2007-09-02 00:36 Culture clash in Berkeley: Tennessee vs. Cal
It's not that often that a ranked SEC power rolls into Berkeley to play a ranked California team - but that's exactly what we've got in Berkeley this evening. I'm a lot less interested in the football game itself than I am in the idea of a bunch of football-loving Southerners showing up in Berkeley. A little while ago, I called my good friend and Berkeley neighbor Andrew (a Florida Gator) to discuss the juxtaposition of cultures. Andrew had just returned from a walk around downtown Berkeley, whe …

2007-08-27 21:49 Longshore, Bears never knew what hit them
Even though California rebounded from its blowout loss to Tennessee last season and finished 10-3, the Bears never forgot the spanking they received that night in Neyland Stadium. For quarterback Nate Longshore, it was especially disappointing, and he and his teammates have counted down the days to get another shot at the Vol

2007-08-27 07:27 Charlotte Observer: Cal awaits Vols, redemption
Tennessee ruined Cal's title hopes last season; now, game in Berkeley JOE DAVIDSON A year ago, Cal ventured to Knoxville, Tenn., to kick-start a football season of promise. The Bears collectively gulped when they had to inhale the heat and humidity, and to comprehend just how rabid 102,038 orange-clad fanatics packed into Neyland Stadium can be. By the time it was 35-0 in a game that finished 35-18 for the Volunteers, Cal's national championship picture had been hopelessly smeared. Bears coach J …

2007-08-27 07:24 Memphis Commercial Appeal: Cal stews over thumping by UT
Golden Bears better prepared for Vols By Ron Higgins The orange-clad players were big. "We didn't expect the size of their athletes, which were big, strong and fast," Cal linebacker Zack Follett said. "In the South, they are bred that big." The stadium that seats 102,000-plus seemed to touch the clouds. The sheer size of the place is what got most of us," Cal quarterback Nate Longshore said. "We'd never seen a stadium that big." The final result, a 35-18 victory for No. 23 Tennessee over No. 9 C …

2007-08-27 05:38 Contra Costa Times: Cal has score to settle Saturday
Nearly an entire month had passed since Cal's season-opening, 35-18 debacle against Tennessee last year. The Bears had just finished routing Oregon State 41-13 on a crisp, late September day in Corvallis. They had won their fourth straight game by a combined score of 174-67. As Cal players and coaches arrived at the steps leading down to their locker room, one man in a group of apparent fans kept clapping. But it quickly became clear that this was no Cal fan and no OSU fan showing respect. "Gr …

2007-08-24 18:00 The Tennessean: Cal eyes payback for loss at UT
It's been almost one year since the Cal football team was thumped by Tennessee. And the Bears still haven't found a mouthwash strong enough to get rid of the bitter taste. The two teams once again will open their regular seasons against each other in nine days, almost a year to the day of Tennessee's 35-18 beatdown at Neyland Stadium. It was one of those classic situations when the final score failed to tell the whole story. Cal, ranked No. 9 at the time, scored only three points in the first th …

2007-08-23 22:01 BlogPoll roundtable #1: "I don't fancy yours much."
The BlogPoll has begun and so has the semi-regular pollsters' roundtable, which this week asks a bunch of sports bloggers who have just gotten done assembling their fumbling, wild-ass-guess-heavy, and generally erratic preseason rankings two very simple questions: Who is overrated This was a tough question to answer, because I'd look at a team in the BlogPoll, think "Hmm, that ranking seems a little steep," and then go back to my own ballot and find that they were only a couple spots higher than …

15. University of Tennessee Volunteers How in the world did I get stuck covering both Arkansas and UT During my time at HU, I think I roomed exclusively with Arkansas and UT fans, so forgive me if I seem a bit slanted in covering these teams. Anyways, UT looks to have a good team with some key offensive players returning, but a murderous schedule. Let s take a look. Strengths: Their freshman class. 2007-08-22 17:08 A Bulldog Tempts the Wrath of a Vengeful God, Part VI: Tennessee.
Sorry for the radio silence over the last few days, guys. I was down visiting the folks in Columbus, Georgia, helping Pops buy a new car and spending some time with one of my cousins from Seattle who I haven't seen in probably seven or eight years. And as anyone who's ever been there knows, making Columbus entertaining for a 13-year-old might as well be a full-time job. But I'm back and ready to go, and that means it's time to do some hatin' on. .. "I'll take a dozen plain glazed. .. those two c …

2007-08-22 12:29 Memo to Stewart Mandel: This Is How You Make a Point!
The next time Stewart "Stop Me Before I Write Again!" Mandel decides he wants to express an opinion about anything related to college football, he needs to pay a visit to Addicted to Quack, where Dave has given a clinic on how to state a sensible position in a way that will make others respect your point of view. As the name of his site attests, Dave is an Oregon Ducks fan and his posting this afternoon---from which I will quote liberally, but which you should read in its entirety, nevertheless- …

2007-08-01 18:09 Loathed Enemy Coaches: Bottom to Top Part 2
We continue with our incredibly dumb idea of ranking Tennessee's 12 opponents' head coaches in order of least hatred to OMFGIWANT2KILLYOUNOW hatred. Like I said before, any reason I can think will be included in my rationale for this list. I ended last week with Louisiana's head coach Rickey Bustle at #7. I made myself snort while doing it, but I doubt anyone else did. Onward, to the top half. 6. Houston Nutt - Arkansas I think I would actually rank Nutt higher if not for the circus that's come …

2007-07-25 13:21 I just love their optimism
You have to admire the optimism of some sports fans–Cubs fans, for example. Or locally, the fans of Vanderbilt football. I love how every year about this time, they're so optimistic. "This is the year," you'll hear them say. "We're going to have a big year. We're going to a bowl game." I just smile nicely and wonder what's in the Kool-Aid they've been drinking. I would love to see Vandy do well becuase it goes to show the greatness that is SEC football (best conference in the nation, hands …

2007-07-24 15:16 Smoky but no smoking: UT bans butts in Neyland Stadium
The University of Tennessee announced this morning that smoking is now banned in Neyland Stadium, the football Holy of Holies on the Knoxville campus. No word yet on whether the Vol mascot, Smoky, will have to change his name. Entire departments of anthropologists could have careers interpreting the policies surrounding this sacred space over the years, so let's have a little exegesis of the news release dropping this smoke bomb on the Vol faithful. First is a sentence from the release, then an …

2007-07-09 23:34 Dumbest Blog Ever
So, The California Golden Blogs decided to rip on OSU for supposedly canceling a home-and-home with the Bears in 2012/2013. Now, if ANYONE is for the mocking of Ohio State, it's yours truly. But if you're going to mock, at least make sense in doing so. Writing a blog about OSU being afraid (OK, try not to laugh here) of playing (keep trying) CAL (I know, I couldn't either) is downright silly. Take this excerpt: TwistNHook just covered a bit of the Ohio St. vs. Cal history which can be seen here. …

2007-07-09 19:30 Uh... AAFL: This league actually has potential
Last month, Mark Cuban and a bunch of pals announced their intention to start the United Football League (UFL) in 2008, as a way to "compete" with the NFL ("compete," in this case, meaning "to fail abjectly and miserably.") So when I saw another article about a startup football league, I assumed it was about the UFL. I was wrong. As Dennis Dodd writes on CBS SportsLine, there's another league in the works for next spring - the All-American Football League (AAFL). First, we need to get past one f …

Is this the cost of our new scheduling strategy Per the Twin Cities Pioneer Press :Notre Dame and Baylor University are negotiating a football game for 2012. The Gophers tried to land a game with Notre Dame, too, athletics director Joel Maturi said. "We worked real hard to see if that could happen, but I don't think it will," said Maturi, a 1967 Notre Dame graduate.
