2007-11-05 21:26  Who really killed de Menezes
By David Aaronovitch (THE TIMES, 05/11/07): A couple of years ago I did my second stint of jury service at a Central London court. We ended up hearing a case in which a middle-class couple were terrorised one evening by a man who had decided, wrongly, that they were connected with an earlier argument he d lost with someone else entirely. There was a lot of punching, threatening and door-smashing involved, and the woman was still so scared that she testified from behind a screen so that the accus …

University life is still hectic but I'm getting used to it once again (when I'm completely settled it will be time for Christmas holls, clearly) and today I found the time to put Pride & Prejudice in my mp3 and now I can listen to Elizabeth and Darcy bicker all day long. *glows* Besides that, I felt like memeing, so here it is, pass by if you shall :) - * those you have read - + those you started, but didn't finish - # those you own Embolden those you loved - Add three books after the last one 0 …

2007-10-12 11:35  Nicole Livingstone & family in Toyota Kluger ad; expecting third child
Sports commentator/presenter and former swimmer, Nicole Livingstone and her husband Marty Smith appeared in the latest Toyota Kluger SUV advertisement with their twin children, Joshua and Ella, 5, as part of the "Are you Australia's ideal Kluger family" competition. The advertisement also revealed that Nicole is expecting her third child - her baby bump is clear in the original image but unfortunately isn't as clear in the scan below. Wikipedia tells me that Nicole has left for maternity leave f …

2007-10-01 20:36  Red Ken's Speech to Labour Red Army
Another very late Labour Party conference report. Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone s speech on Wednesday. Good solid speech. Who would believe the photo to the left a few years ago (no pun intended). He really enjoyed sticking the knife into his Tory Challenger, Boris Johnson. I must admit that while out jogging before conference I listened to Boris being interviewed on the "Today Programme" and was very surprised just how poorly be came over. Surprised, but pleased of course! I liked Ken's "qui …

2007-09-27 10:27  Some quick reflections on the mayoral vote
So Boris has won and won convincingly with 79% of the vote .  Victoria Borwick, previously the least known of the three candidates, came second. Each of the three defeated candidates made their contributions.  Warwick's manifesto was stuffed full of useful ideas.  Victoria's no-nonsense approach to crime would give London some of what Giuliani-Bratton gave to New York.  Andrew Boff's ideas for a more democratic London - with powers to recall the Mayor - will, I hope, find their way into Boris Jo …

Caroline Spelman: œI am delighted to announce Boris Johnson as the Conservative Mayoral candidate. Running a London wide open primary is a first in British politics. 2007-09-25 02:27  Dirty, Hairy Hippie Girls
They say you can tell a lot about a person just by looking at their car. Take me for instance, I drive a slow white van with transmission problems. That is exactly me. But you can also tell a lot about a hippie by looking at their hippie bus. If their hippie bus is covered with bumper stickers that say things like "No War" or "The Only Bush I Trust is the One Between My Legs", then they are a political hippie. If their hippie bus is covered with grass or some AstroTurf, then they are an environm …

2007-09-21 07:30  Warwick Lightfoot: 'Naive' Boris has the wrong policy on Livingstone's too costly PFI schemes
Warwick Lightfoot is a candidate in the London Primary to select the Conservative Candidate for Mayor of London. He is an economist and was Special Adviser to the Chancellor of the Exchequer 1989-92.  He believes that Londoners have been "fleeced" by the PFI schemes and calls for London to receive a fairer share of national revenues so that it can afford direct investment in new infrastructure for London. The Conservative Mayoral Primary and its hustings have shown the Greater London Conservativ …

2007-09-18 15:17  The Standard sends mixed messages to Boris' rivals
The Evening Standard is very critical of Boff, Borwick and Lightfoot in its leader today: "It sounded like a good idea at the time: the Tory plans for an open, democratic, X-factor-style mayoral contest to determine who would run against Ken Livingstone. In fact, this exciting approach delivered a line-up of candidates who, whatever their personal merits, are woefully unimpressive as heavyweight politicians. It must be painful for the Tories to consider how quickly Ken Livingstone would have see …

2007-09-12 22:31  Labour attempt to engineer another race row
One of the less edifying spectacles of tonight's Southwark Council Meeting was a co-ordinated attempt by the Labour opposition to manufacture a race dispute where none exists. The basis of the dispute was a response to a question at an earlier Council Meeting about the proportion of senior officers in the Council who are non-white. It has fallen from 17.2% in 2004 to 15.7% today. It emerged during the meeting, thanks to the persistence of Councillor Noakes, that Labour had no idea how many peopl …

Andrew Boff supporter Graeme Archer offers a light-hearted account of last night's hustings in Ilford. Our report of the first hustings is here .  Another hustings has been added to the schedule (Sidcup Sports Centre, September 19th). Hustings Round Two! Ilford here we come - but how to get there Wrestle The Candidate to the ground over his plans to cycle there - rush hour traffic on the A12 not conducive to elegant arrival. 2007-09-11 09:01  Samuel Coates: The first Mayoral hustings
Last night was the first and most central hustings for the Conservative nomination. Chaired by former London Assembly leader Bob Neill MP, the candidates each started with a five minute speech: Victoria Borwick told "the tale of two cities", not Dickens' comparison between London and Paris but a modern comparison between the crime rates of London and New York. Drawing on several statistics she explained that there had been an inverse correlation in recent years between the increasing rates of mu …

2007-09-08 08:54  Christopher Mahon: Londoners pay more but get less with Livingstone
Christopher Mahon, Bow Group Research Secretary and member of Hackney Conservatives, summarises a new Bow Group report on Ken Livingstone's record. The strange thing about Mr Livingstone s time in office is how little attention has been given to his track record.  The press tends to be full of stories on how the Mayor will do this or do that.  Perhaps this is not surprising, given the 173 press officers who work for him in one form or another. Our report out today aims to correct this imbalance. …

2007-09-06 12:45  Borwick calls for Tube strikes to be banned
Victoria Borwick has today tried to take the initiative over the chaos caused by Bob Crow's Tube strikes by calling for a ban on strikes in essential public services: "It is time to get tough with the militants running riot on the Tube. Ken Livingstone may talk tough, but as the ultimate boss of the Underground through Transport for London he has bowed to their outrageous demands too many times. Londoners are paying the price for his weakness in higher fares. Livingstone even put his one-time co …

I was going to call this post " I'm all right Jack " because this strike reminded me of the film of that name and also because I cycle to work and am therefore relatively unaffected. It is interesting to see that the old habits of the militant and unreasonable union leaders is alive and well in the form of Bob Crow, even Livingstone can't quite get he head around it. Luckily for him the Conservatives limited the worst excesses of the union's abuse of power or the whole of London's transport coul …

The RMT (Rail Maritime and Transport union) said more than 2,300 members would start their planned strike at 1800 tonight (planned to last 72 hours). The Unmentionables, Woolly Mammoth s incendiary season-opener, boasts one of the strongest companies to tread a District stage this year. Their comic timing is both tight and loose, like a well-rehearsed but highly instinctive group of musicians. But the real star is Bruce Norris s play itself, a screwball satire about imperialism, do-gooderism and hypocrisy. Set in equatorial West Africa, this jeremiad finds as much fault with supposedly altruistic relief workers who come to ease their troubled …

2007-09-03 09:48  Ken s Strike and Rip-Off London, Bad For Small Business.
Ken Livingstone, "our " Mayor of London, is presiding over a London that has become more and more small business unfriendly, at least that is how I see it. The latest is the 72-hour tube strike by maintenance workers, as usual both sides blame each other in this conflict and you can not find out what really is going on. The fact remains there may very well be a strike on as of this evening, which will in effect shut the tube down. This after years of poor service and continuous outages on the tu …
