2007-10-09 17:29  Is this realistic for Utah families
For today, I probably should rename my weblog "Accessibility First," because I pulled out an old link to a Trib article that included a map of private schools in Utah. It reminded me that there are only 138 private schools in the whole state, and the vast majority of them are located in clusters along I-15 from Ogden through Salt Lake City to Provo. (You can see the map again here http://www.sltrib.com//ci_5060104 .) The caption in the map explains where the rest of them are. St. George and Park …

2007-09-01 17:35  happy september!
Things that ROCK: 1 - We got the keys to the studio, where we will be working and showing for the month, including the weekend of the SOWA Art Walk, which I could not be any more excited about. Really, it is ridiculous - I am bursting !2 - Two more mini-manti are done. Meet 1. Iris, 2. Wilmont. Also, there are 8 more minis in the works, which I am hoping to have finished by Monday at the latest. Perhaps I may squeeze out a few more before Open Studio, but for now, I feel that is enough mini-mant …

2007-08-28 03:49  Monday's With Maxine, the Large and Small of it
She almost does not seem real....this amazing growing Maxine.  This week she gained 140 lbs and is weighing in at 369!! Truly these fantastic vegetables must be the inspiration for Audrey II, that other giant, fast growing plant. Maxine and the little Rooster have been joined by one of Chris's daughters miniature Jack be Little pumpkins.  I hope the little Rooster is not afraid of heights! Chris and gang called me over to visit with another garden friend....Manter, not to be confused with Manti, …

2007-08-24 21:13  whew!
Six of the 14 mini-manti are now up at the shop. Please stop by and check 'em out. The rest are going to be available at the Open Studio in September. I'll post more info on the later, as we approach the date. For now, I plan to have a quiet weekend, taking care of stuff I have long-neglected: Bills that I paid and piled, letters that I need to respond to, fabric that I cut and need to sew, sketchbooks, post-its, and some important paperwork I need to fill out for October. I think it's at the ve …

2007-08-23 15:58  sometimes
Sometimes I have to remind myself that I have to do my own thing and not conform to whatever aesthetic, style, or theme is the prevalent one - to just keep doing my thing, translating my vision, playing with color, and creating something that will hopefully speak to someone. Sometimes that is easier said than done. It's hard to keep my focus and not feel bad about the fact that I don't want to make doughnuts with happy faces on them despite the tastemakers' adoration of this subject (and yes, th …

2007-08-21 18:06  i guess cutting is to sewing what rhyming is to stealing
Things have been busy here. Fourteen new mini-manti are in the works, in addition to the ones that are finished and just waiting for wings and detailing. Half of these will go to the Open Studio and half will go up in the shop by the end of the week. I was hoping to update the shop tomorrow, but with so much still in the works (and some other stuff that I am juggling in the background), I think the most reasonable thing to do is finish everything up and update on Thursday instead. Speaking of sh …

2007-08-12 07:07  Portraits of the Fallen ~ Kaziah Hancock
Long Day in America 1LT Erik McCrae Oregon National Guard Kaziah Hancock lives outside Manti, Utah on Sweetwater Goat Ranch with 100+ goats, some sheep and chickens. She is an artist with a distinctive technique. Motivated by the death of the first soldier from Utah, she now paints portraits of our fallen warriors for their families free of charge. 2007-08-12 02:31  hooray for hand-sewing!
For all the wonderful reasons Hillary has listed (have you checked out her fabulous new pattern-cards yet) and because it has afforded me the opportunity to spend a gorgeous day like today working outdoors. As Hillary said, it's fun and it's portable, not to mention highly relaxing. What else could one ask for in a project I have to admit, I've grown quite enamored with the little rose-colored bug (which at this point has little arms and wings attached). Usually, when I make a softie, the thrill …

2007-08-04 13:03  and they're up!
Well, the mini-manti are up in the shop. If I finish the two woodchucks I am working on now before 5 PM, I will post them then. I have so much stuff I am working on (squirrels, chipmunks, zaubermausi, jackalopes, stumpy bunnies, garden variety partiers, etc.) that I will be adding stuff every day for the next few weeks, even if it's only one softie a day. I wish I could do more, but I am only a one-person production team here. So if there is something you are waiting to see in the shop, please b …

2007-08-03 23:07  personal mythologies and symbols
Meet Ingmar and Brigitte! They were enjoying their little foray into the backyard earlier and will be up at the shop tomorrow. You can see more photos of this duo here. Did you notice their little "capes" I was inspired by a similar cape on this mantis here. (I totally love Igor's photography - the colors and the creatures are just amazing.) Now, I have to touch on something that I've been meaning to discuss for some time now. It's funny to gauge our friends' reactions when they come over and se …

2007-07-21 19:58  A, E, I, O UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTAH!
Yes, folks, I am in UTAH!!! Lots of land out here. Long road. Lots of Sun. Not much water. Snakes!! Scorpions!! I am heading toward Provo, Utah, on my way from Price, Utah. Long days of spinning the miles, upwards of 98 miles per day. I drank over 3 gallons of water yesterday! I finally met another cyclist again. We exchanged pictures and stories and went our separate ways. I am working as hard and as fast as I can to get to the end of the trek before I head to Vancouver on the 28th. If you look …

2007-07-16 16:33  and some progress has been made
If it seems that I am not posting much about softie-making these days, it is only because with all the coming and going, I have about 2 dozen or so projects in the works and no finished items to share. Everything has been so slow-going over here. Softies are suspended mid-construction, and new ones started spontaneously, swiftly, and surreptitiously as the inspiration grabs me only to be stuffed, finished, and detailed a week later. How many WIP photos can I show you without boring the pants off …

2007-05-27 01:39  Rat Fink Roundup
This Rat Fink Roundup is not to be confused with the up coming Rat Fink Reunion in Manti, Utah. This "happening" is at Outlaw Accessories in Keller, TX..just on "that side of the tracks". The whole shooting match is run by Frank. Two paint slingers hosted this pinstriping party, and laid lines & Finks of all kinds on bikes and cars this weekend. The two no accounts responsible for this outburst of One Shot are Ken "Mitch" Mitchroney ... ..and Greg "Coop" Cooper. ..both are certified paint dragge …

2007-05-21 02:46  Rat Fink Reunion 2007
Coming up this month...May 31-June 1, & 2 to be exact, will be the 5th annual Rat Fink Reunion on the Roth estate in Manti, Utah. It will be a three day event with custom hot rods, bikes, a parade, auctions, pinstriping, t-shirt painting, music, fresh Rat Fink merchandise and food. You MUST go and bring ANYTHING to be pinstriped by one of the many old pros that attend. Great people and atmosphere make it worth the trip, but you'll see Ed Roth's personal Rat Fink artifacts and craftsmanship up cl …

2007-05-08 18:09  The CEO
The phone rings yesterday afternoon and it is Mr. Rudolf, the CEO and President from the Biloxi Marshlands Company (BLMC). Apparently someone had forwarded my blog post to him and he felt there were some misinterpretations on my part based on the reading of the press release from the first quarter earnings release. I didn't ask him who sent him the blog since I figured he would keep it confidential. I made three points in my post. I will put the company's clarifications in italics. 1) Production …

2005-08-27 01:38  Uzbekistan
I am proud to have discovered this splendid restaurant as a visitor to Los Angeles, prior to moving here and reading "Counter Intelligence". My friend Adam and I were driving toward Guitar Center on Sunset and the lookout was somewhat bleak. I spotted the minimall sign reading simply "Uzbekistan" [7077 Sunset Blvd. 323-464-3663 Hollywood] and we immediately pulled in for a delicious lunch special. More high end than most of the places in my website but still a great value, Uzbekistan delivers th …
