2007-10-01 12:30  Revisiting the Danish Cartoon Crisis
Over a year after the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten published those now-infamous cartoons of Mohammad one of which portrayed the Muslim Prophet carrying a lit bomb in his turban the country is still noticeably on edge. When I recently visited Copenhagen, a week after a pre-dawn raid netted a handful of suspected Islamic extremists, the twin issues of Islam and integration were difficult to avoid. On television, the news and chat shows were dominated by discussions of coexistence with the coun …

2007-09-06 22:39  Will Sweden cave in
Has Sweden caved asks Baron Bodissey at Gates of Vienna (the American blog which turned into a Swedish news outlet, and an excellent such). Or more precisely: Will Reinfeldt and the Swedish government cave in during tomorrows meeting with the Muslim ambassadors Read first Baron Boddissey's article. Then my comment here, which I first posted at GoV: This whole issue is very interesting and enlightening in many ways. No Sweden will not cave in. The following article appeared in The Mail and Guardian in 2006. I have included it as I quote from it in my "hate speech" blog. "This is not about freedom of speech" Na'eem Jeenah, Charles Amjad-Ali and Salim Vally: COMMENT 10 February 2006 06:00 That the real issue surrounding the Danish cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad is hate speech and incitement to violence, rather than freedom of expression, is clear when the intent behind their publication is understood. The cartoons were meant to be inf …

The Swedes pick up where the Danes left off. This latest round of Scandinavian cartoons featuring the Muslim's prophet Mohamed, (this time as a dog) contains a bit of a twist. According to the blog of Denmark's Jyllands-Posten's culture editor, Flemming Rose ;"A group of secular Muslims in Sweden wants to organize an exhibition showing drawings of the prophet Mohammed as a dog and subsequently stage a public debate with the artist, Islamic scholars and other opinion makers." Bengladeshi physician, author and human rights activist, Taslima Nasrin, is a woman who has displayed tremendous courage in the face of harassment and death threats issued by Muslim fundamentalists. Although Muslim by birth, Nasrin now says she is an Atheist. She has been a powerful spokesperson for feminism - a conviction arising in part from sexual assaults she experienced at the hands of relatives during her early years. 2007-08-20 16:12  Cannibals with jetpacks are NOT funny
As a comic book reader for many years, I also do my best to pay attention to what goes on in this all but under-the-radar industry, and if you ask me, there are quite a few things going on there today that conservatives would do well to take a closer look at (chomskyism, anti-war sentiments, misogyny, blame-the-victim messages and even sympathy for terrorists are among the most disturbing things you can find there now). That's one of the reasons why I also maintain a blog called The Four Color M …

Let's say that there was a story in which Osama bin Laden were depicted flying around on a jetpack. Some people seem to think that All-New Atom #14 is some kind of classic. I don't and here's why. Brussels Journal has a posting on how Belgian authorities have given permission for a march sponsored by United for Truth protesting Bush's involvement in 9-11, but not for one against the imposition of Sharia in Europe. The reasoning: Unlike the anti-Sharia demonstration, planned to be held next September 11 in Brussels, the œ9/9 United for Truth demonstration of September 9 has been authorized by the Brussels authorities. Last week the Brussels mayor, Freddy Thielemans, banned the anti-Shari …

2007-08-14 15:24  That Doggone Mohammed
I have written previously about the Swedish artist Lars Vilks, who had entered several drawings depicting Mohammed as a dog in a Swedish art exhibit, only to have them preemptively censored by the exhibit s organizers. Mr. Vilks response to the controversy, especially after he started to receive death threats, has been to draw more pictures of the Prophet as a dog. The latest, shown at right, is titled œThe Prophet Mohammed as a Mullah-Dog . Lars Vilks confrontational behavior seems rather atyp …

2007-08-13 22:45  Quibbling Over Words
One of the serendipitous side effects of the 9-11 attacks and their aftermath was to make all of us ignorant infidels aware of the richness, flexibility, nuance, and shall we say ambiguity of the Arabic language. A well-known example is the word jihad, which most of us thought meant œholy war . Come to find out that it has other meanings, such as œinner struggle , œsoul-fulfillment , and even, according to some linguists, œmulticultural interfaith peace festival. It turns out that intifada …

2007-07-27 13:28  False Parallels
Karen Armstrong, British author of several books about Islam, fundamentalism and the life of the prophet Mohammed, former nun and self-described "freelance monotheist", warns us against intolerance towards Islam and the Muslim world. Writing in The Guardian, she asserts that if the West were only more respectful of Islam, extremism might then fade away. "Our inability to tolerate Islam not only contradicts our Western values; it could also become a major security risk," she writes. As evidence f …

2007-07-19 17:40  Hospitality What Hospitality
This was the front page of today's Daily Express, or Daily Spew as I call it here, about an idiotic demonstration by a few women in "burkhas" against the sentencing of a group of idiots who shouted slogans like "bomb Denmark" during a demonstration outside the Danish embassy against the Jyllands Posten cartoons last year. There is a reference to the women "swarming", which is a huge exaggeration. It was a pretty small demo, as you can probably imagine. However, what "hospitality" are they talkin …

It doesn't come as a surprise to read today, that the police intelligence agency in Denmark (PET, Politiets Efterretningstjeneste) is in contact with the Imams in this country. This contact is indeed to be expanded according to the newspaper, Jyllands Posten. The idea is, that contact with these people is an attempt by PET to prevent, or reduce, the threat of islamic terrorism. According to the article, PET thinks it is important to have contact and dialogue with groups that have "controversial …

It beggars belief that the population of London, let alone Islamabad, is reading Danish cartoons as a matter of course. I bet the Danish speaking population of London can be numbered in the hundreds and, in Pakistan, I'd be surprised if there are more than a handful of speakers of Danish as a second language. So, the whole furore was blatantly manufactured. All the same, to be honest, I am a bit ambivalent about this. Today, four people were jailed for 6 years each for their parts in an anti-Dan …

2007-07-17 15:32  Denmark: What is a fatwa
A fatwa is an Islamic legal ruling.  It can be a "death sentence", which in today's Muslim world actually means calling for an "open season" on somebody, but it doesn't have to be.  It can technically be any decision on how to act in a specific case. When the Danish Islamic Society lost its court case against Pia Kjærsgaard, its leaders announced they will seek a fatwa.  A fatwa for what   This was Reuter's take on the story: "We are very disappointed with the verdict and are considering an appe …
