Access Denied: Canada's Healthcare System Turns Patients into Victims," in some instances, patients die on the waiting list because they become too sick to tolerate a procedure.- Capitalism Magazine, Walter Williams, 2005 # Canada spends about 9% of its GDP on health care and provides coverage for all, while the U.S. spends 14% and has millions of people uninsured. Proponents of a Canadian model …

Gord Miller sounds fantastically naive in his response to the story that he was giving Bill Daly information about the dissenting members of the NHLPA that Daly proceeded to pass on to Ted Saskin. As CTVGlobemedia's Miller told CTVGlobemedia's Houston: "Daly should not have forwarded my e-mail to Saskin. That was completely unprofessional. Daly and I had a very terse conversation about in on Saturday, and he apologized." Daly used the information to his benefit. While I'm surprised that it wa …

2007-10-17 20:29 Houston, We Have Lift Off
Last Friday Ellie had her 15 month appt. at the doc's office. When asked when she started walking, I had to say "Not quite yet." {Ugh!!} All of my friend's kids were already running around, but Ellie insisted on holding our hand and was not going to have any part letting go. Then, on Saturday she apparently changed her mind. She didn't just take one or two steps, she was off and all about the house enjoying her new found freedom. WooooHooooo...and OH NO!! It's been a fun and busy few days around …

2007-10-17 15:18 New cardinals
A bit of a surprise was Abp. Daniel DiNardo, 58, who for six years worked at the Vatican's Congregation for Bishops, where he worked for Cardinal Rigali. He was named archbishop last year. There are several other U.S. archdioceses that usually have cardinals leading them, including Washington and Baltimore, but the pope did not elevate their archbishops. Catholic numbers have been rising steadily especially in border states, due to the influx of legal and especially illegal aliens. (Not that Mex …

2007-10-17 10:27 Don't Mess With Texas: In a First, the Red Hat Goes South
In a historic moment that, as never before, underscores the significance of American Catholicism's gravitational shift to the South, Pope Benedict will elevate Archbishop Daniel DiNardo of Galveston-Houston to the College of Cardinals next month. Head of the 1.5 million Catholics of the US' fourth-largest city, DiNardo, 58, was named as one of 23 cardinals-designate by the Pope earlier this morning. While the global list's second slot was, by seniority, given to Philadelphia's own Archbishop Joh …

It's unseasonably warm here in Baltimore, and crude oil prices are unseasonably high. Futures are trading in an opposite trend to recent years, but oil services are following gleefully with the abnormal rally. Here's why. Last week, my colleague Keith Kohl told you we're on the path to $100 a barrel for light, sweet crude. It's the benchmark of today's energy world, and it's squeezing companies and consumers with each new dollar breakthrough on the NYMEX. Today, we broke $89, damn near a new 10- …
