2007-11-06 12:50  Blue Plate Special
It was another one of those Uni Watch red-alert moments last night, as about a dozen readers e-mailed me all at once and another half-dozen or so posted all at once in the comments section. The cause Jason Strudwick of the Rangers got in a fight and his nameplate came loose during the fisticuffs, revealing some nasty-looking adhesive residue on the underside. All of which is very entertaining. But here's my question: Since when have the Rangers been using nameplates I always thought they used di …

2007-10-11 14:51  QOTD - Dishes
Today's Question of the Day is all about the dishes you use at your home. This is a topic that is near and dear to my heart, yet terribly conflicting for me! I love dishes and dinnerware; I have no idea why. If I had the room, I think I would have at least 2 sets to use everyday, and some seasonal ones as well. As it is, I barely have room for the everyday dishes I do have and use. My "good china" is a set of fine china that I inherited from my grandmother, and I have never even used it. (It's p …

2007-08-30 03:41  Half-Nekkid in America
I guess by now you've heard that the lovely Tess of Urban Gypsy fame was in Seattle this past week. I'd chatted with her the previous week and & I had hoped to meet up with her. If she'd come a couple of weeks earlier or a couple of weeks later, we'd have been on holidays and it would have been easy.  If she could have met us in Burlington on Monday or if we could have met her in Seattle on Thursday...if a cats ass was square, he'd shit bricks. Oh well, it sounds like she had fun and this post i …

2007-08-29 22:25  Here, in Yokosuka
A, D, and I arrived last night here in Yokosuka, a place not mentioned in any of the guidebooks we've seen, about 25 km south of Yokohama. I want to see the battleship MIKASA memorial ship, to go together with my visits to AURORA and OLYMPIA, other museum/ memorial ships from the era, and A&D have a visit to a temple planned.  We`ll proceed to Yokohama separately, and rendezvous at the convention. Another tourist site here is Verny's steam hammer.  It's also a US Navy base, and I suspect that's …

2007-08-13 17:38  Next Time I Will Stop
On the way to Ohio, we passed 4 billboards that announced the Warm Glo Candle Company. It amazed me that this was a great place to visit and it was on my way! I have driven hundreds of miles to visit places of interest like the Mikasa and Oneida Outlet stores. This place is right off the highway that leads to Greg's apartment. I'm sure I will get to stop there at least once in the next two years!

2007-08-06 11:59  A Cold Meal
Well, Ms. A.'s Sunday Soiree is over and done with. The cold meal worked out very nicely and the birthday girl was not disappointed. Ms. A. slaved over a hot stove and oven on Saturday (mostly in her nightgown!). Salmon was poached, rice was made, asparagus blanched, and a tomato/corn salad was put together. With everything done and in the fridge, this lazy lady crawled back into bed in her air conditioned bedroom and had some quality snuggle time with her favorite visiting dog. The menu posted …

2007-08-05 08:39  Because she asked............
Deborah wanted me to post some photos of the fireworks. Only problem was-I did not take a camera. So here are some U-Tubes of last year's fireworks. I was there, but trust me, the guy doing the smart-ass commentary is not me. I have no idea who did this or where they were standing (Actually it looks like they were over near Mikasa Park...). Enjoy: The video that follows is from the 2007 Sumida River Hanabikai-Tokyo's biggest, which usually draws over 150,000 people. I missed it the last few year …

2007-08-04 16:31  Holidays are getting closer...
Hey the holidays are getting closer and closer and I have decided what I want to buy my family for presents, of course these things are not cheap at all, but one can get them a lot cheaper with online coupons I just found a place [ oneshare coupons ] where you can buy a share from a company, and not just any company, companies like Disney, Apple and many others, plus you get the start up kit for free! So that would be a great present for my brother, a framed share from Apple. I would also like t …

2007-08-02 19:09  Thrifty Thursday
Ms. A. missed a post yesterday. Life is busy -- a big professional adjustment is underway (all good), which took up most of the day. But even a busy professional can't give up her Wednesday lunch excursion to the Army. Two cotton nightgowns were found at half off, but the piece de resistance was a large Mikasa Duplex Platter in a daisy pattern. This plate is to die for -- almost too pretty to cover with food! $2.99. Today was a Goodwill day. A lovely fold of upholstery fabric was found for two b …

2007-07-14 00:49  Discount Shopping At Webbyplanet
Since I had just wrote about shopping with online coupons a couple of days back, I've came across another site called Webbyplanet for discount shopping. It is actually an online community where you can find online COUPONS, products, sales, reviews, and rebates. Webbyplanet's main goal is to help consumers save money by finding coupons, sales, special deals, free shipping and more. To ensure that you can get the latest best deals online, staff and forum members update the site throughout the day …

2007-06-24 13:12  12.00 and 2 Sales Later
It's amazing what one can do when you set your mind to it. By 9:30 yesterday, I had taken a shower, got dressed, went to Starbucks, travelled around town, got lost in a very ritzy but confusing area of town near the famous Pinehurst #2 Golf Course, went to 2 yards sales (I found more than enough treasures between the two to be satisfied), went grocery shopping (saved 35 dollars but spent 85 doing so), and picked up my son from his stay with his Daddy. All by 9:30. We returned home and I had a fe …

2007-06-08 19:05  Miss Match
First, I will tell you that I REALLY glad it's Friday. What a week! Whew! Second, thank you all for your thoughts on yesterdays question of a thrift barter site. I'm going to see what I can come up with. I've considered creating a "council of elders," if you will, to sort of hash out the details. If you are interested drop me a line. Basically it's just a group to throw around ideas on how to make a site of this nature work. :) And thanks also for your list of thrifty wants! Make sure you visit …

2007-05-22 20:38  Other Pursuits
I used to frequent thrift stores fairly regularly, and then something happened (kids, maybe) and I stopped doing it. Seeing other people's finds on the blogs and on Flickr has reminded me how much I like to browse around for unique and cheap things! Mostly what I like to shop for is dishes. I have this thing about dishes. It might be hereditary, because my mom has it, too. (She doesn't thrift hers, though. When my parents lived in Luxembourg, she got them at the Villeroy & Boch factory store. Th …

well, I have decided that I absolutely hate my life. I have a shitty job and a shitty boyfriend that cant make up his mind one way or another as to if he wants to be with me. Thats great huh I let him do whatever he wants and all I ask is him to call me if his plans change. Thats not to hard to do. Like last night, they have been doing these little parties at Mikasa and he is helping to "dj" them with one of his friends. Well, he normally comes right home afterwards. He decided that he was going …

2007-04-14 22:06  Thrift store bonanza and a Power Ranger
Grab bag of fabrics and the next couple of patterns I will try for more Etsy clothes. Wool sweaters that I now buy obsessively even though I can't think of much to make besides Betz White's pincushions, which, of course, I cannot sell. Postcard that some of my grab bag of trim was wrapped around. It is from Panama City 1960 and has a 3 cent stamp. Sent to people in Gallatin, TN (I have been there!) More trim (I cannot stop!!!). Four Mikasa plates. My almost four year old in the "Power Ranger" co …

2007-04-02 19:40  Hoodie: The Not Quite Pac-Man Hoodie
Underground label Mikasi has turned their "Thought Man" character into a Pac-Man -esque design for one of their latest hoodies. Instead of dots, it's money bags. Instead of ghosts, we get "money hungry b!@tches" to quote the garment. Streetwear cliche to the max Totally. A burning eyesore Definitely. This kind of garish gear isn't really my speed, but maybe some of our more daring readers will find the right location to rock it. And if $110 is too rich for your blood, a slightly more subtle shor …
