2007-10-11 09:54  A Martyr in Gaza: Rami Khader Ayyad
Randall Buth in a post at ETC notes the wanton killing of Rami Khader Ayyad, the director of the bookstore of the Palestine Bible Society in Gaza. Bibbiablog has far more information on the killing, from an article in Corriere della Sera, the Italian equivalent of the New York Times. Below the fold I provide details in English translation. ETC s labels for the post, let it be said, are spot on: œBible Society, Christian, Islam, martyr, Middle East. The Bible Society s Gaza bookstore was set on …

Mayor Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Klein: Shut Down KGIA Now! Citizens for American Values in Public Education and Stop the Madrassa are again demanding answers from Mayor Bloomberg and Chancellor Klein about the presence of a radical imam on the Khalil Gibran International Academy s Advisory Board. 2007-10-08 12:31  Kristen palestinier mördad i Gaza
Ayyad begravdes igår i kyrkan al-Roum, Gaza. JPost skriver följande: They noted that a …

2007-10-01 12:30  Revisiting the Danish Cartoon Crisis
Over a year after the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten published those now-infamous cartoons of Mohammad one of which portrayed the Muslim Prophet carrying a lit bomb in his turban the country is still noticeably on edge. When I recently visited Copenhagen, a week after a pre-dawn raid netted a handful of suspected Islamic extremists, the twin issues of Islam and integration were difficult to avoid. On television, the news and chat shows were dominated by discussions of coexistence with the coun …

Alas, here is the second part of my interview with Stephen Graham who teaches Human Geography at the University of Durham and is the Deputy Director of the Centre for the Study of Cities and Regions and the Associate Director of the International Boundaries Research Unit. In Part 1 we talked about the nature of cities as sites constituted by what Steve calls the œnew military urbanism, a state that is less about the border than its internalization, less about linear lines of defense than amorp …

2007-09-04 13:17  Will This Muslim Save Europe
A quote from the BBC s Mark Mardell at his blog, 3 September 2007 Denmark's conservative leader, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, has promised Angela Merkel that he will do his very best to avoid a referendum [on the revised European constitution]. They are both painfully aware that it could trigger a domino effect that might knock over Mr Brown by heating up the already pretty hot demands for such a vote in the UK. [...] [T]he really critical point is the call for a referendum by Naser Khader, a charisma …

One might think that post title was directed at myself, but actually it's not. I'm sorry to be too busy to update this blog more frequently, hopefully I will soon find the right routine. Back to the title. I am wondering a lot these days why you don't see more CEOs or political leaders blogging, the standard answer from most of them seems to be that they are too busy. As I said above, I think it's about routines and prioritization. Especially for political leaders, the blog should be equally imp …

Struck by the abuse of language in the articles about attempted terrorist attacks, Don Morris rewrote the narrative to show how responsible reporting would more accurately portray what occurred. 2007-08-26 20:36  Free speech in Hong Kong; recent publication
In "Who are the real vultures", posted last week, Merpel ventured to raise questions as to the freedom of speech in Hong Kong. She wrote: "it would be unfair to criticise the Hong Kong court without being in receipt of the full facts, but one gets the uneasy feeling that freedom of communication does not enjoy quite the same level of prestige as a legal right in the Chinese-owned former colony as it does in the European Union". 2007-08-15 11:55  Free Speech : Too Offensive
Atheists and Agnostics are frequently accused of being everything from bigoted to intolerant, simply because they are honest. There is an expectation in N. America that we are all, in one way or another - believers. I mean believers in God. The great hypothetical. The man upstairs. People reference "the Lord" in conversation while making the assumption that their listeners are in tune with that sentiment. Muslims often assume that if you're a white dude of a certain age, you're some species of C …

Okay: According to Politiken (dare I still trust that paper), Naser Khader now publicly states that he did discuss a possible defection from the Liberals to Ny Alliance with Eyvind Vesselbo. Topic for discussion: If we assume that Khader - or someone very close to him - is the source for Politiken's original story, why would Khader take the risk of announcing a defection which wasn't already completed In politics, these things work by the surprise effect: Call a press meeting, appear with Mr. X …

On Tuesday, May 22, Pew Research released a comprehensive survey of American Muslims, that covered cultural, social, religious, political, and other domains. See each quote from the survey below followed by my analysis. "Interviews were conducted in English, Arabic, Urdu and Farsi." This is not unimportant. 2007-05-07 17:22  Quote of the Day
The quote of the day is not from Naser Khader but from The Quick and the Ed : People who support choice and diversity in delivery of publicly-funded education need to come to terms with the reality that real choice includes some schools that not everyone will like. Of cause we always have to face the question about the limits of which approaches the government should accept so in a convoluted way depoliticising an issue carries an element of re-politicising it.
