Media websites often go to great lengths to make those eyeballs linger, but here's a novel one: forget all the accusations of how media is sacrificing serious news for celebrity scandal, ever heard of the celebrity rag who plan to seduce readers into spending more time on its website by introducing NEWS on it Last week, Danish celebrity magazine Se og Hör announced a deal with 'quality' freesheet Nyhedsavisen that would see the freesheet provide news to Se og Hör's website, seoghoer.dk (via jour …

2007-08-02 09:39  New freesheet merger confirms new strategy
For Danish freesheet 24timer, the key to winning the freesheet war is more local content and less door-to-door distribution. Or so it seems. 24timer has just masterminded yet another 'merger' with a local freesheet, this time Fyns Stiftstidende's Xtra, securing another local version of its national freesheet. 24timer Xtra will hit the streets 8 August with a circulation of 32,000. Xtra will supply the local coverage, 24timer the national, and the merged freesheet will be distributed at traffic h …

2007-07-11 10:29  And you thought the primeminister was old-school
About a month ago we launched the danish primeministers blog. I had no idea the danish press would think of it as such a big story as they did. It got frontpage media coverage for serveral days and danish newspaper Nyhedsavisen wrote about five articles about it. The process with the primeminister was pretty interesting in a lot of ways, I'll try to sum up my thoughts about that some other time. But one thing that really struck some danish bloggers was the fact that we had made a rather harsh bl …

2007-07-01 22:26  Two more casualties in Danish freebie war
After the closure of Metro Aften in Copenhagen (December 2006), JPArhus+ (March 2007) and Dato (April 2007), also the two editions of Centrum in the Northern town of Aalborg will be axed. Centrum Morgen and Centrum Aften (combined circulation around 90,000) were successors of the free daily 10 Minutter that was launched already in 2002. In August 2006, publisher Nordjyllands Avisselskab (paid paper Nordjyske Stiftstidende), converted the morning paper into Centrum Morgen and added a home deliver …

2007-06-26 08:26  The price of a free(sheet) future
The price tag for the Danish freesheet war is approaching 1bn DKK, according to Danish trade journal Journalisten. They have calculated that so far the Icelandic attempt to prove that the future is free has cost the newspaper companies involved 815m DKK, with the now closed Dato taking 196m DKK in losses, Icelandic Nyhedavisen 309m DKK and JP/Politiken's 24timer 310m DKK. But a row over Journalisten 's methods has erupted in the comment field of the said article. The article only mentions in the …

2007-04-27 06:56  Danish readership 2007
Most paid Danish newspaper again (see previous post ) saw their readership decline in the three first months of 2007 compared to last year, while free door-to-door newspapers increased their readership. Commuter dailies MetroXpress and Urban both had a stable readership of around 600,000 and are the two best-read papers in Denmark. Paid paper Jyllands-Posten had 525,000 readers and is the third paper (in 2006 readership was around 600,000). Free door-to-door paper 24timer for the first time had …
