The conceit of the project is to create a kind of "durable a …

Curiosity:    I remember first learning about blogs several years ago when a political commentator announced to those of us that subscribed to her email that she would now be writing a blog instead.  I didn't bother to visit her "blog thing". Months passed and then one day I decided to sit in on an Inman News  conference call about real estate blogs.  One of the guests, Ardell, said the magic words:  she got all of her new leads from her blog.       Commitment: At this point I didn't know a wi …

2007-09-04 11:15  Wakoopa, Frengo, Squidoo: Are Stupid Startup Names Hurting Silicon Valley
The search for a unique corporate name and identity may be backfiring in the Silicon Valley, according to an amusing article in Tuesday's Seattle Times. Wakoopa, Frengo, Squidoo or Meebo all might be acceptable on an individual basis. But when every startup in the Valley begins opting for whimsy (and a non-stop barrage of vowels) over, well, making sense, the results can be less than desirable. "Naming a company is like naming a celebrity," serial entrepreneur Jared Kopf told the Seattle Times, …

Chad Boeninger has a comprehensive post at Library Voice describing how to view your MeeboMe widgets while using Pidgin (formerly GAIM), thus obviating the need to have Meebo open in a website at all.  I haven't tried Pidgin in a long time, but would LOVE not to have to have a web page open in order to receive chats via the MeeboMe widget, so I'll be trying this one out.  In the comments, Caleb points out that "you can monitor MeeboMe with any XMPP client", which makes me think that Trillian Pro …

2007-08-28 18:12  Is Blogging Dead Or, the Psychology of Blogging, Part II
Mayberry Mom and I were discussing this question a while back, a conversation that was sparked by a post by Gwen Bell that proclaimed " Blogging is Dead (And Here Is Why) ." Now, before anyone gets all huffy, I do actually agree with a lot of what Gwen has to say. But no, I do *not* think blogging is dead. First, let's look at history. When radio boomed, everyone said print was dead. When television boomed, everyone said radio was dead. When cable boomed, everyone said broadcast was dead. When t …

I keep waiting for Facebook, or someone else, to announce "Face IM", an IM client that uses the social graph that I have already setup in Facebook to manage my IM life. Another IM system Well, they wouldn't have to run their own service, but could play the meta-role a la Adium/Trillian and use the IM names that the users have already put in. This would all be hidden from the users though, they would just start chatting to their friends. At some point it may make sense to setup Jabber so users wi …

Yeah, I broke down and got an iPhone. There are a couple of minor things that are a bit annoying - but that is to be expected. 2007-08-22 23:10  Google Mobile Search Jumped 35 Percent May-June; Reverses Trend
Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) has seen the use of its services via mobile spike by 35 percent from May to June, when the traffic normally drops in that time frame between 20-40 percent as people in the northern hemisphere go on holiday. Naturally, this is being interpreted as people turning to their mobiles when they're away from their computers. This rise in mobile traffic partly offset the traditional fall in computer traffic, although there are tens of millions of mobile searches on Google each day c …

Luckily my site is not about massive amounts of traffic (yet), so this is manageable, but I'm definitely happy with the results and I feel like it shows in yet another way that we staff are available and accessible.
