2007-10-19 09:08  5-7 is good enough!
Okay, I'm treading on dangerous territory here -- but, whatever, I'm allowed to be kinda mean to Notre Dame this week -- so: everybody remember these Well, uh, check out Rakes of Mallow's prediction for the remainder of Notre Dame's season: I think we're going to be competitive at least for a while against Southern Cal, losing in the two to three touchdown range when everything is settled, which is when the real fun begins.  Everyone will be on watch for Navy to end the streak, then for Air Forc …

2007-10-13 05:06  Chapter 4: Everybody Dies
Chapter 4: Everybody Dies Six years before Jacob Mallow was a bright young man, the interviewer decided.  His eyes were wide and always searching, so he looked lost, but he would probably contribute to some graduate program in bioengineering just not this one.   The interviewer glanced at Jacob s folder and knew he wouldn t get in.  His test scores and grades were as exceptional as those of any plausible candidate.   Hell, he hadn t even heard of the St. Louis college Jacob had attended. On the …

2007-08-31 00:06  Gardens, Late August
August has been very unusually hot this year.  Usually August temperatures are in the 80's and low 90's, and we've had a few weeks where it often hit 100.  We're also in a drought.  Fortunately, however, Hillsborough has a big, new (i.e. our water rates are high in order to pay for it) reservoir so there are no restrictions on watering.  I've been trying to water moderately, though, but I do have to go out to water something every day.  So, gardening this month has meant watering plants in the h …

Yarn: Spritely Goods Sylph in Globe Mallow, less than 1 skein (approximately 3 oz) Needles: US8 / 5.0 mm Pattern: My own :) Finished Size: approximately 9 inches wide by 7 feet long. Comments: I really enjoyed working this scarf up, and if I knit another one, I will probably swap the left and right leaf panels. 2007-08-21 23:45  Insects (and other creatures), Part 1
Lately, We've enjoyed taking pictures of insects (and other creatures) in the garden (and elsewhere): Dear husband and older son found this toad. Daughter found a Cicada. Cave Cricket, or Camel Cricket. A cicada that older son and dear husband found. Cicada from the bottom. I watched him fly around the front yard all the way through breakfast so I had to get my camera and take a picture. Below:  A sulphur butterfly on the hibiscus. Coneflowers are wonderful for displaying insects (like this bee) …

Hello Toastandcupcakes fans! You may or may not know me - my name is Abraham Larsen. I have been given the honour of writing an update for this wonderful blog. If you're anything like me, you check out toastandcupcakes hoping for an update. If there's one thing you can say about Rhiannon it's that she is one busy mama. I'm telling you; from the first 'peep' of a bird in the morning until the last 'brrrrr' of a cricket at night - she is flat tack getting things done. Whether it's creating some ne …

2007-08-17 00:39  Report from the jungle
I just logged on and saw that I haven't posted since the middle of June. I missed July and August's Garden Blogger Bloom Days and, looking out at the garden, it looks like the blog is not the only thing that's been missing some attention. No excuses really but some explanation: We returned from a three-week trip late Tuesday and much of the month or so prior to the departure was consumed with trip planning and preparation as well as finishing up other (paying) work. So both the blog and the gard …

Hi *she said sheepishly* My last update was July 19th and I know what you're thinking..... Debi Who Yeah, it's been a wicked 3 1/2 weeks. It's been almost non-stop here since I finally finished reading Deathly Hallows. I promised myself I wouldn't go online or check my email until I finished the book because I didn't want to see any spoilers but that's because I thought I'd finish it in about 12 hours, which is my average. Boy, was I wrong! I will post my thoughts and favorite parts of Deathly H …

2007-08-09 02:44  Thirteen Things I Learned about Colors I was doin...
Thirteen Things I Learned about Colors I was doing some research on the names of colors and came up with some interesting trivia and decided to share. 1) Khaki comes from the Urdu word meaning dusty and is actually a sandy brown with no green in it at all. 2) The word green and the word grow both come from the same Germanic root. 3) The word red is related to the Greek eruthros (and where we get words like erythrocyte, which means red blood cell) as well as to words like russet, ruby, ruddy, and …

2007-08-04 16:46  The guessing game answer!!
Okay so no one got it right. I know it was tricky but that makes the fun worth. Well the greens that I used is known as Molokhia (Jute Plant) that I got from an Arabic store. I used the frozen ones as fresh leaves are impossible to get in US. Now, before you get too excited to get it, let me brief you about the taste and texture. This is the most slimy greens I have ever seen. The texture is viscous and gelatinous and is used mostly in soups with meat or chicken to give it a gumbo like texture. …

2007-08-03 20:32  A stitch in time
You lose things and you find things when you move house. I lost my temper, sleep and two dresses, both new, one of silk pink and red roses, the other, black, jet beaded and gathered at the hem. There are worse things to lose. And I found things too: my home, my mauve snakeskin sandals and a tapestry kit once my mother s. I am not a woman with a veil, a distaff and a wheel; have no pet sheep to shear and fleece to spin out yarn, then weave it into cloth. Unlike my mother, I do not sew, knit, pear …

Finally, I come back to the beginning of that walk on the south end of Boundary Bay beach. We parked on a side street near a gravelly walkway to the beach. Someone with more enthusiasm than persistence had been doing a spot of gardening in patches beside the road and along the walls. Dead daisies and live hollyhocks. A barnacled net float on a twig. Ah! Teasels! Once useful, now ornamental. Pink mallow. I think. The walkway opened out onto the beach. Sand flats opened up in front of us and to th …

Is it that time again already! Wow....summer flies right by and before you know it... it is time to think about sending your kids back to school. The local stores put out huge displays of Crayola crayons, pencil boxes, and backpacks. Parents and kids wander around with printed lists showing all of the supplies their teachers have requested for the year. In addition to the dent in parents' wallets, there are environmental and social costs involved in all this school-related spending too. Well, I …

Piping Plover (US Fish and Wildlife Photo) News and links about birds, birding, and the environment The Scotsman reports that removal of invasive tree mallow at a puffin colony has restored the colony after a series of disastrous breeding seasons.
