2007-10-24 12:37 Riverbend bloggar igen
Riverbend bloggar igen. Hon har tydligen äntligen lämnat Bagdad och blivit flykting med 1.5 miljoner andra Irakier i Syrien. Läs hennes historia. Hon ger röst till en flyktingkris som världen idag inte verkar vilja se. Och lägga in hennes blogg bland dina bokmärken. Baghdad Burning Syria is a beautiful country- at least I think it is. I say œI think because while I perceive it to be beautiful, I sometimes wonder if I mistake safety, security and normalcy for ˜beauty. In so many ways, Damascus …

2007-10-23 02:26 Why an unregulated interchange model is crucial to fostering competition between payment schemes
Statements from regulators indicate that their focus is less on abolishing interchange than on exploring ways to deal with the variations in levels of fees in different markets and for different card products. EU competition commissioner Neelie Kroes recently said that while the commission would not abolish interchange it would continue to assess the legality of current fee levels. The solution usually evoked consists of some form of levelling of fees across the EU, through regulation which woul …

Hey, remember me Sorry for the blogsilence but I don t multi-task well under the best of circumstances, and lately blogging added just one chore too many for my beleaguered brain. Besides, I ve barely cooked a thing for days and I haven t read a food blog in months. The œwhy is Home Grown Indiana finally signed, sealed and delivered in duplicate (with an electronic backup) to I.U. Press last Monday.

2007-10-19 00:13 Heigh Ho, Heigh Ho, It's Off To Gilroy And Los Gatos I Go...
Hi All, Well, I am finally home and starting to digest all that the previous week contained. From hanging out with Mary Pope Handy and her wonderful family in Los Gatos, to Bloggers and Beer (where the Bloggaratti gathered), through Bloggers Connect and finally the long drive home, this has been one for the record books. Mary scooped me (With some of my very own pictures no less! Lois Lane could take lessons from Mary :-) but I shall nevertheless offer my rendition of the events. So, here we …

2007-10-18 06:36 Rome: In the Footsteps of Ceasars and Senators
The sun sets on the Forum. Strap on your sandals and join me for a walking tour of Rome... Walk along a sidewalk in Rome. It doesn't have to be a particularly noteworthy sidewalk; just about any will do. See the fence next to you Look over, and down, and chances are, you'll find ancient Roman litter. Rome, remember, was once inhabited by over a million people, and they left a lot of old stuff for us to look at. Time has covered most of it up, with over 20 feet of dust and detritus. But you will …

2007-10-17 20:46 What were you doing on 19 October 1987
Friday is the 20th anniversary of 'Black Monday', when the Dow Jones fell 22.6%. The FTSE All-Share fell 20% in two days. Most investors can remember what they were doing then and, for some, it changed their lives. Peter Lynch starts my favourite investing book, 'One Up on Wall Street', reminding readers: You can't bring up the stock market these days without analyzing the events of October 16-20. Mr Lynch was on holiday with his wife in Ireland: That night at Doyle's, I couldn't have told you w …

2007-10-17 19:00 Betting on Our Oil Demand
Waking up at five o'clock in the morning is easy for some people. Unfortunately, I'm not in that group. In fact, I can't think of anything more I loathe than waking up at the crack of dawn. Yet my routine is always the same, day in and day out, and the worst part of my morning is the drive to work. Slugging through traffic on I-95 during rush hour is an experience I hope you never have. Trust me, sitting in traffic that is congested for miles in both directions will give you a frightening insigh …

2007-10-17 18:07 Wednesday Food Blogging: Wild Mushroom Lasagna with Tomato Confit
From the jaws of disaster, a victory is snatched. A funny thing happened on the way to a lasagna. I managed to bring back a couple of porcini mushrooms from Rome. September and October are porcini season, so the markets had crates of huge porcinis. A couple are all you need for a dish, but one didn't quite make the trip intact, and when faced with a sauté pan, the other shrank into more normal mushroom size. Dried porcinis raced to the rescue, after a quick soak in hot water. Hurdle number one s …

2007-10-17 16:07 How the new global economy is the wild card in sustaining the housing markets
I was somewhat surprised to see very thoughtful comments on Monday's piece The Fed's housing market objectives ... all three seem to understand that the US economy and housing market has to be managed within the context of the global economy and other countries' housing markets... it's refreshing to see such thinking because the real estate community is so local, local and local and sometimes doesn't see the bigger economic picture that is driving their markets. Friend Dave G. at LakePlace offer …

I t appears both Apple Inc. s (Nasdaq: AAPL, stock ) and Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG, stock ) behave very well in the morning trading session today. So I ll just let it trade whichever direction it wish to. As blogged earlier, Google is expected to announce its earning tomorrow, Thursday 18th Oct 2007 after the market close. 2007-10-17 12:59 an interview with Kim Harrison
New York Times bestselling dark urban fantasy author Kim Harrison will be joining us Wednesday, October 24th, so I thought I would put her in the hot seat with a few of my notoriously nosy & intrusive questions... What is your favorite color Green this week. Favorite song œWhy Should I Cry For You by Sting. Favorite movie Right now That would be BLADERUNNER. And of course, favorite book DANDELION WINE by Ray Bradbury. What are you currently reading, & how are you enjoying it I just finished HO …

2007-10-16 23:59 What Resources Have Helped Your Trading
Once again, I'm going to tap the collective wisdom of the readership to see if we can generate a very useful post for developing traders. (By the way, I also want to express my appreciation for the feedback regarding trader strengths. I will be back from my road trip with traders tomorrow and will synthesize that feedback into a post for self-assessment). This time I'll ask readers to offer their comments to this post by recommending the trading books, websites, and other resources that have bee …

2007-10-16 01:28 The Role of Regret in Trading
Cognitive researchers emphasize that our emotional responses are mediated by appraisals: judgments about ourselves and the world. Two people might take the same examination. One feels capable and prepared; the other assesses himself to be incapable of passing. It s the latter student who will be likely to experience test anxiety. In that sense, emotion is an experiential barometer that connects us to our evaluations of events and situations in real time. One of the most fundamental appraisals we …

Another day I'd like to bring to your attention is... Today! Today is Blog Action Day: The Environment. Today is about raising awareness. It's about those little things you and I and your next door neighbor can do to make this world a better place. It needn't be complicated. You don't need to be stressed out about it. You don't have to do a lot all at once. Just promise to do something. Start with a small ripple; make big waves. Remember those Breck commercials In 5 seconds of tv-time, that woma …

2007-10-15 22:52 The Case Against Bobby Jindal
In less than a week, Louisianans will vote on who is best qualified to lead our State for the next four years. We face a monumental decision. This election does not simply represent a change in leadership; it also marks the first time Louisianans have had to make a decision about their state's leadership since the devastation of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. In her new book The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism, author Naomi Klein reveals a fascinating relationship between the natur …

2007-10-15 16:56 Supercapitalism == super
I bought this book because I heard it described on the radio (NPR, no less) in a way that made it sound like the dumbest book of the decade. It turns out that it was the summary, and not the book, that was dumb. Indeed, this is a fantastic book by an extremely smart and experienced liberal. It is the first book on the Corruption Required Reading list. A clue that there's something interesting here is that here a liberal is arguing (among other great arguments) that the corporate income tax ought …

2007-10-15 14:02 An Interstate Issue
The debate over the now hotly -contested interstate shipment of state inspected meat continues. Catching up if you haven't tuned into this debate yet, the House version of the 2007 Farm Bill included a provision to make allowances for state inspected meat that met or exceeded federal inspection standards to be shipped across state lines. The measure is intended to help open new markets to small and mid-size livestock producers. Follow the links above to see the debate that has erupted over the p …
