2007-11-06 12:50  Blue Plate Special
It was another one of those Uni Watch red-alert moments last night, as about a dozen readers e-mailed me all at once and another half-dozen or so posted all at once in the comments section. The cause Jason Strudwick of the Rangers got in a fight and his nameplate came loose during the fisticuffs, revealing some nasty-looking adhesive residue on the underside. All of which is very entertaining. But here's my question: Since when have the Rangers been using nameplates I always thought they used di …

2007-09-25 00:14  Why Talk Trash Through the Media
Let's recap. Last week Alabama defensive end Wallace Gilberry said the following in reference to Matthew Stafford: After the game Saturday, I can tell you anything you want to know - his birthday, his telephone number, his home address. I've got to know where to send the flowers after the game. So do you think Stafford will get any flowers this week I'm thinking no. My guess is the only Flowers Stafford will see this week is Thomas. Zing!

2007-09-24 12:11  Forgive Lloyd. Pardon Lloyd. Grant Lloyd Atonement for Never Running the Clock Out.
For those of you who have not had the intense pleasure of watching 12-13 Michigan games every fall for the entirety of Lloyd Carr's tenure, you may not quite understand the basic tenets of Lloydball. For the uninitated who haven't seen all 153 of Lloyd's games as coach in Ann Arbor, here's a basic primer: 1. Running the football is the preferred way to progress down the field. Passing is fun when behind, in long yardage, and/or to loosen up defenses, but the default call on offense should be a r …

2007-09-02 03:42  Where Have All The Cowboys Gone
Georgia - 35, Oklahoma State - 14. It's always great to win on opening day. Even better is doing so in a fashion that makes fans around the nation think you might be a little bit better than advertised. I didn't make it out to G-Day or to any practices so I was not quite prepared for the team speed Georgia displayed tonight. This may be the fastest team Mark Richt has ever coached between the hedges...particularly on the defensive side of the ball. I thought there were several plays where the sh …

2007-08-31 23:01  The 2007 HP Preseason Straw Poll
The preseason Heismanpundit.com Straw Poll has been tallied and the panel--consisting of Heisman winner Eddie George, plus nine members of the college football media--has Arkansas running back Darren McFadden as the strong favorite in the race to win this year's Heisman Trophy.

McFadden, who rushed for 1,647 yards and 14 touchdowns last season, holds a solid 18-point advantage over USC quarterback John David Booty in the weekly poll, the first taken so far this …

2007-08-31 17:40  Our Weather is Hotter and our Teams are Meaner
So sayeth Mr. College Football, who says that the ACC and SEC teams are not going to lose this weekend (except in obvious instances where they play one another). I like Barnhart, but he does play to his audience and that can cloud his judgment. He knows he can never go wrong by picking all the local teams to win, but that devalues his opinion. What further devalues his opinion is analysis like this: Oklahoma State at Georgia : This one s pretty simple. If Georgia can run the ball with that baby- …

by WCT, Wasting Company Time Its here. Its finally here. Like the first sip of water after an eight month trek through the desert, the first weekend of college football is upon us. Drink it in. 2007-08-30 17:05  The X-factor
Kudos to Marc Weiszer of the ABH for raising this topic. Often a game that is hyped as a showdown between units or players ends up turning on something else entirely. A great pitcher's duel turns into a slugfest. A basketball battle between dominant centers is won by outside shooting. Happens all the time. There are other people on the field, and the real opportunities and threats can come from places other than the matchups in the spotlight. Weiszer highlights OSU tight end Brandon Pettigrew as …

2007-08-24 19:31  SEC East prediction time
Bumped from the diaries. Pre-season predictions are the sports writer's equivalent of an entertainment writer making top ten lists, or a political writer predicting election results: a cheap trick designed to simultaneously make friends and enemies to drive up readership. Everybody knows they're B.S.... a weak and pathetic cop-out that continues to pass for insight, shelter for the unimaginative, a gimmick used to justify an unjustifiable existence. And yet, nobody can resist making them. Which …

2007-08-24 15:28  Blogpoll Roundtable 3.1
Who is overrated The easiest thing to do here is present The Hoosier Report's argument for Georgia : To some degree, my rationale for ranking the Bulldogs #5 (as opposed to #14 in the Blogpoll at large) is inconsistent with above. UGa returns only 3 defensive starters. Consistent with my other logic, the Bulldogs do return QB Matthew Stafford, who should be better ( of course, being worse would be almost impossible ). In the SEC East, even compared to defending champion Florida, I trust Richt's …

2007-08-24 04:00  Unsung Heroes
On a Saturday afternoon between the hedges, the red jerseys that little Bulldog fans wear usually resemble those of the team's most recognizable players. Matthew Stafford's number 7 and Thomas Brown's number 20 litter the chest and back of many a child, and you probably will see the numbers 3, 34 and 14 sometime during a gameday in Athens.

Here's the university's release: Georgia sophomore quarterback Matthew Stafford is one of 35 players named to the 2007 Davey O Brien Watch List, the Davey O Brien Foundation announced. The Davey O Brien Award, given annually to the nation s best quarterback, honors the legacy of former TCU quarterback Davey O Brien, the first player ever to win the Heisman, Maxwell and Walter Camp trophies in the same year. It is the country s oldest award for college quarterbacks. Stafford played in all 13 game …

2007-08-23 16:24  Blogpoll roundtable: overrated/underrated.
Brian proposed the following straightforward Blogpoll roundtable. Who is overrated I suppose at this point I should defend my ranking of LSU at #15. No other voter ranked the Tigers lower than #7, and a clear majority of voters placed LSU in the top 3. Frankly, I may move the Tigers up on my second preseason ballot next week, but still probably not as high as #7. Certainly, LSU has a bunch of talent. Saban and Miles have recruited successfully. Still, the Tigers are not the defending national ch …

Today was an awesome day, as it was the first true day off I've had in weeks. Seriously. At any rate, I figured I should post something just to have a post for the night. The subject came up yesterday morning with coach Richt about which starting positions are still up in the air. The ones that are most obvious are tailback, cornerback and receiver. Punter may still be up for grabs, too. Can't be too sure on that one. I feel pretty confident that all the rest are settled, but like Richt said, th …

2007-08-17 12:41  NCAA Football Preview - Georgia Bulldogs
OFFENSE: It is hard for any freshman to start at quarterback, let alone for an SEC team. That was the case for Georgias Matthew Stafford a year ago, and while he did experience some growing pains, the talented signal caller has all the tools needed to succeed. With 13 interceptions and only seven passing touchdowns as a rookie, Stafford has plenty of room for improvement, but he plays without fear and wants to make big plays through the air. He began taking better care of the ball toward the end …
