2007-10-21 08:52 Fun With Tisza
Tisza Major-Posner drove up to Los Gatos from Claremont last Sunday and we had a chance to show her around our fair town on Monday. Thought the Active Rain and Project Blogger community would enjoy seeing a few photos of our fun in Silicon Valley and Santa Cruz.... Enjoy! Our home sits at the very base of some foothills (which enjoy a view) and to begin our introductory tour of Los Gatos, I drove Tisza (and my daughter) to the top. Normally you can see not only downtown San Jose, but all the w …

2007-10-14 05:07 Distracted at the Creation: Washington s China Policy - Christopher P. Twomey
From MIT Center for International Studies website: U.S. China policy in the beginning of the twenty-first century is greater than the sum of diplomatic initiatives and presidential statements. Since China s rise is reshaping global politics, U.S. policy should be evaluated in this larger context. Washington must not only handle its relationship with China on a day-to-day basis, but must also lay the foundations for a long-term response to its rise. The Bush administration came to office primed t …

2007-10-13 02:52 New York Sun Crossword Puzzle 10-12-07
Just so I don't forget how, I thought I'd blog "Endnotes" by David Sullivan. A tough puzzle but with a clever payoff that makes the work worthwhile. When you're faced with a toughie, it's best to fall back on the classic rules of puzzle solving. Rule #1 I think is "Fill-in-the-blank clues often give you the best chance of gaining a toehold." That was certainly true here where 41A: "____ Loves Mambo" (PAPA) and 27D: ____-Hartley Act (law governing unions) (TAFT) were the first two answers I was a …

2007-10-12 00:05 Richard Branson on Space Travel & the Environment
"In the long run, a single-planet species will not survive. One day, I don't know when, but one day, there will be more humans living off the Earth than on it." NASA director Mike Griffin, quoted in "Mars or Bust," Rolling Stone, 2006. Richard Branson is a man after Mike Griffin's heart. True space travel might well end being pioneered not by the government owned space agencies, but by bold entrepreneur's like Branson and Microsoft co-founder, Paul Allen. Like some larger-than-life Elizabethan c …

2007-09-27 13:22 My trip to the United States of America
We left our home at 2 o clock am, Saturday October 22. We were going to California, USA, for two weeks and we were very excited. We traveled down to Copenhagen by car and then we switched to an airplane. The first flight took two hours and had its destination in London. At the Heathrow airport we changed flight to a bigger airplane. This flight was going to take about eleven hours and thus we were served both drink and food along the way. We also had the possibility to watch a movie on the small …

2007-09-06 10:38 The California Coast as crucible for our environmental consciousness
This article is a version of a speech given at the CIB anniversary dinner, September 16, 2005 I was born and raised on California s treasured coast, specifically on the Monterey Peninsula. I am thankful for the geography of my youth; the landscape of the coast and the Central Coast in particular continues to inspire and nurture my spirit in many ways. Here, I find not only inspiration but also purpose; here, on the Central Coast, my life has meaning and focus. Clearly I am not alone; in fact, I …

Great White Shark: Wikipedia.org Anyone who's done a bit of world travel can tell you, there's a lot of stuff out there just waiting to attack you, eat you, or make you sick. Or at least it seems that way... Just last week a surfer was attacked by a shark in Monterey Bay, California. However, California isn't the only place you hear about shark attacks. Most travelers know to be aware of sharks from Brazil, to South Africa, down to Australia, and the South Pacific. But just how real is the shark …

Got into Monterey late Monday night and went to the restaurant and read some interesting research while I ate alone! I kinda felt naughty, it was fun, wondering if any of the other diners were going to see me the next day and say, "Hey..." Then Tuesday a.m., I got a long run in after some calls. What a blessing a long ocean run is. I went downstairs to borrow some music and I only found Barry Manilow, LOL. After 4 miles, I was convinced that the man was a genius relative to human behavior. It's not just the 3,378 miles that separates the auction at the Owls Head Transportation Museum from its tonier counterparts that take place on the same weekend in Monterey, California. That was a point not lost on the hundreds of bidders and spectators shivering in the aircraft hangar where the auction was held.
