2007-10-30 23:16  "A Death in the Family"
Anyone who knew me before I joined knows that I am quite aware and at times sympathetic to the arguments against the war in Iraq. If you think the only way a person could bring themselves to volunteer for this war is through sheer desperation or blind obedience then consider me the exception (though there are countless like me). Consider that there are 19 year old soldiers from the Midwest who have never touched a college campus or a protest who have done more to uphold the universal legitimacy …

2007-10-23 20:17  Nasjonalistisk stemning griper Tyrkia

By Peter W. Galbraith, a former United States ambassador to Croatia and the author of œThe End of Iraq . He is a principal in a company that does consulting in Iraq and elsewhere (THE NEW YORK TIMES, 23/10/07): In a surge of realism, the Senate has voted 75-23 to acknowledge that Iraq has broken up and cannot be put back together. The measure, co-sponsored by Joe Biden, a Democratic presidential candidate, and Sam Brownback, Republican of Kansas, supports a plan for Iraq to become a loose confe …

2007-10-23 18:26  Turkey is a thorn in the side of a cosy western consensus
By Slavoj Zizek, international director of the Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities (THE GUARDIAN, 23/10/07): Recent days have seen Dick Cheney and Tony Blair point belligerent fingers at Tehran, but both spoke in the slipstream of Bernard Kouchner, who a month ago warned the world that it should prepare for war over Iran's nuclear programme. "We have to prepare for the worst, and the worst is war," said the French minister of foreign affairs. The swell of rhetoric - which culminated in Preside …

2007-10-21 11:44  Redd gnostikerne

2007-10-19 20:19  Pelosi s Armenian Gambit
By Charles Krauthammer (THE WASHINGTON POST, 19/19/10): There are three relevant questions concerning the Armenian genocide. (a) Did it happen (b) Should the U.S. House of Representatives be expressing itself on this now (c) Was House Speaker Nancy Pelosi 's determination to bring this to a vote, knowing that it risked provoking Turkey into withdrawing crucial assistance to American soldiers in Iraq, a conscious (columnist Thomas Sowell) or unconscious (blogger Mickey Kaus) attempt to sabotage t …

2007-10-16 13:16  From Russia with pragmatism
By Simon Tisdall (THE GUARDIAN, 16/10/07): In typical he-man style, Russia's Vladimir Putin ignored an alleged plot to assassinate him and went ahead today with a visit to Tehran. Iran says the plot story was black propaganda fabricated by its enemies, which may well be true. Historically speaking, Russians need no outside help in doing away with their leaders. They manage perfectly well by themselves. It is also true though that, over the centuries, Persian-Russian relations have been spattered …

2007-10-16 13:10  Turkey Forms Alliance With Iran Against Kurds
Using its outrage over the House resolution on the Armenian genocide as a pretext to flout its alliance with the United States. By Kenneth R. Timmerman at NewsMax (thanks to Dav): U.S. ally Turkey and U.S. arch-enemy Iran have formed a military alliance to drive opposition Kurds from bases in northern Iraq they have used since 2004 to launch guerrilla operations inside Iran, rebel leaders told Newsmax at a secret base in the Qandil mountains. Both Iran and Turkey have vowed to send troops into n …

2007-10-16 07:11  The first Airbus A380 for Singapore Airlines
I n early Monday morning trade, New York's main oil futures contract, light sweet crude for delivery in November, was 16 cents higher than the US$86.13 a barrel amid mounting tension between Turkey and Kurdish rebels in Iraq. This is a bad news for airlines which are stupid enough not to hedge their fuel price but definitely good news for investors who long oil-related stocks. Thousands of miles away, a small but prosperous nation had a little celebration after waited for about two years. Singap …

Democratic lawmakers moved Monday toward investigating Hunt Oil's oil exploration contract in Iraq, saying the company's ties to President Bush raised questions about whether it had insider information that helped it reach the deal. U.S. Rep. Henry Waxman, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, and U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, asked Hunt to turn over all Iraq-related communication with the U.S. government by Nov. 2. The lawmakers also demanded that Ray Hunt, Hunt …

2007-10-15 18:08  Oil market sensitive to Iraq news
It's amazing how sensitive the oil market is to any negative news from Iraq.  This shows how important Iraqi oil is to the future of the world oil market.  Oil Rises Over $85 to a Record on Increased Turkey-Iraq Tension By Mark Shenk Oct. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Crude oil rose above $85 a barrel for the first time in New York on concern Turkish forces may pursue Kurdish militants in Iraq, curbing shipments as refiners prepare for the peak-demand heating season. 2007-10-13 01:28  Did political opposition to Saddam make Iraqis 'traitors'
It amazes me how many people (mostly Arabs) believed and still believe that Iraqis who opposed Saddam's regime were traitors to Iraq. To me they are heroes.  From Regrets Only 2. By the time the American invasion began in the spring of 2003, the toppling of Saddam Hussein appeared to be one of those rare historic moments when the men of force and the men of hope could stand together. For here, in Hussein, was one of the world's indisputably evil men: he murdered as many as a million of his peopl …

If I were in Congress, I would have voted for the resolution to identify the Ottoman genocide of Armenians a genocide as a matter of principle. However, I share with Juan Cole ( http://www.juancole.com/ ) the sense that out of the 92 years since that horrific event, this is probably the most inappropriate year to have passed such a resolution, even though it is totally bizarre that the Republic of Turkey does not simply agree that its corrupt predecessor did indeed engage in such a genocide and …
