2007-11-06 12:50  Blue Plate Special
It was another one of those Uni Watch red-alert moments last night, as about a dozen readers e-mailed me all at once and another half-dozen or so posted all at once in the comments section. The cause Jason Strudwick of the Rangers got in a fight and his nameplate came loose during the fisticuffs, revealing some nasty-looking adhesive residue on the underside. All of which is very entertaining. But here's my question: Since when have the Rangers been using nameplates I always thought they used di …

i know i've been sports-heavy lately, but that's where my mind is. it's been so long since the University of Missouri sported an exciting team that, you know, had a chance to win big games that it's been rather strange to witness the successes of this Tiger team. after the loss to oklahoma, the team is saying things like "we let this one get away" and "learned some things about what it takes to get to the next step." and they did let one get away. football is an inherently unfair sport, in my vi …

2007-09-18 15:00  Running with PAC: Week 3
Let's take our minds off the Utah disaster for a while and talk about the rest of the PAC-10. It was Cal State week for the conference as San Deigo, Fresno, and San Jose were on the schedule. This week also saw USC return to action in a feature match up with the Nebraska Corn Huskers. Stanford matched their win total from last season by smacking around bay-area wipping-boy San Jose State. They blanked the Spartans in a game between two west coast light-weights. Oregon got the honor of spanking F …

2007-09-07 14:17  NCAA Division I-A College Football Predictions 2007 Week 2
Note: For odds and rankings we use the College Football Prediction Tracker, Yahoo Live Odds and Sagarin Rankings at USA Today. There are some great games this second week of college football Thursday: Louisville was favored by 40.5 over Middle Tennessee State. We had it 51-24 for Louisville, who won 58-42. In spite of a great offense, that poor defense will hurt the Cardinals this year if they do not get it straightened out pretty soon. Oregon State was favored by 3 over Cincinnati, our selectio …

2007-09-03 20:29  NCAA Division I-A (FBS) College Football Preseason Rankings and 1st Week Performance of those Teams
Preseason 2007 USA Today Coaches NCAA Division I-A Football Rankings compared to 1st Week Performance 1. USC looked sluggish against Idaho (4-8 in 2006), winning 38-10 - certainly not deserving of a No. 1 ranking based on this performance 2. LSU beat Mississippi State (3-9 in 2006 and a 48-17 loser to LSU) 45-0 with superb defense 3. Florida beat Western Kentucky (6-5 in 2006 and a 48-12 loser to Georgia) 49-3 in a game called because of lightning with 8:23 left to play in the 4th quarter 4. Tex …

2007-08-31 20:56  Friday Morning Quarterback
A weekly primer. And gimme a break, it’s morning somewhere. - - - I guess it’s one thing to know how ugly a game can be, another to actually watch it unfold. Mississippi State in a microcosm: facing fourth-and-one just inside LSU territory, down a mere 10-0 in the first quarter, on one of its only somewhat positive drives of the night and desperately needing to make this makeable play, Michael Henig emerged from a key timeout and promptly fumbled away the snap. Later in the half, with the ball a …

2007-08-31 12:22  A Bulldog Tempts the Wrath of a Vengeful God, Part XI: Kentucky.
Good for y'all and everything, but all things considered, I'd rather Georgia not be the cause of stuff like this. Hometown: Lexington, Kentucky. Last season: Rolled to a fairly shocking 8-5, third place in the SEC; notched upsets over Georgia and Clemson (in the Music City Bowl). Hate index, 1 being Ben & Jerry's crème brulée ice cream, 10 being Hitler: Three and a half, maybe four. I know I should despise them for knocking us off last year, but one of the best bosses I've ever had was a Kentuck …

2007-08-30 19:54  Week one predictions
Predicting every game is a difficult task, but I think I'm up for it once again. These are guesses and nothing more. I'll probably be off on many, but I really don't care. It at least gives me something to do every week and offers the chance to make an even bigger ass out of myself when the picks are proven to be woefully off. And who doesn't want to see that So since the season kicks off in a few hours, I better get these picks in, here they are. Week One Thursday Games: Tulsa: 38 LA Monroe: 7 …

2007-08-30 13:04  "Both teams are in last place, so who cares about the trade"
As we near the end of the first season since the Rangers traded their hope for the future, John Danks to Chicago for Brandon McCarthy, both teams seem rather unimpressed with their haul in the deal. The Rangers wanted more from McCarthy, including the health and durability to take the ball every five days, and the White Sox seem to be growing tired of Danks inability to last longer than 5 innings. If nothing else, it demonstrates the difficulty in developing young pitching. It also demonstrates …

By Erik Brady, USA TODAY. Photos by me. BLACKSBURG, Va. Sports is often an amnesia machine, allowing fans a fantasyland for forgetting their troubles. That's not how it will go Saturday at Lane Stadium. Virginia Tech will use football to remember. "What happened isn't going anywhere," quarterback Sean Glennon says. "It's going to be part of this season. And it should be. The people who died, and their families, they deserve that." April 16 is shorthand here, the way Sept. 11 is nationally. It me …

2007-08-29 01:10  Season Preview: My Preseason Top 25
I absolutely hate preseason polls. The entire idea of a Top 25 poll is to rank, in order, the best teams in the country. However, when no one has even played a game it is often hard to have a real good idea on whom is better than whom. So, naturally, I am going to make one of my own. During the season, I view this mostly as just a 'power poll' of sorts, so that is how I will handle the preseason one too. I'm not going to predict records or anything and judge my rankings based off that, just goin …

Let's try to tease out some of the details. Assorted reactions to the resignation include these comments of politicians quoted by Americablog with more comments here. Gonzales does appear to be leaving under pressure and not by choice, despite Bush's evident desire to keep him around. Daily Kos lists a long stac …
