2007-11-06 07:58 MAC - The Stylistics
Efter detta inlägg bojkottar jag nog MAC. Kanske. Lipstick In Vogue - Neutral mid-tone brown with gold pearlized pigments (Fros …

2007-10-18 10:39 BOOK REVIEW: Hell s Belles by Jackie Kessler
Reviewed by Angela Richardson Hell s Belles is Jackie Kessler s debut novel leading you into the underbelly of the world, which is literally Hell! Hell s Belles is all about the transition of Jezebel from powerful succubus, who could seduce the souls away from men, to a mere mortal. When Hell put a bounty on her head her only chance to escape a fate far worse than death was to become human and lose herself in a place where sinners walk hand-in-hand with saints a place like Belle s strip club i …

2007-10-16 19:40 Do Rock Concerts Count as Research
On Saturday, I saw the final concert in what is possibly the final tour ever for the rock band Genesis. Fantastic concert, fabulous band, great experience. So how, you ask, does a Genesis concert relate to the Regency In, oh, so many ways! Here are just a handful: 1. The founding members of Genesis all met while students at Charterhouse School, which Wikipedia explains is "one of the original nine English public schools as defined by the Public Schools Act 1868." (The other eight are Eton, Harro …

2007-10-16 04:15 Blog Tour of Mosaic by Amy Grant and fantastic Aussie giveaway!
Amy Grant's Age to Age album (vinyl record, of course!) was my first exposure to contemporary Christian music in my teen y ears and my sister an d I loved listening to it and dreaming about being just lik e Amy! So when I saw Mosaic, Am y's first autobiography I was excited to read it and I was not disappointed! Amy has rich ly yet conversationally told vignettes and experiences from her life, from charming tales to emotive losses and all the "st uff" in between. With lyrics to her many songs in …

2007-10-15 19:54 Could Huckabee be Mr. Right
Continuing on the recent theme of the Christian Right bolting the Republican Party comes this from Jonathan Martin at Politico.com, Social conservatives can stop looking for their perfect presidential candidate. There is one Republican who, given his credentials, would appear the likeliest to rally evangelicals and others on the Christian right. He is resolutely anti-abortion, supports a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and is a man of deep faith. He has been elected and reelected t …

How-to books are explanations of how to accomplish specific tasks written for non-experts. It's a diverse category, covering things like personal finance, diet and health, cooking, house and home, and personal development. 2007-10-13 15:52 Back in Business: The Bindis Go Bollywood
Amber, Jazz, and Geena are at it again. It wasn't enough that they got into loads of trouble last time trying to get rid of Auntie, and marry her off to their dreamy teacher, Mr. Arora. Now they've decided to be good, and do something to get on Auntie's good side. When they find out that Auntie's offered to help host a Bollywood party to raise funds for rebuilding their school, they can't resist putting in an oar -- strictly to help, mind you. Finding out that there is a Bollywood star living ri …

This post is playfully sponsored by: Romantic Gifts - Learn Something New About Your Lover! Find out how you can sponsor a post. I'm warning you right now - I'm not the most 'cultured' person when it comes to humor. Sure I enjoy talking to intelligently witty people and the grown-up banter of politicians (ha!)...but for some inexplicable reason the most asinine sexuality-themed funnies get me to chuckle every time! I'm a sucker for those ridiculous birthday cards with the big-boobed women and th …

2007-10-10 00:03 Google's Great Sputnik Logo Flap
Google the world s largest and most recognizable internet search engine has come under repeated fire over the past near-decade because of its stance on not celebrating Memorial Day in it's logo art; or at least, that s how the right wing conservatives of America are describing it. The internet giant have repeatedly redesigned their logo to celebrate special holidays and remembrances across the world, from Valentine s Day, St. Patrick s Day, the birthday of noted American astronomer Percival Lowe …

2007-10-03 19:59 So. October, huh
I don't want to complain, because really - things are pretty good. But I feel incredibly weird. Like there is some kind of correlation between free time and creativity, where creativity decreases with spare time. Or maybe it's just having the train of steaming ahead and me having no idea what the next stop will be, or if I'm even on the right track anymore. If I'm on any kind of track! I've been really appalling about paying attention to what goes on here on LJ lately, so if I've missed somethin …

2007-09-20 16:18 Cinematographicus: Rocketman
I take pride in being a film graduate who isn't afraid to not take the art of filmmaking quite as seriously as the stereotypical, snooty film student. Thus I bring to you my thoughts on a movie I recently watched for the first time in a long time: "Rocketman" (1997). This is one of those movies that you have to watch while your mom/wife is taking a nap or out running errands, because if they watch this over your shoulder your reputation may suffer some damage. Like "UHF" and the "Bill & Ted" mov …

2007-09-20 11:50 Mama Knows Breast
Ah...the joys of breastfeeding. Let's not mince words-breastfeeding isn't easy. It GETS easy after you've done it long enough, but those first few days and weeks can be a barrage of emotion. "Am I doing it right" "Is my baby gaining weight" "Will I ever sleep again" My personal favorite, "WILL MY MILK EVER COME IN" Mama Knows Breast, by Andi Silverman takes a lighthearted approach to telling first time moms the ins and outs of breastfeeding. Mama Knows Breast covers the breastfeeding basics, and …

2007-09-04 23:37 An emotional train ride with the critics
Yesterday, I was moaning over on the Yankee Racers about the initial reviews I had read. However, I responded to an e-mail this morning a bit differently, arguing that the negative reviews of TDL are rather formulaic and that all of Wes' films have received mixed reviews. So what However, good ol' leeroy offered an even better perspective : The negative review from Hollywood Reporter, and the positive review from Variety have been posted in the non-spoiler thread. Here's a positive review from P …

2007-09-03 13:32 ...of love's refrain
Went to see the movie "Stardust" last night. I have read the Gaiman graphic novels on which they are based, and they're in my house currently, but I did not choose to read them immediately before going to see the movie, so my memories of them are fuzzy. I think I will choose to keep it that way. I enjoyed the hell out of the movie, and I know I enjoyed the hell out of the books when I read them. And I remember enough to know that several details are significantly different, but it didn't bother …

2007-09-03 01:11 i'm back
Back from first (annual) all-church retreat, which judging from the fistful of evaluations I ended up with was a resounding success. Excellent weather (not that we controlled that). Well organized. Nice balance of activity and downtime. The main suggestions were minor things to improve, like having a place the early bird could make make coffee before breakfast at 8. Last night's fire alarm, which went off not once, not twice, but three times before 8 a.m., was a lowlight. Again, not our fault. P …

2007-08-31 21:49 Are you getting somewhere Or did you get lost in Amsterdam*
* Guster It's kind of hard to get lost in Amsterdam; it's small and walkable, and the roads are narrow and mostly one-way, and bikes are everywhere (yeah, city of bikes and all that shit, but nothing beats Copenhagen's organized, structured bike lanes - I'm a stickler for order, what can I say), and there are trams that can run you over if you don't look left and right at every major street before crossing. There are all these fat cats roaming the streets, and then running back to the coffeeshop …

2007-08-31 20:32 Socratic forum wrapup
I was going to write a post about the Socratic forum, but Sam Clifford has done it. Here's his summary of my piece. John Quiggin illustrated the States-Canberra issue with the analogy of a dysfunctional household in which dad earns the money and mum spends it (this is the GST). Dad is in charge of things like keeping the house safe whereas mum is responsible for raising the kids and cooking the food that dad provides. While I don't agree with this traditionalist view of the home (c. 1950s) it's …

2007-08-30 05:00 Three Best Football Chants Ever
One of my favourite things about "The Beautiful Game" of football is that the fans are some of the most creative people in the world. From a finite number of songs, they can change the lyrics to sing about their heroes/enemies in creative and funny ways that'd make Wierd Al Yankovic's lyrics seem insipid and boring. With that said, here are three of my favourite football chants ever. These three made me chuckle profusely, and - whilst I'd love to know all the words to "Sol, Sol, Wherever You May …

There s this great new meme going around and I just HAD to take part in it. Basically, a blogger interviews you, and you post the answers on your own blog. My dad wants to know if Kathryn ever runs out of words. The answer is no. For the past two weeks, Kathryn has been in Texas, staying with my parents, and not running out of words. My mom loves it. My dad has duct-taped two pillows together and wears them as a hat. I can't blame him; two weeks is a awfully long time to experience raw Kathryn, a creature whose energy level is only exceeded by the volume of her normal speaking voice. Every summer since we moved to New Jersey, Kathryn has spent a we …

AS and I (and much of our New York crew) spent a whirlwind "day" (we were there for less than 24 hours) in Wilmington, Delaware this weekend for the marriage of our friends M&M. We drove down with our friend Dan and his girlfriend Christine, avoiding most of the Jersey Shore traffic and listening to Car Talk and Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me. We also researched Commodore John Barry on AS's Blackberry while crossing the Commodore Barry Bridge. Car full o' dorks, people. When we arrived in Wilmington, …
