2007-09-24 23:03 Tapas in Seville
Flying from Frankfurt (Germany) to Jerez (Spain, ~ 2460km) is cheaper... ...than taking the train from Frankfurt to Bremen (Germany, ~440km). In other words: it's cheaper visiting my friends in Spain than seeing my family over the weekend in Bremen. Crazy.

2007-09-06 13:38 Viva Jerez
Although the12 hour Plymouth-Jerez journey ensured a late arrival in Spain, it still left us with enthusiasm sufficient to take in the first sights and smells of our new city. Soon, we traded bright lights and bustling activity of the main street in favour of the dustbins and double parking on several of its ever decreasing arteries. We swept through the backstreets in search of a cheapo room. With a room secured we headed back out to search for nuts and berries - but only out as far as the e …

As much as I've enjoyed this summer, the appeal of a week in the sun with the better half and no responsibilities was just too good to turn down. So here I am in Seville, in the south of Spain. Its ten to 9 right now and the weather outside is at 97C, although from my air conditioned room in Hotel Sevilla Center, you'd never tell. I'll keep the boring travel stories for our families, but I'll let ye know about any culinary delights I encounter. So far the only coffee I've had was at the Hotel br …

2007-08-17 01:12 Traveling the world to examine the World Equestrian Games
The Herald-Leader doesn t often have a chance to send reporters on assignment to Europe. But when the city of Lexington was named host city of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, we knew we needed to get a reporter overseas to see how previous host cities had carried out the Games. We wanted to see what lessons Lexington could learn from places like Aachen, Germany, and Jerez, Spain the last two World Games sites and what challenges might lay ahead for the Bluegrass in the years before …

2007-08-13 09:11 My tube
This week, I'm going to go through my YouTube favourites and pick some out, annotate them and shove them up here. A window into my soul, if you will. Or a window into madness. Either way is good. Today's offering: Ayrton Senna's qualifying lap for the 1990 Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez in a McLaren MP4/5B Honda. It's the 29th September 1990, and Senna, leading the World Championship with three rounds remaining, is going for pole. This lap, a 1m18.387, will beat his bitter rival and Championship co …

2007-07-24 02:48 Murray Walker reminds us why he's missed
There was another reason why the European Grand Prix was great. It brought the one-off return of Murray Walker, commentating on an F1 race for a UK broadcaster for the first time since 2001. Radio Five Live's regular Formula 1 commentator, David Croft, was off to watch his baby being born. Murray Walker was invited to fill his chair for one race only. This presented a dilemma to F1 fans: do you stick with the ITV coverage, or do you switch on the radio to listen to Murray Walker I was a little b …

I´m going away again. J´s grandmother turns eighty, so we´ll be in Jerez, celebrating the occasion with elegant furore. Since I don´t want you to suffer in the July heat, I´ll remind you of a very easy, very chic, very refreshing dish that takes three minutes to put together: melon soup .

2007-07-19 18:00 The King of Spain and the President of Estonia do dinner
The President of Estonia went on a state visit to Spain earlier this month, where he discussed the establishment of a cyber centre in Tallinn, energy policies and the the strength of Europe. And of course, ate a lot and well. Below is the menu served at the official dinner hosted by the King of Spain, Juan Carlos I, and Queen Sophia. Let me just tell you that I've only got hold of the menu thanks to my 'best contact in Spain', Ximena. She had to mobilise her extended Spanish family and engage in …

Spanish Gays Protest Pending Iranian Executions, Hanged Gay Teens July 19 marks two years since Iran hanged two gay teenagers and unlike last year, in which hundreds of activists in dozens of countries and cities worldwide took the streets to stage vigils and protests, this year's commemorative events will be smaller. It's because of the unnecessary obstacles placed before activists by the LGBT staffers at the Human Rights Watch that so few cities are involved this year. HRW staffers have hurled …

2007-06-23 14:59 Sherry and Tapas~A trip down memory lane
Growing up, I always had the desire to learn a foreign language (or two or three). But being from a small town and attending a small high school, I didn't have many options. The only foreign language classes we offered were Spanish 1 and Spanish 2. These days I question whether my Spanish 1 teacher actually knew more than 5 words of the language, so I feel very lucky that I had such a great Spanish 2 teacher. Mrs. Beaver had traveled a lot and had lived in Germany, so she knew German better than …

Ana Blanco Soto. Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), 1899 - 1987. All the human flow of passion from this exceptional old lady emerges like a terrible flower in each one of her flaming lamentations. We consider the untouchable root of flamenco to be represented exactly by those fond, humble, heart-wrenching groans, extracted from the darkest racial memory... Jump to the full entry & travel map Madrid, Spain It has been a while since I got on here. My first train ride from Paris to Madrid was quite nice. I ended up in a room with a retired professor from Jerez, Spain and he used to teach French and Spanish. Anyhow, I slept quite comfortably on the bunk bed and he had to sleep with a machine plugged in to help him breath so I kept worrying that he was going to die on me. In the morning, he got up first and headed to breakfast--I joined him shortly the …
