2007-10-15 16:56  Supercapitalism == super
I bought this book because I heard it described on the radio (NPR, no less) in a way that made it sound like the dumbest book of the decade. It turns out that it was the summary, and not the book, that was dumb. Indeed, this is a fantastic book by an extremely smart and experienced liberal. It is the first book on the Corruption Required Reading list. A clue that there's something interesting here is that here a liberal is arguing (among other great arguments) that the corporate income tax ought …

Sons of Sakhnin United was directed by Chris Browne, whose League of Ordinary Gentlemen (2004) focused on 10-pin bowlers. 2007-08-31 20:24  In Search of Memory:Towards an Understanding of Baladhur
In Search of Memory: Towards An Understanding of the Baladhur By Rabbi Eliezer Brodt In a recent post at the Seforim blog, while reviewing R. Ovadiah Yosef's recent work, Chazon Ovadia, I wrote as follows: "R' Ovadiah Yosef is world famous for his unbelievable memory, resulting in a tremendous bekius. I once joked that he must have had someone develop a computer program and attach it to his brain to help him retain so much information and recall it at all times." To this, one anonymous commenter …

2007-08-23 03:34  Conversion Standards
I missed this article by David Ellenson last week on conversion standards ( link ). In response to an article by R. Avi Shafran in which he stated that the unequivocal halakhah is that a conversion must include an acceptance of the Torah's commandments ( link ), Ellenson brings sources that contradict this thesis. He quotes R. David Tzvi Hoffmann in Melamed Le-Ho'il (2:83), who ruled regarding a pregnant Jewish woman's non-Jewish civil-husband that he should be allowed to convert. R. Ben Zion Me …

2007-07-28 15:49  A Trip to the Shomron
I'm posting my previous series on the Shomron (Samaria, aka "Northern West Bank") here as a single posting for linking purposes. The Ride to Shchem The Belzer Beis Hamedrash Hagadol was fun, but now it's time for another adventure into the Jewish heartland, the Shomron (Samaria; northern west bank.) At Machon Meir, the semester ends on Tisha B'Av (the ninth of Av, a day of fasting mourning for the destruction of the Holy Temple, which is coming up in just a couple of weeks,) so everyone came on …

2007-07-15 12:15  Reflections from: Cinema-Tech: "Brave New World" / July 10th in Jerusalem
"Speaking at Cinema-Tech" was the first reason I was in Israel last week. Looking back at my experience, I really enjoyed being a part of conversation at Cinema-Tech: "Brave New World" which took place on July 10th in Jerusalem. The event took a look at the effects of New Media on Filmmaking and brought together a very interesting and dynamic cross section of people. During my talk I shared my thoughts on the future effects of the Internet on TV and Film and gave an update to my evolving theory …
