2007-08-23 01:03 She Almost Got Away With It ...
I went to a party along with my roommates, T and F, a couple of weeks into the fall semester at the UofA (that s Arkansas in case you didn t know) at a house just down the street from our apartment. The people throwing the party had once lived in the same dorm that I had lived in. There were SIX of them living in a three-bedroom house. Yes, they had two twin beds in each bedroom. I think they paid something like $80 each per month that covered their rent, utilities and cable TV. So, on that Frid …

Afternoon nap and movie companions. The sandbar in Leverett Pond is becoming an island. Thanks to the dry summer, vegetation has spouted on it and will hold it in place for some time. Here's what it looked like back in May: More dodder. This fallen beech tree has been swallowed by the forest understory. Here's what it looked like on Thanksgiving 2005: A robber fly was nice enough to hold still for a portrait. On this day in 365 Urban Species: Carpetweed and spurge, two plants that seem made for …

2007-08-02 20:42 World Without the West symposium
Steven Weber came to the magazine today to take part in a roundtable that assessed and critiqued the concept of the "World Without the West." To recap, this is the notion that we are seeing the emergence of a parallel international system that routes around an American-led order. Dov Zakheim raised an interesting point about the nature of the "West" in general--if that is defined as Europe, the United States and Japan. To what extent are the Europeans and the Japanese engaging with the states th …

2007-07-29 03:57 In which Pana moans a bit.
Man... Lately, drawing is like pulling teeth. I never really used to get art blocks before, but I am seriously stumped. I think I'm starting to hate my style. Which is dumb, because I can't change it. I mean, I can mimic styles no problem, but when it comes to changing how things are drawn in my head, it comes back to the same thing, but that thing isn't pleasing me. And of course I don't want to rip off anyone else's style. I just need to find a way to make my style appealing, somehow... I have …

2007-07-10 13:08 Which Way Out of Iraq
Over at The Prospect today, various experts discuss the nuts and bolts of withdrawal from Iraq. It's depressing how bad they all seem to believe their favored options are, much less those of the interlocutors they disagree with. Particularly worth noting is Leverett's forthright assault on the that we need to leave a residual ground force within Iraq for counterterrorism operations: In this regard, it is particularly disappointing that Nossel/Kupchan ignore the critical point that conventional g …

2007-07-08 10:15 What Could, And Should, Have Occurred
by Parviz Note by Bernhard: Parviz characterized her/himself in a previous comment : "Hello, I'm an Iranian living in Iran [...] I am fiercely anti-Mullah [...] I operate under a pseudonym and with a real but totally misleading email address, for obvious reasons." Links below were added by Bernhard. America had a historic opportunity, following the Iranian regime's considerable assistance in defeating the Taliban in Oct/Nov. 2001, not just to gain (because it already had it following 9/11) but t …

2007-07-06 17:41 WHOSE BOMBS
[The following is an extended deconstructive analysis quoting rather liberally from relevant sources. As far as I'm aware, it's the first of its kind to be published in either mainstream or alternative circles. Therefore, please circulate widely.] How to understand the attempted but largely failed terrorist plots uncovered since last Friday Police officers on June 29 dismantled two car bombs made from gas canisters, gasoline and nails, parked in central London s major theatre and shopping distri …

2007-07-06 15:16 Franchise Reform
In the previous post, I quoted a paper as saying competition would promote lower prices. Here's what the authors recommend to produce that competition: Federal reform and additional state-specific reforms have focused on reforming "video franchising" laws to reduce barriers to entry and investment by new service providers. We commend such policies as likely to contribute to investment and competition in broadband services. The Effects of Broadband Deployment on Output and Employment: A Cross-sec …

2007-07-05 10:42 Broadband Black Holes - FiOS We've never been able to get DSL
Two years ago we profiled the rural Massachusetts towns of Shutesbury and Leverett, who have long been trying to get broadband from anyone -- but aren't deemed profitable to serve by Comcast or Verizon. While towns as close as 300 feet get service, these two towns are still waiting, though some have concocted home brew solutions. Locals tell us they were insulted when approached by Verizon to support "franchise reform," which all but seals their fate by eliminating build out requirements. They'v …

(Cue Soundtrack: Rolling Stones - Under My Thumb )(Scene opens on helicopter fly-over shot of mountain top as a horde of black masked women and one man wielding rolling pins, egg beaters, and wooden spoons spill over the peak) When we last saw our intrepid Daring Bakers they were celebrating victory over the puffed pastry, pate a choux, diplomat cream, and caramelized sugar of the St. Honore Cake .... (Scene fades to black as the fifty or so Daring Bakers dance the dance of joy in the setting su …

2007-06-07 08:44 Man stalked unsuspecting male jogger for 10 years
A man who spent 10 years stalking an oil worker in Aberdeen has walked free from court. David Leverett, 57, turned up in parks and in the city where his victim, Calum Davidson, went running. Aberdeen Sheriff Court heard that he became so fixated with the 37-year-old that he handed him a love letter. The court heard he had kept a photograph of his victim, cut out from a local newspaper. Representing himself in court, Leverett had previously said he "watched" his victim for a period of 10 years. S …
