2007-11-06 13:56 Dark Days for Women
udicial authorities in Iran have sentenced two women activists who participated in a peaceful protest against discriminatory laws in June 2006 to more than 30 months in jail and ten lashes. The harsh sentences come amid the recent arrests of more than a dozen student activists, the government closure of the popular Hammihan newspaper, and pressure on Iran's Labour News Agency to stop its activities, in another sweeping crackdown on the Islamic Republic's civil society. Delaram Ali, who is a memb …

I am an asylum seeker who has been here in Sweden for 4 years and 4 months. I have got three negative decisions. But Migrationsverket could not "utvisa" me". Now let us go to the subject which I hope that you are going to rai …

2007-11-04 16:51 How to Rein in Iran Without War
By Jim Hoagland (THE WASHINGTON POST, 04/11/07): Iran is working to produce a 20-to-50-pound stockpile of enriched uranium that it can use to build atomic weapons within eight to 10 weeks, once it decides to do so - and has consistently lied to the United Nations about those efforts. That headline conclusion is one of two basic points that I draw from a series of private meetings on Iran 's nuclear ambitions involving diplomats, leading academic experts, senior military officers and experienced …

2007-10-26 12:22 Not yet rupture, but œa real disenchantment
Reculades, conservatisme... At home the reforms look as if they are unravelling as fast as the government is trying to push them through, indeed there has been so much back-tracking that David Martinon, one of the president s spokesmen, yesterday felt it necessary to redefine what reform means: apparently reforms are not something unpleasant that have to be swallowed …

2007-10-25 20:20 All for one, one for all
By Simon Tisdall (THE GUARDIAN, 25/10/07): Students of the European Union have become accustomed to rating competing member states in a sort of political Champions League table. National standings vary as leaders come and go. The perennial question is: who's up, who's down It's a game the likes of Jacques Chirac loved to play. But in the lull after the storm over the EU's reform treaty, Europe's current Big Three - Britain's Gordon Brown, Germany's Angela Merkel and France's Nicolas Sarkozy - fi …

By David Ignatius (THE WASHINGTON POST, 25/10/07): Here's a Lebanese group snapshot, taken in the land where politics is an extreme sport: In an elegant apartment building overlooking the Mediterranean, several dozen members of the anti-Syrian parliamentary majority are holed up under heavy security. The legislators are trying to stay alive long enough to elect a new president by a Nov. 24 deadline, despite an assassination campaign that has already killed several MPs who dared to challenge Syri …

2007-10-22 13:25 Iran s power struggle intensifies
By Simon Tisdall (THE GUARDIAN, 22/10/07): Saeed Jalili, who replaced Ali Larijani as Iran's top nuclear negotiator at the weekend, is a man of strong moral views who believes spiritual values must inform political actions. His absolute conviction of the rightness of Iran's cause, and his loyalty to his old friend Iran's hardline president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, may make him an awkward interlocutor when talks with the EU on the nuclear dossier resume in Rome tomorrow. In a lengthy interview condu …

2007-10-19 17:57 Abdullah as Engine of Saudi Reform
I'm now in Jeddah, eager to attend the groundbreaking for the King Abdullah University of Science & Technology, to be held Sunday. The university is noted in the following piece which I somehow missed in the on-line-only content of the Summer issue of 'Foreign Policy' magazine. The writers are both experts on the Gulf. What they found during their most recent trip challenges the stereotypes most Americans have of the Kingdom. Reform is both happening in the country and may not be able to be sust …

2007-10-19 02:38 Obama swerves, aiming at Clinton
By J. Patrick Coolican, Las Vegas Sun Published in the Sun on Oct. 19, 2007 Sen. Barack Obama s presidential campaign has moved in a new direction, as evidenced by a rally on Thursday night in North Las Vegas, where he delivered a sharp critique of Sen. Hillary Clinton without mentioning her by name. Nevada Democrats, who on Jan. 19 will hold their presidential caucus, have now seen the campaign of the first-term senator from Illinois move through several stages. There were the gestation period, …

Dearborn Police Not Buying Jihadist Houssein Zorkot's Excuse By Chuck Hustmyre Crime Library DEARBORN, Mich.(Crime Library) Houssein Zorkot just wanted people to think he was tough. That's why he donned dark clothing, painted his face black, and crept through the shadows of Hemlock Park carrying a loaded AK-47 assault rifle. At least that's what he told police detectives and FBI agents hours after his Sept. 8 arrest, according to a source familiar with the investigation. According to the source, …

It sounds a lot better than American TV, if we are to judge from the program descriptions listed in this article from the Grey Lady To Compete, Iranian State TV Adapts. This show, pictured above, will really surprise the neocon propagandists: One popular mini-series, called œZero Degree Turn, depicts the Iranian Embassy in Paris during World War II, when employees forged Iranian passports for European Jews to flee to Iran. The series is built around a love story between an Iranian-Palestinian …

Amidst suggestions that Nancy Pelosi will in fact put the Armenian Genocide resolution in her pocket, it's been quite something to see so many self-styled liberals shake their heads and mutter that, you know, while we feel for the poor Armenians - and please, don't for a moment doubt the seriousness of our compassion - that feeling does extend to doing anything other than cave to Turkey' desire to muddy historical waters that are plenty clear enough (and have been for 90 years) to most reasonabl …

The Washington Note Under Clinton, relations …

By Simon Tisdall (THE GUARDIAN, 16/10/07): In typical he-man style, Russia's Vladimir Putin ignored an alleged plot to assassinate him and went ahead today with a visit to Tehran. Iran says the plot story was black propaganda fabricated by its enemies, which may well be true. Historically speaking, Russians need no outside help in doing away with their leaders. They manage perfectly well by themselves. It is also true though that, over the centuries, Persian-Russian relations have been spattered …
