2007-11-06 12:50 Blue Plate Special
It was another one of those Uni Watch red-alert moments last night, as about a dozen readers e-mailed me all at once and another half-dozen or so posted all at once in the comments section. The cause Jason Strudwick of the Rangers got in a fight and his nameplate came loose during the fisticuffs, revealing some nasty-looking adhesive residue on the underside. All of which is very entertaining. But here's my question: Since when have the Rangers been using nameplates I always thought they used di …

2007-10-16 00:43 Vandy Recap
It wasn't pretty, but a win is a win is a win. Considering the season thus far, and the six straight SEC East losses coming into the game, this was also a very big win. To recap, I'm just going to comment on how we fared with my Keys to the Game. Image from OnlineAthens.com. On Offense 1. Knocking Vanderbilt back on offense coming off the ball. We didn't knock Vandy off the ball when run blocking, but the defensive line wasn't having a party in the backfield like Tennessee did either. While ther …

2007-10-10 02:10 Kno Longer the Backup
Knowshon Moreno has been named the starter for the Vanderbilt game. Kregg Lumpkin will come off of the bench. This was really a no brainer considering Lumpkin still has a splint on his right thumb. Although, he did look good with the few carries he got against Tennessee. This is the luxury of having three backs. Hopefully we won't miss a beat swapping out Brown for Lumpkin.

2007-09-25 02:18 Moreno Receives Accolades
Knowshon was named SEC Freshman of the Week for his performance against Alabama. This was well deserved. From the UGA release: Through four games, Moreno leads Georgia with 342 rushing yards for an average of 85.5 yards per game, which is ninth in the SEC (second for freshmen) and 56th in the nation. Also, Moreno is second on the team with 120 receiving yards and was part of a Georgia offense that generated 377 total yards against the Crimson Tide. Leading the team in rushing and second in recei …

2007-09-24 12:11 Forgive Lloyd. Pardon Lloyd. Grant Lloyd Atonement for Never Running the Clock Out.
For those of you who have not had the intense pleasure of watching 12-13 Michigan games every fall for the entirety of Lloyd Carr's tenure, you may not quite understand the basic tenets of Lloydball. For the uninitated who haven't seen all 153 of Lloyd's games as coach in Ann Arbor, here's a basic primer: 1. Running the football is the preferred way to progress down the field. Passing is fun when behind, in long yardage, and/or to loosen up defenses, but the default call on offense should be a r …

2007-09-02 16:43 You've got the brawn, I've got the brains, let's make lots of money.
The '07 Bulldogs charge the field for the first time. Not trying to get blatantly self-promotional here, but in my preview of the Oklahoma State game written a few weeks ago, I said the following: I know that all of Bulldog Nation wants to believe this game is setting up like Boise State '05, in which an up-and-coming team with a potent offense came into Sanford with Shocking Upset on their mental to-do list but instead got pwn3d harder than Dan Quayle in a spelling bee, but that Boise State tea …

2007-08-30 17:05 The X-factor
Kudos to Marc Weiszer of the ABH for raising this topic. Often a game that is hyped as a showdown between units or players ends up turning on something else entirely. A great pitcher's duel turns into a slugfest. A basketball battle between dominant centers is won by outside shooting. Happens all the time. There are other people on the field, and the real opportunities and threats can come from places other than the matchups in the spotlight. Weiszer highlights OSU tight end Brandon Pettigrew as …

2007-08-24 01:32 Scrimmage report
Team Georgia creamed Team Oklahoma State (the scout team) 31-7. No surprise there. * Stafford was very unhappy with the offense's energy level, but Richt wasn't quite as upset -- pointing out it's hard to get too excited about playing the scout team. * Sounds like Thomas Brown will be the starting tailback. * Knowshon Moreno had what might have been a 93-yard kickoff return TD and Mikey had a long punt return that might have gone for a score, but Richt said he blew the plays dead. Quotes and sta …

2007-08-23 04:46 Few things from Wednesday
Here's a link to my practice notebook for today. Today was another fairly uneventful day, as far as I could tell. I spent a good portion of practice trying to find out if any SEC radio play-by-play/color team besides Georgia didn't have an ex-player in the booth. Nope, Georgia was the last one...although Eric Zeier will change that fact for the five away games this year. Thought that was interesting. Not good or bad, just different. Although having Larry Munson in the booth made it a pretty non- …

2007-08-22 18:57 Maize n Preview: A Misguided and Misinformed 2007 SEC Football Preview
The SEC was founded in 1881 by migrant railroad workers as a method of doling out food rations. Today, the losers of these interstate sporting events are no longer put to death as there is finally enough food for everyone and the SEC is economically strong enough to feed all its migrant workers and athletes. Florida and Tennessee line up for a spirited game of Who Gets to Eat in 1899. Kidding aside, the SEC came into being in 1932 as a 13 team league. Over time, it and the states the conference …

2007-08-22 12:28 Countup to Kickoff. . .
Unless you have been bunkered down with Mike Vick discussing legal options, you probably know that the University of Georgia's college football season kicks off in earnest in a mere 12 days. In honor of this auspicious 12th day before kickoff, I'd like to present the "countup" of things you need to know about University of Georgia football as we approach 0 hour.. . 0 - The precise number of interceptions thrown by one Matthew Stafford in Firday's second scrimmage of the preseason. His final line …

2007-08-20 23:32 Georgia Bulldogs Blogger Inter(Pre)view with Dawg Sports
Over the final days leading up to kickoff, we'll be interviewing college football's top bloggers to give us some insight, wit and predictions for the school they passionately follow. The Georgia Bulldogs have high hopes this season with Matt Stafford at the helm. While I'm afraid he may disappoint, one Bulldog that never disappoints is T. Kyle King who runs DawgSports.com. His answers below may be lengthy, but it's well worth your attention. Not only will you know everything there is to know abo …

2007-08-20 03:06 Much-needed day off
Today was an awesome day, as it was the first true day off I've had in weeks. Seriously. At any rate, I figured I should post something just to have a post for the night. The subject came up yesterday morning with coach Richt about which starting positions are still up in the air. The ones that are most obvious are tailback, cornerback and receiver. Punter may still be up for grabs, too. Can't be too sure on that one. I feel pretty confident that all the rest are settled, but like Richt said, th …

2007-08-16 01:03 Let's Ask Bristol (if you want terrible analysis)
ESPN has their "Power 16" list of the top college football teams up, as based upon voting by their particular experts. Georgia is at #11, which is probably too high in my opinion. But the reasons some of the experts give are just ree-damn-dick-a-loss. Todd Blackledge on Pass Offense QB Matthew Stafford took his lumps (7 TDs, 13 INTs) last year as a freshman. But he has a big, accurate arm and surprising mobility. Question is: Who will be his safety valve Senior Sean Bailey is speedy, but he has …

2007-08-13 15:54 Talking punting with David Johnson
I spoke with several folks this morning after the 8:30 practice -- Brian Mimbs, Drew Butler, David Johnson, Tony Ball and Knowshon Moreno among them. Also saw Scott Haverkamp and asked him how the ankle's holding up. He said someone rolled up on it in the scrimmage, but that he thinks it'll be OK and believes he will be back later this week. Coach Johnson is in charge of the punters, so I talked to him about the competition betwen Mimbs and Butler. As if the list above didn't give it away, I'm w …

2007-08-06 17:52 The Buzz: Inside the First Days of Fall
Fall practice is underway! Reports are rolling in from a weekend of sizing up, questioning and, above all, sunny-eyed optimism. A few of the highlights from the first glorious, sweltering days on the practice field... - - - Kansas: Mark Mangino reports to KU camp at 425 pounds, but said he wasn't worried about entering the season above his usual coaching weight of 380. "Give me a little time in the heat, and by game time, I'll be 385, tops," a profusely sweating Mangino gasped from his golf cart …

2007-07-31 00:20 A Bulldog Tempts the Wrath of a Vengeful God, Part I: Oklahoma State.
As promised, here is the first in a 12-part series of previews of each of Georgia's regular-season games this year. I realize I'm tempting fate in a big way here, but maybe in some small way the heightened pressure of doing this will prompt me to live a better, more generous, less sinful life over the next few weeks, in the hopes that God won't go looking for extra ways to punish me with a disastrous football season. Each chapter of this unfolding, potentially deity-enraging story will feature p …

2007-07-24 13:28 I Wanna SEC You Up: The UGA Offense
I gave a cursory breakdown of the Georgia Bulldogs a while back while proclaiming them the team that scares me most on our schedule. Despite the loss of Paul Oliver in the secondary, I still stand by my assertion that this is a talented team that has all the tools it needs to make it to Atlanta at the end of the season. The Offense Category Rank Scoring Offense 7th Passing Offense 9th Total Offense 10th Pass Efficiency 10th First Downs 8th 3rd Down Conversions 8th Red Zone Offense 4th Early last …
