2007-10-24 21:15  Dmocratie, Droit et Intimit : Vers une histoire morale de l'Europe d'aprs-guerre
The workshop explores how Germans and Europeans freed themselves from the experiences of mass murder and mass death, and how they came to embrace democracy as a way of life. The concept directs our attention to how central conceptions of morality, moral passions, and moral practices were to the search for democracy in the shadow of violence. We are less interested, in short, in revisiting the political effects of the economic miracle or of American military and cultural presence, than in opening …

2007-10-19 16:30  What do our troops know that Bush's 30% does not
The few people who continue to support the Iraq war and claim that we're finally turning things around ("this time we mean it!") point frequently to anecdotes from soldiers over there who are privy to more information than we are. Blog-neighbor Mark has pointed to troop reenlistment rates as a proxy for troop morale as a proxy for evidence that things are going well, presumably because less indirect evidence is difficult to find. I wonder what they'll make of this From January through September, …

Didier Drogba says he wants to leave Chelsea because Jose Mourinho's departure has shattered morale at Stamford Bridge, according to reports in France. The 29-year-old Ivory Coast striker was devastated when Mourinho left the Barclays Premier League club last month in the wake of the breakdown of the Portuguese manager's relationship with Roman Abramovich, the owner. Drogba believes the damage to Chelsea's spirit has been so dramatic that it will be hard for them to get back on track, making it …

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission reminds hunters that responsible and ethical behavior influences public attitudes toward hunting. "I consider every hunting trip as an opportunity to be a good ambassador," said Wyatt Currin of Youngsville, in Franklin County. "How I conduct myself reflects not only on me, but hunters in general.

2007-10-17 05:45  Will Russia now defend Iran
President Vladimir Putin who is on a state visit to Tehran has issued a warning to the USA not to attack Iran. Putin stopped short of offering a security guarantee to the Iranians, but the fact that he went to Tehran and spoke out so strongly is almost certain to raise morale amongst Iranians, whilst at the same time giving cause for concern to the warmongers. As Neil Clark points out, what is needed is a defence agreement between all those countries that are opposed to the further advance of gl …

2007-10-16 21:59  Patriot Missiles So Bored They're Firing Themselves
The utter lack of action has left the multi-million dollar defense missiles so bored, they are launching themselves at nothing. Al-Jazeera reported that a U.S. base in Qatar "accidentally" fired a Patriot missile at a farm in the Gulf Arab state. The U.S. military is investigating the missile launch, though they are claiming it was an "accident." This is just a cover-up. Patriot Missiles, which were ineffective in the last Gulf War, were just dying to redeem themselves with this new war. What th …

2007-10-16 21:47  Now we can talk even more about Think Pink and Pinching
This might win the award for media quote of the decade: Right now, said another U.S. official, who declined even to be identified by the agency he works for, the data are "insufficient and difficult to measure." It's out of context - obviously, but hell, that statement doesn't require context, it's utterly meaningless anywhere. The mind reels with the possibilities. But it came from a WaPo piece (co-authored by Tom "Fiasco" Ricks) quoting various unnamed officials on whether or not al Qaeda in I …

2007-10-16 11:41  Playing The Game Or Fraud
Pay-Per-Click in whatever guise you take it has to be the easiest way of making money online. For most people it may not be the best way of making lots of money but when it comes to giving you a morale boost there is no easier way of earning a few dollars. It's no surprise then that as Google sloooowly leans more towards an action based model for Adsense there is no shortage of new PPC brokers trying to get you to show ads for them. I only hope they're properly prepared. Back in the day when …

2007-10-15 18:20  An egregious example of press laziness and distortion ... torture.
Thank you Judge Napolitano for the impetus on this one. A few days ago the 'Judge' in Brian and the Judge when considering the legalities and technicalities of torture and it's definition remarked in a question to a listener that Harry Truman tried people for waterboarding. This got me thinking, since as an icon to me anyway, and as a paragon of common sense, american ideology and liberalism, if waterboarding was in Harry's mind, torture I wanted to know his reasoning and the details. Well here …

2007-10-13 18:06  You can have one. Just don't be one.
In the comments section of this post, Stacie mentioned that she had seen a book in the library about working with assholes. With Google being one of my closest friends I soon found out that there is in fact such a brilliant book. It is called The No Asshole Rule by Robert Sutton .Shocking (not so much) that there was a wait list at the library for this book. I lined up in the virtual queue for this and got to experience my 'Christmas many times a year' feeling that I get every time I get that ma …

Before I became a Barrister, I worked for the NHS for 15 years. I started when I was 16 as a general Porter in my local hospital. I later moved to the A&E where I worked as an Orderly and underwent training to become an Anaesthetic Technician. I spent many years as a shop steward for NUPE fighting against the numerous cutbacks under the then Conservative Government. There were many bad times, but one of the most heartbreaking, was when the cleaners in my hospital were privatised. On a Friday in …

FOB TOMBSTONE AFGHANISTAN Soldiers and Sailors stationed at Forward Operating Base Tombstone took the initiative to organize their own Shadow Run to support the official Army Ten-Miler as well as the wife of one of the runners, Major Brian O'Neil. So with no bibs, no t-shirts, no timing chips or finisher's coins, but with lots of heart and enthusiasm, this group of runners set out to run what turned into an 11-mile course. The scenery consisted of sand, fence lines, and guard towers, but none of …

2007-10-10 16:00  I Nominate Manny Pacquaio To Be The Philippines Flag Bearer In The 2008 Olympics Opening Ceremony!
This is the first time you'll ever read this proposition anywhere! When one thinks of the flag bearer for one's country during the opening ceremony of the Olympics where the countries' athletes and sports officials are parading on the Olympic grounds, one can only think of that person as the embodiment of the country's sports aspirations. The flag bearer is the best athlete in that country ( although not necessarily participating in the Olympic games ). For the Philippines, it would be the boxin …

2007-10-10 01:26  Why Tassie
Of all the seats in all the regions in all the States in the country, why is Howard spending his time and your money in Tasmania, where there's only 2 Coalition held marginals to defend A few reasons come to mind - the most obvious one being that with Tasmania, the government can try and buy a whole State for the price it would take to buy just a single Sydney marginal, especially with the high expectations of government pork in those more demanding urban climes. The metro mainland marginals dem …

I had a career in Mary Kay Cosmetics for a few years. I had success fairly quickly, earning a free car five months after signing my Independent Beauty Consultant Agreement, and becoming a Sales Director just two months after that. I loved the Company's philosophies of God first, family second, career third; living by the Golden Rule; and making our success about the women, not the makeup. I met outstanding women, and traveled all over the country for seminars and conferences. I learned from very …
