2007-09-30 13:17  The Spectrum
Last month, an unexpected but welcome invitation to speak on Journalism Ethics at the The 4th Spectrum Fellowship: National Campus Journalism Conference came. Since it was conveniently in the last week of the semester, I readily said yes even as I thought it would be a good opportunity to catch up on some old friends there. The Fellowship was held last weekend from Sept. 27-29 at the La Salle University campus in Bacolod. My talk was on day 2, right after Vim Navarro, who trained the student jou …

this is the fourth time that this email was forwarded to me. it was funny the first time I read it, and I still find it funny after reading it the fourth time, so i decided to share. written by a British journalist in 1999 while stationed in the Philippines, it is a funny anecdote about us, the Filipino. Matter of Taste by Matthew Sutherland I have now been in this country for over six years, and consider myself in most respects well assimilated. However, there is one key step on the road to ful …

2007-08-15 14:42  Touch of Grey
That's it. The weather's gone to the dogs. The rain's been pretty much off and on until today, where it pretty much rained all day. With the way the wind is blowing, it's even threatening to ruin my challenge of a lifetime on Saturday, as according to the Philippine Weather Bureau (PAGASA) bulletin, issued 5:00 p.m., 15 August 2007: At 2:00 p.m. today, Typhoon "EGAY" was located based on satellite and surface data at 420 kms east northeast of Virac, Catanduanes (15.7N, 128.1E) with maximum susta …

The first thing which comes to mind when someone mentions Iligan City in Lanao del Norte is the majestic Maria Cristina Falls which is one of the most replendent among the falls in the Philippines. It stands 320 feet high and is the veritable source of industrial power in the region. Trust me, there's more to Iligan than just the Maria Cristina Falls... There's also the two-tiered Limunsudan Falls which is the highest in the country that measures 870 feet and several other waterfalls which are a …

Most Filipinos have a story to share about their name (like where it came from Or why their parents have picked that name for them). And this is a common thing here in the Philippines. 2007-08-04 00:29  Google Shifts from Tagalog to Filipino
It's not news anymore that Google offers its search services in various languages to provide added value to users from around the world who would wish to search the Net using their native tongue. For so long, Pinoys had the option to use Google's Tagalog version versus the usual English. I say had because just recently, Google did some political correct changes by shifting from offering Tagalog to Filipino. I'm not sure when the change took place but it's now up and running.      Recently an old friend from Manila asked me a seemingly simple question: What and where is Mindanao My response was as simple as it could be, It is a beautiful island situated in the southernmost section of the Philippine archipelago. And to my surprise, he responded: Mindanao to be exact is the second largest island in the Philippines. With a land area of 102,043 square kilometers, it occupies one-third of the Philippines' total land area and is larger than a number of Asian countries like …
