2007-10-12 19:57 The REAL Carolina
On the eve of the much-anticipated gridiron match-up between the upset-minded University of North Carolina and the seventh-ranked University of South Carolina - billed as the "Border War" - the Charlotte Observer contrasts the two schools to determine which Carolina is the REAL Carolina. And in a geographic-role-reversal, the Palmetto State comes out on top. The debate dates to Colonial times, according to a local historian, and is heating up in anticipation of Saturday's matchup between USC and …

From the Examiner : Google bans anti-MoveOn.org ads Robert Cox 2007-10-11 WASHINGTON - Internet giant Google has banned advertisements critical of MoveOn.org, the far-left advocacy group that caused a national uproar last month when it received preferential treatment from The New York Times for its General Betray Us message. The ads banned by Google were placed by a firm working for Republican Sen. Susan Collins re-election campaign. Collins is seeking her third term. Earlier this week, Googl …

2007-10-06 02:36 Do You Love Your Computer A Little Too Much
You know, it is an interesting question. I think I spend more time with my computer than I do my wife. As terrible as that might be, I have to think that some lawyer bloggers, like Rick Georges over at Future Lawyer must be worse than me. He was blogging from his hospital bed. I probably cannot find it now, but he once blog about himself blogging too much. He calls his wife "she who must be obeyed", but I am not sure he is not talking about his computer and his other tech devices. I fully …

2007-09-25 20:04 Fantasy Rankings After Week 3
Here are the Top 5 players at their position: Quarterback Tom Brady Tony Romo Carson Palmer Jake Delhomme Derek Anderson As the season progresses I'm sure we will see Peyton Manning and Donovan McNabb on this list. Derek Anderson scored more than half of his points in week 2. Running Backs Brian Westbrook LaMont Jordan Marion Barber Ronnie Brown Joseph Addai Not the usual suspects on the top 5. I called that Lamont Jordan could be a quality pick in the later rounds and that has proved true. Mari …

2007-09-20 18:34 Fridge Cleaning
Today I cleaned out both my refrigerators. I'm thinking with Daughter Number Two gone, we could get by with one. The problem is they're both British-sized refrigerators, a little more than half the size of American fridge/freezers. And then where would I store my white wine Oh well. It was a good idea. Now I'm cleaning my office. Can you tell I'm procrastinating Wait, I see some yogurt in there I might want. Maybe with those strawberries... I don't know how British people manage with those tiny …

2007-09-18 15:17 The Standard sends mixed messages to Boris' rivals
The Evening Standard is very critical of Boff, Borwick and Lightfoot in its leader today: "It sounded like a good idea at the time: the Tory plans for an open, democratic, X-factor-style mayoral contest to determine who would run against Ken Livingstone. In fact, this exciting approach delivered a line-up of candidates who, whatever their personal merits, are woefully unimpressive as heavyweight politicians. It must be painful for the Tories to consider how quickly Ken Livingstone would have see …

2007-09-06 20:08 The Raiders Aren't Taboo this Season
That's just for one simple reason, their value is so low. I definitely wouldn't recommend trying to figure out their quarterback mess, but look at some of the other options. Lamont Jordan According to myfantasyleague.com Lamont Jordan's average draft position is after players like Carnell Williams and Tatum Bell. If you are in a deeper league where running backs are slim, you could definitely go ahead and draft him in the 6th round. Some leagues are showing that he isn't being drafted until roun …

2007-09-05 15:00 Fantasy Madness: The Fantasy Assassins
Considering most of you -- unless you happened to draft using Yahoo's fantasy game last night -- have already held your fantasy football drafts, you are, today, in the lone moment over the next three months when you won't be tinkering with your team. Right now, you are strong; your team is awesome! And then ... It's always one guy on whom you put all your hopes, and then blasto, poofo, away he goes, destroying your team. A couple of years ago, Daunte Culpepper was the culprit, and The Angry T li …

2007-09-04 11:57 Gillespie On the Netroots
While I'm curious to hear the answer to Ramesh's questions myself, I though Nick Gillespie's review of the Matt Bai book was quite informative and well-done. In many respects it reinforces something we've been talking about around here for a very long time: the Democratic Party may be on an upswing but intellectual liberalism still has a lot of stuff to work out. Some excerpts from the review (emphasis mine): In detailing the machinations of superrich Democratic activists like George Soros, who …

2007-09-03 12:42 The Democratic Strategist ruminates on The Bush Dog campaign
You can read "Concerning 'Bush Dogs'" and its comments here. As someone who has been trying to get her brain wrapped around exactly how the effort fits in with anything I've ever felt as a Democrat, I highly recommend it, especially if, after reading some of the screeds that seem intent on intimidating anyone who doesn't support the effort to commit hari kari, you actually feel like committing hari kari. I encourage you to read it in its entirety if this effort that began on Open Left interests …

2007-09-02 17:39 Fresh Cuts
While most of you are enjoying a leisurely Labor Day Weekend, NFL scouting departments are hard at work trying to identify obscure players to fill out the bottom of rosters. On Saturday, teams released a lot of players who they hoped would eventually end up on their practice squads. I've watched coaches try to hide players in the preseason, but it doesn't always work. For instance, the Cowboys  gambled on free-agent rookie quarterback Matt Moore not being signed, but the Panthers were there to …

2007-08-31 00:27 Katha Pollitt proves there are no feminists at The Nation
Is there anything more pathetic than Katha Pollitt I'm grabbing this because I went into the members e-mail accounts and this is 1 of the 4 biggest topics. I'll grab it and C.I. won't have to. Katha Pollitt is a tired, disgusting voice. She's flaunted her racism when she, as a White woman, felt she could ridicule the NAACP for making an issue of representation -- an issue that White Pollitt doesn't think is important. Strange considering her dumb ass attack on CODEPINK last year for bird dogging …

2007-08-30 05:38 Catching up with CulinaryCorps
Left to right: Sandy, me, Danielle, Christine, Courtney and Jeff during an earlier reunion in July. VH1's "Where Are They Now" satisfies thought-provoking questions, such as "Whatever happened to the cast of 'The Wonder Years'" Inevitably, you learn that they're banished to selling Proactiv on late-night infomercials. Although my relief trip to New Orleans was only a couple months ago, I didn't want my team mates to fade into obscurity like my favorite '80s stars. A CulinaryCorps update was in …

2007-08-29 10:00 Gay Refugee Goes Into Hiding
Alvaro Orozco, the Nicaraguan refugee ordered to be deported from Canada, has gone into hiding. Homosexuality is illegal in Nicaragua and Alvaro had been threatened with violence if he returned, but his Calgarian adjudicator, Deborah Lamont, said he hadn't sufficiently proved he was gay and ordered him to be deported. Since then, all opportunities for appeal have been exhausted. I'm not sure what the Immigration Refugee Board is thinking, considering that Alvaro's story has been published in the …

OK, so it's Tuesday. But in the fast-moving world of rugby blogging, you have to have a shave, change your underwear and take your pale carcass out into the sunlight - well, a pub garden - at least occasionally. Yesterday was such a day. Yesterday was also a good one to take stock of where the ambitions of six of the World's top 11 teams now lie. I say 11, because that's where Scotland currently stand: one rung behind Samoa, two behind Italy. On that basis, Scotland should lose their crunch matc …

2007-08-27 21:55 Updated and Bumped - IRAQ: STANDING AT THE CROSS-ROADS
Ba'athist Party loyalists are waiting like vultures for America's defeat with one eye on signs of Coalition weakness and the other on the Iraqi seat of power. No wonder they are being compared to the notorious Khmer Rouge of another era. A disaster for both America and Iraq would deliver a huge psychological victory directly into the hands of the Defeatocrats. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out why Hillary is calling for the withdrawal of the troops and the removal of the present Ira …
