Wall Street Journal : Microsoft Corp. agreed to invest $240 million for a 1.6% stake in Facebook Inc. that values the social-networking site at $15 billion, beating Google Inc. in a closely watched contest. As part of the deal, the two companies expanded their existing advertising agreement. Microsoft, which previously handled Facebook's U.S. ad sales, will now also sell the site's international advertising. "We are pleased to take our Microsoft partnership to the next level," said Owen Van Natt …

2007-10-15 10:37  From the Rector's Office
The "Vice-Pope" may already be making his voice heard on a New York appointment of a more prominent sort, but one Gotham move that garnered a bit of attention over the summer was Cardinal Edward Egan's appointment of his well-loved auxiliary, Bishop Gerald Walsh, as rector of the archdiocesan seminary at St Joseph's, Dunwoodie. A veteran pastor and onetime secretary to the saintly Cardinal O'Connor dubbed "St Gerry" by one of his former students, Walsh's naming to head the Stateside seminary tha …

2007-10-13 01:35  12 A pril 2002 and 12 October 2007: 2 ways to make a coup
The news today is without doubt the start of a legislative coup by the National Assembly of Venezuela. If they get away with it, any pretense of democracy in Venezuela will be done for, once and for all. To the constitutional changes proposed by Chavez, 33 articles by themselves, the National Assembly, N.A., "select" committee has decided to add at least two dozen more articles (and the list may grow by Monday). This addition was done today, behind closed doors, by a small commission of the N.A. …

Here's an interesting article from BBC News, Book author wins historic libel case, by Torin Douglas, Media correspondent. The author of a book about police corruption has won a ground-breaking libel case in the Court of Appeal. Three judges found in favour of Graham McLagan and his publisher, Orion, overturning an earlier judgement against a former Flying Squad officer, Michael Charman. That ruling found that Mr Charman had been libelled in the book Bent Coppers - The Inside Story Of Scotland Ya …

2007-10-09 04:00  The Ghost and Mrs. Clinton
One of the ghosts from the Clintons' past just keeps showing up at odd moments. Sandy Berger, the Clinton adviser who was convicted of destroying the only copies of top secret documents about the terrorism threat to this nation, is now a campaign adviser to Hillary Clinton. Even as the 9/11 Commission was in the process of requesting and using the documents in question to prevent another major attack, Berger was observed repeatedly going into the archives in Washington to retrieve official docum …

Tomorrow's news today! Here is a piece from the New York Times, Libel Without Borders by Rachel Donadio, October 7, 2007, in its entirety with my comments: When it first appeared in 2006, "Alms for Jihad," an academic book on Islamic charitable networks by two American scholars, drew scant attention. It sold a modest 1,500 copies and received few reviews. But in recent weeks the book has become an international cause célèbre, after Cambridge University Press agreed to pulp all unsold copies in a …

2007-10-01 05:02  The Tradition of Freedom of Speech
I don't do this very often. Actually, I am not sure that I have ever done it. But Peggy Noonan's words need no commentary. You don't want to judge Christ by Christians, someone once said. He is perfect, they are not. In a similar way you don't want to judge capitalism by capitalists, or the legitimacy of democracy by the Democrats, or the vitality of our republic by the Republicans. You have to take the thing pure and in itself, while allowing for the flaws and waywardness of its practitioners. …

[Update] - There are updates for January 1997, Febrary 1998 and April 2007. What follows isn't necessarily all scapegoating, but a look at how the Korean media have reported on and represented foreign English teachers here since 1996, which also handily helps provide a brief history of this foreign community as well. There is no global warming consensus In 2004, history professor Naomi Oreskes performed a survey of research papers on climate change. Examining peer-reviewed papers published on the ISI Web of Science database from 1993 to 2003, she found a majority supported the "consensus view," defined as humans were having at least some effect on global climate change. Oreskes' work has been repeatedly cited, but as some of its data is now nearly 15 years old, its conclusions are becoming somewhat dated. Me …

Now let me say I hope I am wrong.
