2007-11-06 10:42  Pakistan: CADTM condemns the state of emergency declared by Pervez Musharraf, for too long supported …
On Saturday 3 November 2007, Pakistan's president Pervez Musharraf declared a state of emergency and ordered widespread repressive measures against the numerous opponents of his regime. Several activists for democracy in CADTM's Pakistan branch were taken into custody in Lahore the same day. These decisions follow a highly contested presidential election (by indirect suffrage) won by Musharraf in totally anti-democratic circumstances. In CADTM's view, Musharraf intends to use force to hold on to …

2007-11-05 21:32  Duff diplomacy
By Simon Tisdall (THE GUARDIAN, 05/11/07): Condoleezza Rice keeps pretty chirpy, but it was a gloomy weekend for US power and interests in the Middle East. Every way she looked during a flying visit to the region, hopes of progress turned to dust in her hands. From Pakistan to the occupied Palestinian territories, there is a sense of imminent unravelling born of misjudgment and long-term neglect. President-General Pervez Musharraf's "second coup" was a personal rebuff for the US secretary of sta …

2007-11-05 21:11  A proud, but failing, state
By Peter Preston (THE GUARDIAN, 05/11/07): When, last year, America's heavyweight Foreign Policy magazine moved Pakistan into its top 10 of failed states - at No 9, just ahead of Afghanistan - assorted Islamabad ministers clambered on to the highest of horses. The charge was insulting, ludicrous ... But, baby, try it again now. Here is a huge Islamic nation, nuclear bombs primed not promised, plunged once more under full monty martial law. 2007-11-05 13:28  A Battle Rages in London Over a Mega-Mosque Plan
Disputes over mosques have broken out across Europe. Residents from Belgium to France to Germany have expressed unease at minarets competing in the urban landscape with the spires and stones of centuries-old cathedrals. But the fight raging over an abandoned lot in London's East End is of an altogether grander scale. A large and secretive Islamic sect proposed building what would have been the largest mosque in Europe, smack at the gateway to the 2012 Olympic Games, and within sight of London's …

2007-10-25 20:18  ˜Taleban with nukes No, but time is running out
By Bronwen Maddox (THE TIMES, 25/10/07): This has been a shatteringly bleak week for Pakistan, but not one that condemns it to being a failed state. The return of Benazir Bhutto, overshadowed by the bomb that killed 140, is a step forward. But although she has been championed in Europe and the US, she is a long way from being the solution to her country s savage problems. Pakistan dominates Britain s foreign worries, officials say, and they are right. It is not just that terrorism is on the incr …

2007-10-19 22:14  A history of trouble in the NW Frontier
By Graham Stewart (THE TIMES, 20/10/07): Events in Pakistan have taken yet another dreadful turn for the worse with the suicide bomb attacks on Benazir Bhutto s homecoming rally. Ms Bhutto has been quick to accuse supporters of the late military ruler Mohammad Zia ul-Haq of complicity. Others suspect al-Qaeda. For any Pakistani politician the equation seems unappealingly simple. Attacking the terror fastnesses in Waziristan and the other border regions along the old North West Frontier courts pe …

2007-10-19 21:57  Jason Burke: Når terroren kommer hjem
Når folk i den muslimske verden får oppleve hva terror virkelig betyr, synker oppslutningen om de ekstreme: But the most significant effect of the carnage in Karachi may be on support for the militants. Here, as events in the 90s in Algeria showed, the exact responsibility for any given atrocity is not necessarily important. When I lived in Pakistan, in the late 90s, few supported such acts, at home or abroad. In the aftermath of 2001, the war on terror and the invasion of Iraq, support soared. …

2007-10-19 21:37  Pakistan holds its breath
By Simon Tisdall (THE GUARDIAN, 19/10/07): Generally speaking, there is no upside to a suicide bombing, especially one as pitiless, as treacherous, and as costly of human life as that which hit home in Karachi yesterday. The slaughter came at the very moment when hope of a better, more prosperous and more democratic future had at last returned to the hearts of millions of impoverished, disillusioned and effectively disenfranchised Pakistanis. But if, as now seems likely, the mass murder pushes P …
