Jonathan Schwartz, Sun Microsystems VD. Just some random events happening before the Company Meeting this Thursday ( BEWARE Seattle drivers! Stay away from Safeco field! ). Are you, like, LisaB's BFF Well, no. The annual U.S. News & World Report college rankings came out yesterday, with my employer, Stanford University, placing fourth, behind Princeton, Harvard, and Yale. As I was looking at the rankings, it reminded me that when most of us think of going to college, we automatically think that the goal is and should be to finish the degree - that is sure what I want for my kids!  Certainly, that is the best goal in most cases, and there are more job openings for students who finish their degrees than …

After spending recent years opening up its software and embracing x86 hardware, Sun executives say the company is back. The VAR Guy remains skeptical, but here are five reasons why the company could attract stronger interest from partners and customers. 5. Betting on Big Blue: Sun's partnership with IBM could give Solaris some momentum on x86 servers, and potentially pressures Hewlett-Packard. 4. Big Sales Target: Sun hopes to build a $7 billion channel business by 2010, according to Cheryl Cook …

Sun's Microsoft Office workalike, formerly $70, suddenly materializes in the Google Pack download, writes Executive Editor Eric Knorr Two years ago Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google, and Scott McNealy, still CEO of Sun at the time, made a joint announcement that was notable for its lack of content. The first post in this two part series took a brief look at the challenge of managing our digital identities - what people see when they find us or our companies online. Way back in 1999, Sun Microsystem's Scott McNealy famously said "You have zero privacy...Get over it." But "getting over it" does not mean we have to adopt a laissez faire attitude to what is out there, about us, on the Web. In fact, once smart business owners realize that some version of their identity is very likely to be onli …
