2007-10-18 02:35 Gibbons searching for allies as he asks for tough cuts
By J. Patrick Coolican Published in the Sun on Oct. 18, 2007 If there were ever a time when Gov. Jim Gibbons needed lots of political friends and allies, it would be now. The housing economy has stalled, in no small part because Nevada for nine months has led the nation in a surging number of foreclosures. Unemployment has reached 5 percent, which is above the national average. And, of immediate concern to the Republican Gibbons, state tax revenue continues to come in below expectations. In Sept …

2007-10-16 01:36 'Women's Murder Club' focuses on four friends
The first thing to know about "Women's Murder Club," ABC's newest entry into the crowded crime-procedural genre, is that it's as much a chick-bonding show as a murder-solving one. Based on the characters in a series by author James Patterson -- whose "Murder Club" books have numbers in their titles, as in "1st to Die," "2nd Chance," etc. --the show centers on four women whose jobs happen to bring them together around dead bodies a lot of the time. As Lt. Lindsay Boxer, a homicide detective, Angi …

2007-10-12 18:59 Hockey is Not War....
..and that's where the problem lies. "Let s pretend we re somewhere else. Let s pretend its 3:17 AM on a Tuesday, and we re sitting in a bar. Not a club or anything fancy, just a very ordinary neighborhood tavern type thing (if your neighborhood bar isn t open at 3:17 AM on Tuesdays, you live in the wrong neighborhood). Let s pretend we ve been drinking quite a bit for quite a while and chatting drunken-style about all sorts of things. Maybe I serenaded you with my very moving version of Rex s B …

2007-10-11 14:57 The ungovernable city
You should all read David Freddoso's brilliant, angry, hilarious piece on the DC gun ban. I hope that now you can understand where I am coming from when I read District of Columbia Attorney General Linda Singer s hysterical court filing in the Heller case, which may strike down the District s 31-year-old comprehensive ban on gun ownership. Whatever right the Second Amendment guarantees, wrote the District s chief law enforcer, it does not require the District to stand by while its citizens d …

I updated my Project365 blog last night, and it seems that I'm doing more blogging over there than here. Go figure. I assume that once this project is over, I'll go back to more "normal" blogging here, whatever that means. I'll go back to posting photos here, and talking about what we are doing or did. I just don't seem to have an interesting enough life to maintain entries on two blogs Let's see... I blogged here and here about what all we did over the weekend. This past weekend had a lot of go …

2007-10-01 06:59 WHEN THE DEVIL WENT DOWN TO KANSAS
Admit it, each of us with an interest in history s landmark crimes has that one horrific tale that fascinates above all others. For some it might be the case of Jack the Ripper, for others the murder of the Black Dahlia or maybe the assassination of President Kennedy. Notice the connection Each remains unresolved, fodder for ageless speculation and theory. It s what lends to their shelf life. For me, it is the long ago deeds of a family that would come to be known as the Bloody Benders Before Tr …

2007-09-28 22:24 Garden Bloggers' Book Club - Thyme of Death
I enjoy mysteries, and some of my favorites are the kind that come as part of a series, with an amateur detective as the main character. For the Garden Bloggers Book Club, Carol has invited us to read a mystery connected to the garden - a sub-species of the mystery that may have its origins with Agatha Christie's Miss Jane Marple and Jane's garden-mad friend Dolly Bantry. I considered reading the official choice, but decided instead to make the club a reason to buy another volume of the China Ba …

Mm. I got a haircut. I also bought mom's, for her birthday. 140$. I dropped 200 dollas today, yo. We went to Target and I bought an obnoxious amount of clothes. Srsly. I'm on the rag, and still feel fantastic. It's cause she cut most of my hair off. These pictures were taken by mom really fast, so they aren't really that flattering, but they do the trick. She thinks all pictures of me are flattering. Tehe. In other news...since when did I have breasts :o XTREEEEEEEEEEEME CLOSE-UP!!!1 Last time I …

2007-09-25 14:07 Hoorah for TV!
If you've visited here much, you probably already know that I'm a self-proclaimed TV addict. Not so much in the summer, when there's not much on that we like to watch. But when all of the new shows crank up in the fall, I revert right back into TV Junkie mode. I'm so glad that time has come! Survivor: China started last Thursday and I loved it. Dancing with the Stars started last night, but I had to tape it since we watched Monday Night football. Tonight, we have Bones, NCIS and The Unit. There' …

I am very late on the Alisher Usmanov case, but, here goes... Alisher Usmanov is an Uzbeki-Russian billionaire who allegedly made his fortune in mining and possibly other activities. He's quite good chums with the Islom Karimov, the president dictator in charge of Uzbekistan. And last month he started a bid to takeover Arsenal Football Club. His name was new to most, but not to Craig Murray, former British ambassador to Uzbekistan, who repeated several allegations he made in his book, Murder in …

2007-09-20 15:24 Zodiac
I found David Fincher's Zodiac to be compelling and absorbing. Though, interestingly, the reasons I liked the movie are not far from the reasons Kim hated it. Zodiac is so cool and detached as to be almost hysterical, as well as creepy, in its insistence upon objectivity (both in terms of its point of view, and in terms of its excessive care in making supposedly "authentic" re-creations of 1970s decors). How does the film work Despite what I might have expected from the director of Seven, Zodiac …

2007-09-10 19:53 Couch Potato
Ah, the pleasures of Autumn. Cool, windy days. Beautiful foliage. Comfort food. Getting the vast majority of children off the streets. And, of course, the onslaught of a billion new television shows, many of which will get a shot or two before I (or the network) puts them out of their misery. I have no idea what will make the cut. For every show I think will be great and winds up sucking ( Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip ), there will be one I pass on, only to hear that it's massively entertaining …

2007-09-07 22:23 I Will Read A Cereal Box...
If, horror of horrors, I run out of books! My husband says I'm an addict and I've been know to get re-dressed at 11pm to run to our 24 hour grocery store if I am out of reading material. The owner of our local trade a book smiles when she sees me come through the door because she knows her "fronter shelf" (with newer books) is about to be restocked. Before discovering blogging, I averaged 30 to 40 books a month, but now I'm down to 25 or so a month. Toby Boyce tagged me for this book meme and …

2007-09-05 17:51 Permanent President Putin
James T. Hackett The Washington Times September 4, 2007 Russia may be a democracy, but it is rapidly morphing back into an authoritarian state. President Vladimir Putin looks very much like a man running for re-election. The question is whether he plans to scrap the constitution and become president for life or rule from behind the scenes and return to office later. The constitution adopted in 1993 by the new Russia states in Chapter 4, Article 81, "No one person shall hold the office of preside …
