But we ought not close our ears to its essence, which is that the West has placed its business interests over popular sovereignty in the Middle East for 80 years. 2007-11-06 14:11 Proposed expansion of EU terrorism law a threat to freedom of expression
It must be asked why the welcome proposals on "practical action to stem the use of explosives" have taken so long to be put forward The Commission should focus on practical steps to improve cooperation between the Member States instead of trying to impose sweeping restrictions on freedom of expression. As part of its latest package of counter-terrorism measures the European Commission has tabled amendments to the 2002 EU Framework Decision on combating terrorism. The proposed amendments [Proposa …

2007-11-05 21:32 Duff diplomacy
By Simon Tisdall (THE GUARDIAN, 05/11/07): Condoleezza Rice keeps pretty chirpy, but it was a gloomy weekend for US power and interests in the Middle East. Every way she looked during a flying visit to the region, hopes of progress turned to dust in her hands. From Pakistan to the occupied Palestinian territories, there is a sense of imminent unravelling born of misjudgment and long-term neglect. President-General Pervez Musharraf's "second coup" was a personal rebuff for the US secretary of sta …

2007-11-05 21:19 This is no basis for talks
By Azzam Tamimi, the director of the London-based Institute of Islamic Political Thought and the author of Hamas: Unwritten Chapters. See also Ulter's lesson for the Middel East (THE GUARDIAN, 05/11/07): David Trimble cannot be accused of lacking knowledge of what the Irish problem was about; he had been part of the problem as well as the solution. However, his lack of expertise on the Palestinian problem - which he admitted on the BBC's Newsnight recently - surely renders him ill qualified to i …

2007-11-05 21:07 The Iraq war has become a disaster that we have chosen to forget
By Madeleine Bunting (THE GUARDIAN, 05/11/07): "You think you are innocent, but you're not," said the British Muslim suicide bomber in the Channel 4 television drama Britz last week. As the compelling actor Manjinder Virk recited her suicide statement to camera, she went on: thousands of women and children are dying every day in Iraq and Afghanistan, and yet the governments responsible have been returned to power. Her assertion sticks in the mind because it goes straight to the heart of how we ch …

2007-11-05 12:34 Onward to Belm, the global network of social movements appeal to get out in the streets on 26th of …
Today social movements are confronted by a new phase in the capitalist neoliberal system's offensive. This period is characterised above all by a state of permanent global war. For most of the human race this war means recolonisation. Using the war on terror' as a cover, this war aims at controlling natural resources by pillaging peoples the world over. American projects in the Greater Middle East' and South America are the most visible signs of this. Nevertheless, they cannot cover up the fo …

2007-11-04 16:45 Rice s Bridge To Peace
By David Ignatius (THE WASHINGTON POST, 04/11/07): It's an unlikely recipe for peace: Take one unpopular Israeli prime minister still suffering from setbacks in Lebanon ; add one politically weak Palestinian president who has lost control of part of his territory; fold in lukewarm support from Arab states. Now, beat the mixture with an energetic secretary of state and cook over high heat. The diplomat in the chef's hat, Condoleezza Rice, hopes to produce something palatable in time for a big pea …

2007-10-31 11:46 Una infiel en Israel
Nonie Darwish habla para el JPost sobre Israel: You've been to Israel several times. In your view, how does it differ from the rest of the Middle East Israel really brings hope to the region. Israel is the only country in the Middle East that allows religious freedom. Even though it is the tiniest country in the region, it is not afraid to allow Muslims to have mosques to pray in; it is not afraid to allow Christians all these freedoms. It is really a credit to Judaism that it doesn't have the p …

2007-10-26 18:03 The Middle-East Beyond Conflict : Context, Dynamics and Outlook
Associating Middle East with conflict is almost automatic, although the connection is rarely explored in depth. What are the causes and consequences of the conflicts and what are their fundamental dimensions What are the possible solutions and which ones are feasible This seminar proposes an interdisciplinary overview of a region in the throes of profound disruption. It seeks to supplement courses currently available in Montreal universities by offering less frequently explored perspectives on t …

2007-10-25 20:19 Ulster's lesson for the Middle East: don't indulge extremists
By David Trimble, a Conservative working peer. He was formerly leader of the Ulster Unionist party, first minister of Northern Ireland, and a Nobel peace laureate (THE GUARDIAN, 25/10/07): Advocating the Northern Irish "model" has become a popular pastime. In conflicts as different as those in Spain, Sri Lanka and the Middle East, the key players are now urged to consider the undoubted success in Northern Ireland and follow our example. This is hardly surprising, but I am concerned about how tha …

By David Ignatius (THE WASHINGTON POST, 25/10/07): Here's a Lebanese group snapshot, taken in the land where politics is an extreme sport: In an elegant apartment building overlooking the Mediterranean, several dozen members of the anti-Syrian parliamentary majority are holed up under heavy security. The legislators are trying to stay alive long enough to elect a new president by a Nov. 24 deadline, despite an assassination campaign that has already killed several MPs who dared to challenge Syri …

2007-10-24 17:09 At last, consensus in the Middle East: all agree these talks are bound to fail
By Jonathan Freedland (THE GUARDIAN, 24/10/07): It takes a special kind of genius to unite the warring parties of the Israel-Palestine conflict, but George Bush may just have pulled it off. His proposal for what the US administration calls a "meeting", rather than a peace conference, in Annapolis, Maryland, before the end of the year has elicited a unanimity unheard of in the Middle East. From the hardmen of Hamas to the hawks of Likud, there is a rare consensus: Annapolis is doomed to failure. …

2007-10-23 18:23 America's war without end
By Simon Tisdall (THE GUARDIAN, 23/10/07): Planned US spending on the "global war on terror" is set to rise sharply in the coming year, despite claims from the president, George Bush, that al-Qaida is on the run in Iraq. A funding request sent to Congress this week seeks $196.4bn (96bn) for counter-terrorism in 2007-8, $25bn up on this year. The Pentagon's separate budget request amounts to an additional $481.4bn. Justifying these whopping increases, Mr Bush repeats a favourite mantra, that "Am …

This months copy of Business 2.0 magazine features an article to help one navigate the real estate markets pending 'bounce back', identifying 10 cities primed for pumping (I'll disclose them in a minute). What the core of the article is about, is a tried and true investing practice that I've mentioned here before, yet seems to escape the minds of the statu-quo reader out there: nocopeemee If you want to make money on a commodity (like property) you must buy it lower than you sell it for, in shor …

2007-10-23 15:10 Illusions of control=dangerous
From a systems point of view, I am almost always interested in situations where executives or government officials lose control by seeking it. The classic now is the Iraq war, where Bush/Cheney thought they could spread democracy across the middle east by focusing on one small autocratic nation, Iraq. The plan was to "seed democracy." On the other hand, they did not trust the local people. So they worked with the local leaders–some but not all–to create a hybrid of autocracy and demo …
