Blogs about Occupational Therapy
2007-10-18 04:31 On Madam and the Universe
It's strange that I don't write that often about Madam, considering that she's so central in my life. Part of it is that I have not yet mastered the gift to converting our little inside jokes and outings into stories that would interest anyone except immediate family. Also, whenever I am inclined to complain about tantrums, etc, I like to take a little time to let those particular feelings blow over. So I end up not writing much at all. But, honestly, the main reason is that I am waiting for the …

2007-10-17 22:32 Day 8/10 of Adult Physical Dysfunction Level I Occupational Therapy Fieldwork!
Day 8/10 of Adult Physical Dysfunction Level I Occupational Therapy Fieldwork! I've been hearing some hilarious stuff lately! I had one patient (CVA) tell me she was brought to the hospital just because she was extremely constipated! I had another one tell me that me and my OT supervisor were "twins". I've also been hearing stuff broadcast over the nurse station speaker from the call button - things like "I need to go Number Two Extremely Urgently!" - or "I need help! I need EVERYTHING!" - okay …

2007-10-16 23:10 Days 6 and 7 of Adult Phys Dys Level I Fieldwork in Occupational Therapy
10/15- Monday Today went smoothly. I was tired after the weekend conference though! And my patient that I was following, was suddenly discharged this weekend because his family decided to take him home! So I wrote up a week-long treatment plan for nothing! Oh well! You have to roll with the punches! So I got a new patient of my own, who had a total hip revision! I need help thinking of occupation-based, minimal resources needed, ways to work on improving his standing balance, standing endurance, …

2007-10-16 02:08 TOTA Conference 2007
I attended the Tennessee Occupational Therapy Association (TOTA) Conference in Nashville this past weekend! It started at 8am with some basic election information and scholarship announcements! Haley (a fellow student on the Chattanooga campus) and I each won a mini scholarship! It was very exciting and very much appreciated! We then started educational sessions! You could either do the 9-5 Sensory Integration session, or do two shorter sessions - one on AgrAbility (farming) and one on spiritual …

2007-10-12 22:51 Day 5 of Phys Dys Level I OT Fieldwork + TOTA
I am writing this from Nashville! I left the hospital at noon to get here at a reasonable time for tomorrow's Tennessee Occupational Therapy Association conference - avoiding Friday rush hour traffic, and no night driving, since my night vision is NOT good! I am exhausted so I hope I can go to bed really early tonight! I am staying with some good friends of mine so that helps, money-wise! Yesterday, I said this rotation was sucking out my soul. I also got a really interesting comment on that fro …

2007-10-11 02:41 Day 3/10 of Adult Phys Dys Level I Fieldwork
Today was a tiring day! It started at 7am with the ADL rounds...helping people get up, brush their teeth, hair, bathe, etc. I saw more private parts this morning than I think I've seen in my entire life! It seemed like many of our patients were anxious/depressed/agitated today. It really hurts my heart to not be able to help with the cause of their agitation, because typically it is not something alleviated by occupational therapy! In fact, it is often something that can't be helped, period. Tod …

2007-10-11 01:01 Sensory Integration: Its Not Just For Children
Here is an excerpt of an article written by Renee Watling, PhD, OTR/L, Stefanie Bodison, MA, OTR/L, Diana A. Henry, MS, OTR/L, CWT, and Heather Miller-Kuhaneck, MS, OTR/L, BCP on the use of Sensory Integration not only in pediatrics but also in clients across the life span. This article makes a case that because humans are sensory beings and sensation is inherent in all occupations, the sensory integration framework is relevant to occupational therapy practice beyond pediatrics. Further, we prop …

2007-10-10 12:17 A Literal Pain in the Neck
You wouldn't really think that writing comes with occupational hazards, but guess what It does! I mean, I know that I'm not hauling concrete or mine-diving or anything like that, but it turns out that sitting in front of a computer all day has severely screwed up my body. For years, I've had terrible neck and shoulder pain and have tried to cope with massages and, more recently, acupuncture. (Unfortunately, my husband is quite possibly the worst masseuse in the world. It gives me no pleasure to …

Caption: Julie and Anna wearing the OT hoodies they got at AOTA conference in St. Louis! Some of you may wonder sometimes why I'm so rabid about exposing the wonders of occupational therapy to the masses. Part of it is because I really just think it's amazing and want everybody to know!! But another reason is that occupational therapy is a threatened profession! Occupational therapists could go extinct if we don't have people watching out for our interests! This is where AOTA (American Occupatio …

2007-10-09 00:05 My first day of my OT Level 1 Fieldwork in Adult Phys Dys
Today was my first day of my adult physical dysfunction Level 1 Fieldwork, which is two weeks long. I was sooo nervous this morning! Adult phys dys is way outside my comfort zone. I can handle a baby with a ton of tubes, but an adult who needs their shoulder moved AUGH! Scary! I felt a little unprepared because even though I had made like 6 pages of cheatsheets (cough), I had forgotten to focus on the most important thing, which is neuro! I am doing this rotation with one other girl in my class, …

Someone forwarded me this link because, I dunno, having posted once about Your Webcomic Is Bad makes me an authority on it or something, I don't know. 2007-10-07 14:16 New Links!
I d like to welcome a few new blogs, some of which are new and some of which are new to me. The first is Poppy Q, a british shorthair cat, who has her own blog and she s not even one year old. Talk about an overachiever! She is one cool kitty and you have to check her out. Not only is she beautiful, but she has a pretty good purrsonality for a blogger. Luckily, her mum did not declaw her so she can type. You can link to her home page here or just skip to some of her adventures. Here are some sam …

2007-10-04 06:04 Occupational voyeurism and LOVE
I like reading about the lives of others. I would gladly read the autobiographies of truck drivers, pilots, waitresses, you name it. It all fascinates me. I used to think it would be SO MUCH FUN to just randomly get to spend a week with strangers, and see how they lived. Little things, like what kind of foods the family eats or how they spend their evenings, is really intriguing. Lately, seeing as how I am in occupational therapy school and focusing on health care, I enjoy reading the blogs of m …

2007-10-04 00:45 Laundry list of occupational therapy student tasks
This post is basically a laundry list of my day as an OT student as well as tomorrow's list of things to do. It helps me keep track of what I'm doing! But if I'm going to write it down anyway, I might as well share, right My goal for the next few days (after tonight) will be to write proper professional posts about recent activities! And I have a deep & burning question about HIPAA to ask y'all soon. Soo...I'm having a good day! OT Practice has tentatively accepted my submission of the balance o …

2007-10-03 03:03 I'm famous, for real this time...
Y'all are gonna have to stand in line for my autograph. I've been beating people off with sticks, the paparazzi has been so heavy. It's almost like I'm Britney Spears going to a Starbucks. This evening I went to the Tennessee Occupational Therapy Association West District meeting at a local restaurant, Cozymel's. I sat near an occupational therapist in private practice, named Jennifer. We were talking for a while and then something I said (completely randomly) made her ask me if I had a blog. I …

Occupational Therapy! I've been working (too much) on an article I am trying to submit to OT Practice. You don't even want to know how many hours I've spent on the included drawing. Thank goodness for generous friends who help critique what I've done and correct my grammatical mistakes, and thank goodness for Virginia teaching me how to turn text at an angle! I love you Virginia! Anyway, I've neglected this blog this weekend, and it's primarily due to a twenty five hour occupational therapy cour …

2007-09-29 05:29 Occupational therapy blogging neglect
Sorry for the blogging neglect. I hate the neglect because it's hard to attract new readers when all I do is say "More later, too busy!" This thermal modalities course is pretty exhausting and I haven't had much time. Tomorrow we will HOPEFULLY get done early, and I am going to try and catch up on a few things as well as start a few projects that are coming due rapidly!! Occupational therapy school, as always, is a wonderful thing that I recommend to everyone, but right now we are in a MARATHON …

2007-09-26 16:57 P2P Autism in Northern Ireland
The Donna Williams Belfast lecture was sponsored by a new Northern Ireland autism group; 'P2P Autism Support Group'. Their logo consists of 3 puzzle pieces, encircled by the words, 'Parent 2 parent working together to support educate advocate'. Their leaflet was handed out to everyone who registered for the lecture. It's second paragraph started with, 'Estimated rates of autism in the UK now stand at 1 in 58.' Uh oh. That sounded familiar. After the lecture, I asked some people who were part of …

2007-09-16 00:30 The new MMOG: Massively multiplying online goodness
OK, I recently got added to Priscilla Palmer's expansive "Personal Development List," thanks to Ariane Benefit, who is also on the list. The list is kinda like a chain letter or something, where once you get added, you're supposed to re-post the list, add 5 more sites to the list, and do a trackback back to the original list. I'm going to do it a little differently, just because the list is so long and I think Priscilla is doing a great job of maintaining the list. So here are my 5 additions to …

2007-09-03 06:52 A Writer's Inner Battle
There is a psychological nuisance so powerful that can deflate the drive, self-esteem, and human spirit of many aspiring Writers of any age. These Writers are faced with an obstacle that make them stop, think twice and question their right to be a part of a respected community. This even leads them to doubt their ambition of pursuing their literary or journalistic calling. It is that inner voice echoing: Huh! Who do you think you are, a J. K. Rowling in the making or Oh my God, stop pretendi …

2007-09-02 01:43 Green Thumb Sunday 1
Warning warning! I do not actually have a green thumb! But i am attempting to be better, honest. My mum has to do a lot of Physical therapy and Occupational therapy and through this she has now started to get back into gardening. The Occupational therapy team has managed to get an allotment, which is increasingly hard to do these days(they are prized possessions). So it is now part of her therapy to go there once a week, growing veggies, planting seeds etc. The problem is that they only use the p …
